I PLEDGE MY SWORD: Three battle reports from Dice of Lead & Steel Wargaming event

Ste, Matt and I headed back to Battlefield Hobbies In Daventry for Dice of Lead & Steel's "I Pledge my Sword" event. I was running a pair of Triple Dragon lists, Matt Starks and Ste Bolton's.

For Game One & Two I selected my Marselen list, as below

Unsullied Swordmasters with Marselen - Mother's Men Commander (C)

Drogon

Rhaegal

Viserion

Stormcrow Mercenaries with Jorah Mormont - The Andal

Stormcrow Mercenaries with Belwas - Veteran Pit-Fighter NCU's

Pyat Pree, Illyrio Mopatis & Daenerys Targaryen

GAME 1

Joe "Drabbs" Drabble

Neutrals

A GAME OF THRONES

I've chatted to Joe a few times at Battlefield events but never played him, but he had a decent, balanced Neutral list including Zorse riders, as below:

House Bolton Blackguards with Roose Bolton - The Leech Lord (C)
Stormcrow Mercenaries with Sandor Clegane - Fugitive Bodyguard
Stormcrow Mercenaries with Ramsay Snow &Reek

Stormcrow Archers with Bronn - The Sellsword
Bloody Mummer Zorse Riders
House Bolton Flayed Men
NCU's
Petyr Baelish, Shae & Lord Varys RANDOM TERRAIN: Bog, Corpse pile, Weirwood

NEUTRALS: Ramsey Stormcrows, with Flayed Men behind, Blackguard with Roose,
Zorse Riders behind, Archers, Hound's Stormcrows

TARGARYENS: Jorah's Stormcrows, Viserion, Marselen's Unsullied, Rhaegal,
Drogon, Belwas's Stormcrows

TURN 1

Joe won the roll and let me go first, so after playing Blood of the Dragon on the Unsullied, I activated taking swords with Illyrio.

Whispered Threats was played to make Rhaegal panicked and Vulnerable, I as swapped the Swords for Devotees of the Dragon for a unit of Freedmen

And a Varys token was also spent, causing two wounds on Rhaegal after the Vulnerable was spent.

Interesting first activation! Before Shae took the Letters, I played a second Blood of the Dragon on Belwas's Stromcrows

Daenerys took bags to heal Rhaegal, Joe moved a  unit before Pyat Pree removed a card by swapping out the Crown, as did Baelish on the House of Undying.

BOARD END OF TURN 1

Joe swung his Flayed Men to my left, while I concentrated the Dragons on the centre and right. The Stormcrows would objective sit as Dragons looked to go hunting.

TURN 2

Joe had Baelish take the Letters but spent a token to use Swords and have the Stormcrows shoot at the Unsullied with Sundering

This killed three, but I passed the panic and healed two thanks to Marselen's Dauntless and the Swordmaster's newly granted Combat Mastery: Resolve.

Joe played Meticulous Planning start of the Turn and Whispered Threats when I activated an NCU

I took the Swords and dropped a card with Pyat Pree

Shooting off the Bags due to Bronn, followed by shooting on their activation dropped my Unsullied down to three. But I passed a third panic check, healing another two (six healed this turn from 3 shooting attempts)

Start of Turn I took three wounds on the Freedmen to Supply Aid while Illyrio spent a token instead of using the horses

Et voila! The Swordmasters were as good as new.

With the Archers finished, Rhaegal swooped into Sandor's Stormcrows, killing eight in total. They retreated rather than attack, but couldn't retain the objective.

Joe went for a 4+ charge with Roose and the Blackguard but came up short. I took the opportunity to move up my Freed Men to block the Zorses from getting involved

I charged my rejuvenated Swordmasters into Roose and his Blackguard, passing my Horrific Visage and killing four

Joe had Ramsey protect the Blackguard from Viserion, while I sat with my right Stormcrows.

The Zorses then moved up a little bit, but I sat on the left objective.

With Drogon, Viserion and Daenerys still to active, Joe was reluctant to commit his Flayed Men so took the Crowns and killed the Freed Men with the resultant panic

This allowed Drogon a flank attack on the Blackguard, killing two.

The Flayed Men took the far left objective, so I had Daenerys take swap the House out for a Dracarys attack for Drogon.

This killed the Blackguard and Roose and Drogon took the centre objective.

