A Clash of Kings: Stannis Baratheon v Renly Baratheon

Thursday night at Justplay saw my Renly led Tyrell/Baratheons take on Sophie and her Stannis R'hllor worshippers. Sophie was trying out a Stannis panic list and I felt facing his little brother would make for a fun and fluffy match up, especially with playing the Clash of  (wannabe) Kings scenario

The Forces of King Renly

Rose Knights with Renly Baratheon - The Charismatic Heir (C)
Riders of Highgarden
Champions of The Stag
Baratheon Wardens
Baratheon Wardens

NCU's
Olenna Tyrell & Margaery Tyrell
__________________________________

The Forces of King Stannis

Golden Company Swordsmen with Stannis Baratheon
The One True King (C)
R'hllor Lightbringers with Red Priestess
R'hllor Queen's Men with Bryen Farring - King's Squire
Baratheon Wardens

NCU's
Axell Florent, Roose Bolton & Melisandre

Sophie's force had some expensive units and 3 NCU's which meant I had more unit's, having opted for two wardens and 2 NCU's.

TERRAIN: Weirwood, corpse pile, corpse pile and Palisade

Sophie won the roll off and selected the side without the corpse piles she'd placed

Stannis's Deployment (L to R): Queens Men, GC Swordsmen, Lightbringers, Wardens

Renly's Deployment: Wardens, Champions of the Stag, Rose Knights, Highgarden Cavaliers, Wardens

TURN 1

I opted to take the first turn, taking the letters, weakening the Lightbringers and using Olenna to negate Melisandre. Sophie then took the bags to remove the weakened while I followed up with Margery (looks like Shyra Errol as put wrong model in my pack, sorry) on crowns

And the glorious irony as Sophie's Wardens dropped 3 men to panic...

We then moved up, with my Wardens heading to the two flanks and my cavalry giving the Lightbringers a choice of targets (as Sophie still had an open Sword and NCU). I was going to go for the flaming arrow guys with the cavalry if I got the chance...

Axell took the swords...

Scoring 5 hits, which all passed before the vulnerable was expended!!! Damn, one sneaked through...

And I had a panic check too

3 wounds caused from failing it!!! And Renly's lads lost two to the follow on...

BOARD AT END OF TURN 1

TURN 2

Sophie went first, ignoring the swords to charge Stannis into my Champions of the Stag and doing another four wounds, with timely use of the precision card, leaving me with 4 left...

This allowed Olenna to take the swords and cancel Melisandre again

But I swapped the attack for Wealth and Charisma. I had also passed the panic check when Stannis attacked, so got an extra attack dice from another Renly card

I got a charge into the Lightbringers but had crossed the corpse pile so no re-rolls.

Scoring 4 hits, killing 3...

Not particularly great...

And Sophie hit me with Baratheon Justice to make things worse

Using the horses, the Lightbringers retreated away

On the left, my Wardens bravely took the objective and were promptly pounced upon by the young Seaworth and the Queens Men.

Sophie scored all seven hits, so no counter-strike!!! Still, my armour was up to the task and I passed all my saves...

I activated the Champions of the Stags, shifted over and swung their hammers with Ours is the Fury so they hit on 2+ with sundering

Alas, they healed up from bags, while my Cavaliers were shot down to a rank and then my Rose Knights failed a 3+ charge!!! Sophie Wardens swung back to the centre while I took the right objective with mine. I had also played Oath of Duty on my Champions of Stag as figured the Cavaliers were going down!!!

END OF TURN 2

RENLY 2 VP's (2 objectives)

STANNIS 0 Vp's

TURN 3

Well, its fair to say I had options...

I charged the Cavaliers into the flank of Stannis dropped the down a few men. Sophie took the swords with Mel and panicked them to a wound before shooting them for sheer overkill! Stannis failed his panic though. I swung the Stags hammers again, dropping Stannis to two men but he passed his panic and healed. And then Sophie took the bag bringing them up to six wounds!!!

But that didnt helped as Renly swung into action, with seven hits from eight attacks, using the sundering cards and due to the failed charge, had been in the flank. Stannis was dead, killed by his brother and scoring me 3 VP's as well as taking the centre objective...

On the left, the Queens Men lost out in the melee thanks to me rolling better attacks, and better saves!!!