With the Blackguard gone, the Zorse Riders were set upon by Viserion, causing seven wounds

END OF TURN 2

TARGARYENS 4 VP's (1 unit,3 objectives)

NEUTRALS 1 VP (1 objective)

Board End of Turn 2

Turn 3

Going first, I activated Rhaegal and flanked Sandor;s unit, wiping them out

and played Overrun, to flank Bronn's Stormcrow archers, killing eight.

Joe moved the Flayed Men backand then charged Viserion in the flank, slaying the dragon

I took the Swords and had Rhaegal attack, wiping out the Stormcrow Archers

With Rhaegal fully activated, the Zorse riders moved away and I took the Horses to feign a chase with Drogon and then the Zorses healed.

I say feign, as owning the horses allowed me to Swift reposition the Swordmasters for a flank charge into the flank of Ramsey's Stormcrows, who were Vulnerable and panicked from a War Cry...

With the demise of the Freed Men and Viserion, I'd gotten a token for Blood of the Dragon, so had nine attack, and two tokens so +1 to hit. Nine 2+ attacks . Shame I didn't get any sixes for the precision, but still...

With the Vulnerable, the Stormcrows took nine wounds and then failed their panic with a three on the D3, wiping them out.

Drogon then charged in to the flank of the Flayed Men doing four wounds.

Daenerys then did her Dracarys and Drogon dropped the Flayed Men to single model.

Board End of Turn 3

END OF TURN 3

TARGARYENS 11 VP's (4 units, 7 objectives)

NEUTRALS 2 VP's (1 unit, 1 objective)

TURN 4

Joe activated the Zorse Riders, moving in behind Rhaegal before charging in and killing the dragon.

Illyrio took the Swords, and Drogon finished off the Flayed Men

Before Surging forth back towards the Zorse Riders

Belwas and his Stormcrows charged the Zorse riders flank...

And with 8 attacks totally fluffed it thanks to the weakened token!!!

However, Drogon activated and charged home, dropping seven wounds of of the horses on the cgare, before Daenerys and her Dracarys attack wiped the Neutrals out

END OF TURN 4 (& GAME)

TARGARYENS 15 VP's (6 units, 9 objectives)

NEUTRALS 3 VP's (Viserion & Rhaegal, 1 objective)

A tough match up for Joe in fairness, but he played his army really well and decimated Marselen's unit in Turn 2 with shooting activations 9they stayed alive thanks to the new "resolve" buff they didn't need (but I like free stuff, so why not). The game turned on the freed Men dying to a panic check AFTER the Zorses had activated, so Drogon was free to flank and attack the Blackguards twice wiping them out. Rhaegal took out the right flank, and Joe did well getting the Zorses back to sort Rhaegal out. A good start and a good game tactically from me.

Meanwhile, our Ste's Bolton's had a difficult match up first game, securing a  narrow win over Steve Butler's exquisitely painted Greyjoy's

GAME 2

Nicholas "Nic9786" Keyes

BARATHEONS

"A DANCE WITH DRAGONS"

Another new opponent in Nick, with a pretty tough looking Baratheon list comprising of the following:

King's Men with Stannis Baratheon - The Rightful Heir
King's Men with Stag Knight Noble
R'hllor Queen's Men wth Andrew Estermont
R'hllor Queen's Men with Stag Knight Noble
Baratheon Sentinels with Stag Knight Noble NCU's
Alester Florent, Selyse and Shireen & Davos Seaworth
RANDOM TERRAIN: Wall, Hedge, Weirwood, Wall, Weirwood

BARATHEONS: Sentinels, Queens Men, Stannis Kingmen, Estermont Queens Men,
King Men

TARGARYENS: Jorah Stormcrows, Viserion, Unsullied, Drogon,
Rhaegal, Belwas Stormcrows

I'd set up to hammer one flank, and refuse the other

TURN 1

Nick swapped the Crown zone out for Will of the One True King

I took the Swords with Daenerys and produced a Unit of Freedmen

who sat nicely in next to Marselen...

We filled out the tactics board, Mick using all three cards before I could remove any...

END OF TURN 1

Nick had advanced up evenly across the board, I swung Drogon up last activation, with Rhaegal in support to flank the Kingsmen

TURN 2

The "Doom" begins.

I activated Drogon, he moves up and flanks the Kingsmen, killing six with the attack and a further three from their failed panic! Awesome.
Until Nick played Final Strike (and I'm vulnerable from the card played Turn 1)
But I saved enough to leave Drogon on two wounds.

Until Nick remembered why he had Stag Knight Nobles in the unit. Doh!!! Go Down Fighting causes a wound on an engaged enemy for each rank is lost. Drogon died without having even been attacked. (Dismaying though it was, its pretty good card and attachment play)

Nick took the crowns so I took the bags to deny healing while Selyse took Swords to deny it to me and influence the wounded Kingsmen.

So in flew Rhaegal, wiping out the Kingsmen easily enough. But they did their thing and passed a morale, causing me a wound, failed the panic, did their thing, caused another wound. So they activated and did some more wounds, before I used Daenerys for a Dracarys, killing them again, so Selyse and  Shireen did their thing

and also passed their panic check and killed Rhaegal with it

Wow. That hurt so much!!! Pretty amazing combinations but I'd lost two/thirds of my air wing... And I still had the whole tinny Baratheon army to deal with!

And he was just annoying me!!! It was a 5+ charge I think...

Always have faith in my dice.
(I mean technically my dice were good with my Dragons, as I'd rolled 3's on all the D3 dice)

Alas, my ex-slaves were not as good as dragons and got a slap, wasting a card and also facing Baratheon Justice!!!

I did secure the objective on the left by taking the Horses and sent Viserion into the Sentinels to deter any Baratheon aggression against Jorah. The Baratheons held their line, so I decided on a 6+ charge (due to my 2" move) against the Sentinels to try and wrestle back a bit of initiative..

Man, you gotta believe in the dice!!!
(Ok, for both charges i did have a re-roll with unstoppable advance card but didn't need it)

Sadly, Jorah and his Stormcrows hit almost as badly as the Freedmen and also engaged the Queens Men

On the right Belwas had also advanced over the objective to take it with his rear of tray, as had to push the Baratheons. Marselen and his improved Unsullied (9 diceand  2+ to hit) took the centre and Nick decided against a charge. Just need those Freedmen to die for a  3+ armour save...

END OF TURN 2

HOUSE TARGARYEN 3 VP's (3 objectives)

HOUSE BARATHEON 2 VP's (2 bloody Dragons!!!)

TURN 3

Nick took the Swords with Alester but then spent a token to take the Crown, and his depleted Kingsmen killed the Freedmen, surging back away from slow Belwas...

I think Nick would have backed them off the board, as I was on a mission of revenge on those DragonSlayers!!!

For his next magic card trick, Nick removed the weakened token from my Unsullied with Harsh Conditions and stopped me having all my gimmicks for the rest of the ROUND. (Dirty, sneaky b*astard Baratheons may have been uttered, which I stand by!!!)

I took the Swords vacated by Alester and attacked with Viserion . Sadly, he failed to kill the Sentinels and Nick was holding counterstrike and Viserion faired worse from the attack. The Sentinels attacked back, getting Viserion onto 6 wounds but I used Supply Aid to heal as I activated the Stormcrows, Viserion eating three Stormcrows for nourishment before the newly inspired Stormcrows lashed out at the lone Sentinel.

He died

The Stormcrows then got smashed by the Queens Men and lost the objective and five men, down to a single rank. I had no choice, I had to send in the Unsullied!!! No precision or re-rolls meant only six hits...

But I survived the attack back and held the objective, the Baratheons killing one more than I did...

Illyrio healed up  my Unsullied, after Belwas had retreated away from an angry looking Andrew Estermont, upset he hadn't got to kill any Dragons...

Nick's valiant (cowardly) Dragonslayers decided to go for the hat trick and headed towards Viserion, who had flanked the Queens Men, who lost a rank but failed the panic, returning the objective to my Stormcrows

END OF TURN 3

HOUSE TARGARYEN 7 VP's (1 unit, 6 objectives)

HOUSE  BARATHEONS 3 VP's (Drogon and Rhaegal)

BOARD
START OF TURN 4

With first activation, I spent longer than usual weighing up my options here, I wont deny it

I placed Daenerys on the Swords

And she summoned more ex-slaves to the field with Devotees of the Dragon card.
( Viserion would die if he didnt kill the Queen's Men, in a similar fashion to Rhaegal)

Ok, so the Queens Men activated and killed Viserion. My Unsullied activated and cut down some Kings Men after shouting their War Cry with re-rolls and Precision this time. Nick healed them up, but were still a single rank.