END OF TURN 3

RENLY BARATHEON 8 VP's (1 unit = 3 VP's, 5 objectives)

THE LATE STANNIS 1 VP (1 unit)

Sophie had moved up the Wardens, the Lightbringers had ineffectually shot my Stag knights but the death of Stannis had swung the game to Renly's faction.

TURN 4

As usual, excitement and tunnel vision got the better of me and I didn't concentrate. I activated the Champions of the Stag, moved up and successfully charged the Light Bringers. Except I couldn't fit !!! They were then shot off the Mel bomb on the swords and dropped to 3 wounds!!! Well, looked like I would pay for my stupidity!!!

On the left, my Wardens were still hitting with 5 of their 6 attacks and battering the Queens Men...

I charged the Rose knights and they battled to a draw with the Wardens while my armour on the Champiosn of the Stag allowed them to hang on with a mere single wound left at the end of the round

END OF TURN 4 (& Game)

RENLY BARATHEON 11 VP's (1 unit = 3 VP's, 8 objectives)

STANNIS BARATHEON 1 VP (1 unit)

Well, have to say it went better than I expected. I was fortunate to start with, then draw Wealth and Charisma as that kept my Champions in the fight with Stannis. Sophie went for all three objectives, and her Wardens really were out of the fight and not supporting Stannis allowing Renly to gang up at crucial juncture. Stopping Mel first two turns also helped as I wasn't passing many morale checks early on. The left side Wardens were my best unit, holding the Queens Men's charge without loss, then beating them down. that melee was all about one sided dice, as i hit with all bar one attack each round, and didn't fail an armour save. Sophie is gonna get Stannis some cavalry...

3 Game Conquest Event at Blackburn (UK)

Aaron Edwards organised and ran a 10 player, 3 game, 750pt event at Geek Retreat in Blackburn, Lancashire, UK last Sunday. Andy Carr and I went up for the event, its 15 mins from Andy's and a n hour from mine.

A good mix of forces saw 2 Nords, 2 Spire, 2 100 Kingdom, 2 Dweghom, 1 W'adhrun and Aaron's own Old Dominion participate...

Having had the week off before hand, I managed to finish painting all 750pts for this, and manage da single practice game against Andy's Spire, which I eaked out a very narrow win.

745pts Nords

Blooded Warlord with Bear Aspect & Mastery: Curse of Vargr (Brute, place in Brute unit)

4 Ugr, 3 Ugr, 3 Fenr  and 1 Mountains Jotnar (I have two additional Ugr painted)

I chopped and added a few bits onto the Ugr's

My Blooded, Y'ondu, Leader of the U'Donta UGR Clan

Big Bob and his pet Direwolf

Blackburn's Geek Retreat is quite spacious and has lots of, well, Geek stuff...

GAME 1

ANDREW SINGLETON

SCENARIO: BREAKTHROUGH

Andy's 100 Kingdom consisted of Mounted Noble Lord with 3 Knights, 3 stands of Mercenary Crossbows, 3 stands of Steel Legion and Imperial officer leading 3 stands of Men-at-Arms

TURNS 1-3

Andrew got his Crossbowmen on first and brought them on centrally. His men at arms popped upon my right, and Knights on the left with Steel legion behind his crossbows. We had two woods, a building and some rubble.

At end of Turn 3 my Fenr were up and ready to charge turn 4

My Ugr's on left allowed me to score as did Andrews Knights so end of Turn 3 was 2-2. Should point out Andy tried a 5+ charge at the Fenr but failed to enter the woods...

TURN 4

I got the first activation and charged the Fenr into the Men at Arms to hold them up. I managed eight hits on the charge through the woods...

Andrew managed six saves though...

Still, I felt I'd boxed his troops in a bit

The crossbowmen took aim at my Warlord led Ugr's but only scored a wound...

I moved my Giant up behind the Fenr, who were wiped out by the Men at Armsas Andrews dice were awesome!!! I then moved up my Blooded's Ugr and was charged after movement, losing only a single model to the impact hits...

END OF TURN 4

The Knights would have to face off against both my Ugr units but the Giant would be facing 3 units on his own...

TURN 5

AND I GOT THE FIRST ACTIVATION, STRIKING AT THE KNIGHTS WITH MY UGR...

But Andrews lost a single knights with some great saves rolls...

They attacked back, dropping a few Ugr's. I charged the Giant in and wiped crossbows down to one man, who was then flanked by the Men at Arms. The Steel Legion couldn't get in to the big guy but as it was a beginner frienldy event, i suggested he withdraw his solo crossbowman from melee and take D6 wounds... My giant took a total of 12 wounds, 6 from the Men at Arms all in, and 6 from melee with Steel legion. So 6 resolve to roll...

And I passed five of them, to leave him hanging on with 1 wound left!!!

My other Ugr's finished off the Knights...

END OF TURN 5

100 Kingdoms 3 VP's

Nords 3 VP's

TURN 6

Andrew got the first activation and the Steel legion killed Big Bob...

My Warlords Ugr's charged the Imperial officer and men at Arms through the woods but failed to kill them. I then moved up and charged the Steel legion in a risky but necessary move. I wasnt going to fall back or push on for an objective, as Ugr's gotta eat!!!

TURN 7 and 8

The Inspired Steel Legion caused eleven wounds on my Ugr's, killing two outright and nicking the third

Amazingly though, I passed eight resolve and so took another 3 wounds leaving one badly beat up Ugr surviving (I should have taken two wounds but in the heat of battle forgot about Oblivious)

I didnt inspire with my Blooded and his Ugr and wiped out the Men at Arms, moving forward into the flank of the two remaining Steel Legion stands. And in Turn 8 I won first activation, charging in and wiping the Steel legion and the 100 Kingdoms out...

END OF TURN 8 (and Game)

3-3 on points as we slugged it out, with my Nords achieving victory by wipe out...

Although I had only played once beforehand with the Nords, I've been running 100 Kingdoms since Conquest came out. Andrew hasn't played much, so we talked a lot about the game and the 100K, and he won his next two games, coming third overall...

GAME 2

AL

W'ADRHUN

SCENARIO: MAELSTROM

Al's W'adrhun consisted of a Predator with 3 stands of slingers. 3 raptor riders and  stands of blooded

TURN 1 and 2

The Raptors didn't come on in the first 2 turns. Al got his Slingers on and advanced right up the centre. I brought my Fenr on right side and Blooded Ugr's centrally, both on turn 2.

TURN 3

My Ugr's were broken by the slingers losing two of their number helped as they had to take resolve. I brought Ugr's on my right to secure the objective there and my Fenr charged into engage but not attack this turn with the slingers!!!

This allowed my Warlord to go in for Impact damage!!!

I got an impressive 5 hits which combined with resolve (and a few evades) managed to kill a stand

My giant came on centrally as the Raptor riders came on and javelined my Fenr, scoring only two wounds...

TURN  4

Al got the first activation and his slingers with Predator wiped out my Ugr and Warlord

In response, my Fenr attacked

And wiped them out!!!

I moved up my giant as the W'adrhun Blooded repositioned. The Raptors flanked and wiped out my Fenr

I had sneaked ahead by scoring off the centre on points, but we were also both erroneously scoring from the flank objectives (you need to hold both not one)

TURN  5

Big Bob got charged by the raptors with Al's first activation and again, managed to take 13 wounds...

Unlucky Bob may be his new nickname!!! Or perhaps call his pet Direwolf "Lucky"

I attacked back and brought down a Raptor

Before flanking tehm with my Ugr's, wiping them out...

TURN 6

I got first activation and removed Unlucky Bob from the centre over to the flank objective. Al brought his Blooded over and my Ugr charged them from the woods so no impact or inspire but still scored nine hits...

I felt I could get them buggers!!!

And managed to take out two stands!!!

From the wounds taken though, the Blooded had an Aberration so lethal demise ensued causing seven hits!!!

Again, though I took four wounds (above) I passed all my resolves!!!

TURN 7

AL got first activation and wiped out my Ugr's

And Unlucky Bob stayed out the fight as a six plus charge was not in his interests!!!