THE BALLAD OF MANKY MEG

Let me tell you the story of old Manky Meg,
a nasty withered crone with a wooden leg,
she went into battle with her newly freed kin,
a pitiful sight with her rolling pin.

Pathetically she limped up to the would-be King,
And laid him low with a gimpy swing,
she smashed and clubbed him 'til she had no breathe,
battering old Stannis to a shameful death!!!

Otherworld Miniatures "Old Crone"
from their NPC Roleplaying range

Look, I can tell the story anyway I like and that was damn well satisfying.
With gang up, in the flank, devastating impact and Stannis also tragically failing his "To the Last" morale checks. Yeah, great fun!!!

Angry Andrew Estermont proved to be nothing of the sort as the Stormcrows under Belwas held

With the demise of Stannis, the Dragonslaying Kingsmen about turned again and went back to their corner, the gits!!!

END OF TURN 3

HOUSE TARGARYEN 10 VP's (2 units including sad old Stannis,  8 objectives)

HOUSE  BARATHEONS 6 VP's (Drogon, Rhaegal, Viserion, 1 objective)

TURN 5

First activation saw Nick take the swords, shift in melee over, kill Jorah and his Mercenaries, claim the objective and surge forth. He had did the arithmetic and the super unsullied were too much to face...

On the other flank, Belwas and his Stormcrows would eventually suffer the same fate, although they dragged it out until turn 6 but lost the objective

Swift reposition helped but I still failed the charge

END OF TURN 5

HOUSE TARGARYEN 11 VP's (2 units, 9 objectives)

HOUSE  BARATHEONS 9 VP's (All my dragons and Jorah)

TURN 6

I charged in with the Unsullied, cutting down the ranks and forcing the Queens Men to objective. But I couldn't keep it, and Nick got to place it.

Nine dice hitting on 2+ is worth a picture. But ultimately futile

A simple retreat would see the Queens Men claim the objective.

And tie the game at the end of Turn 6

HOUSE TARGARYEN 12 VP's

HOUSE BARATHEON 12 VP's

BARATHEONS WIN WITH UNITS LEFT (😖)

A truly epic battle...

Amazing game. Nick played an absolute blinder, using the Baratheon cards and abilities defensively to perfection.  I lost two Dragons in Turn 2, and made two desperate charges same turn that didn't pay off. That being said, I did manage to keep my nose out front until the very end even though it felt weirdly like I was always behind all game. Sadly, when writing up reports like this you notice things like  the scoring errors (think it was the Freedmen) that we didn't notice in game and needless to say this doesn't detract from one of the best games I've played in a long time (and I enjoy every game). Nick deserved the win, and I feel I did well staying in the game after Turn 2. It was a tense, tactical but thoroughly enjoyable game, as we did take mick out of each other quite a bit, despite the tension in the game. For my part, Manky Meg was the highlight of the game for me, Stannis meeting an ignominious end at the hands of Freedmen...

Meanwhile Matt, newest Warden of the North West was winning his second game with his Starks against a highly mobile Robert's Nights Watch and finishing Round 2 in top spot.

As I had to use both lists at the event, I had to use Greyworm's list for Game 3
Unsullied Pikemen with Grey Worm - Unsullied Commander (C)
Drogon

Rhaegal
Viserion
Dothraki Hrakkars
Dothraki Outriders NCU's
Pyat Pree, Illyrio Mopatis & Daenerys Targaryen
GAME THREE

ALEX " I AM THE DRAGON!!!" GRANT

LANNISTERS

WINDS OF WINTER

Rather than smile, Alex had his fighting face on

Still, I captured his good side. Real Heroes were capes!!!

I'd played Alex once before at Leeds when they ran a 50 point event, and my Dragons had overcome his Targaryen " House of Dragon" themed list. We had a cracking game that day, (when I made that infamous, Turn 1, six up charge to kill Jorah with Viserion) so I was looking forward to this game , if not the match up as I was expecting dual Pyromancers!!!

As it turned out, both Alex's lists (and Nick's previous list) were designed to hurt my wee baby Dragons. Flattered they made so much effort really, but Alex opted for this high panic list over his Pyromancers...

Lannister Halberdiers with Addam Marbrand (C)
Lannister Guardsmen with Assault Veteran
Lannister Guardsmen with Assault Veteran
Knights of Casterly Rock
Knights of Casterly Rock
Gregor Clegane - The