END OF TURN 8 (and Game)

NORDS 8 VP's

W'ADRHUN 6 VP's

Al and I spent ten minutes before playing just chatting about the game, miniatures, painting etc. It was a really quick, bloody and intense game, swinging in the middle with one unit avenging the other in rapid succession. Shame we didn't paly the scenario correctly but as we both played it wrong it kinda balanced out and didn't realise until after the game was over

GAME 3

ANNA ROBINSON

DWEGHOM

SCENARIO: HEAD TO HEAD

Hold Raegh Warlord in 5 stands of Hold Thanes, 4 stands of Hold Warriors and 3 stands of Fireforged. A lot of cans to get my cleave 2 into!!! With no Light units on either side, we went straight to Turn 2

TURN 1-3

Anna brought on her Fireforged first, on my left. With more activations, I thought I would try a right hook with my forces, as the Thanes took the centre. and my Fenr led the way up the right with the Ugr's and Unlucky Bob following up.

The Thanes with the Hold Raegh were looking like a tough nut to crack

TURN 4

The Hold Warriors were slow to come on, so I was going to shove my units straight down at where they were going to appear

My Fenr were sent in to block the Thanes, but I needed the first activation to smash in the Hold Warriors

TURN 5

Anna got the dice roll and sent the Hold Warriors in to my Blooded's Ugr's. However, I rolled a few saves and only lost a single Ugr...

The Thanes easily dispatched the Fenr, but I moved the Giant away from them and then charged the FireForged who had moved up, although I had no attacks I had 6 impact hits. Anna's dice failed her as she took five wounds from Unlucky Bob

My second unit of 3 Ugr's charged into the woods and managed a respectable 4 wounds on the defence 5 hardened Thanes!!! My Warlord and his Ugr's left the Hold Warriors  broken with a mere three wounds left...

Nords 0 VP's

Dweghom 1 VP

TURN 6

Anna again won the initiative but surprised me with activating the Fireforged (as she felt they were going to get smacked). They did four wounds on the Giant, but this gave my Ugr a reprieve so they hacked into the Thanes killing two stands and leaving one with two wounds left.

The Thanes swung back but my resolve was good and I hung on with two models. My Warlord's Ugr's didn't inspire so after killing the Hold Warriors moved in to a flanking position. The Fireforged were left hanging on by a single badly mauled stand

NORDS 1 VP

DWEGHOM 1 VP

TURN 6

Anna won the dice roll again, activating the Thanes and wiping out my small Ugr unit. They dd not inspire, so turned to face my Ugr and Lord. I duly charged in, doing 5 wounds as Anna's dice failed despite high armour and resolve.

This was getting close as the Hold Raegh and my Blooded started duelling...

The Fireforged (who auto rally due tothe Raegh Supremacy) attacked the giant, inspiring as they did. And I took a snap to show just how badly her dice were landing...

The Hold Raegh threw the first punch and I took three wounds to the Raegh's two.

The Giant finished off the Fireforged without inspiring and then moved up to flank position...

NORDS 2 VP's

DWEGHOM 2 VP's

TURN 7

I got the first turn and in went Unlucky Bob...

This cut the Thanes down to three wounds left. They dropped my Ugrs down to two and I also lost Y'ondu to the Raegh in the challenge...

Still, my Ugr's were inspired by his death and also remembered they get extra attacks (finally) when they suffered wounds.

But the Iron resolve and steel armour meant that despite all those hits, the dwarves only took two wounds and hung on with one left...

NORDS 2 VP's

DWEGHOM 3 VP's

TURN 8

I finally got first activation and had the giant smash the Thane and Raegh into a bloody pulp...

Another cracking game and really close. Chatting after, the game could have went either way and had the Thanes attacked the Ugr rather than the Fireforged v the Giant, it could have easily been a Dweghom win...

ANDREW CARR

SECOND PLACE

A draw with Anna game one and two wins meant Andy had secured a respectable runners up spot behind...

1st Place

Brian McGonigle

Everyone got a box at least so everyone was happy but as I had won all three games (barely I'm sure you'd agree) I ended up top of the pile.

Big thanks to Aaron for putting it on, and all the Blackburn (& Great Harwood) players. Will look forward to the next escalation event as the points go up. (And I have new units to add). The newer players all felt they had learned a lot, and we certainly had a good, fun and chilled time...

Aaron used the Longshanks Event summary to keep track of the event: (7884)  Discovering Conquest - 750 Points • Longshanks event 7884
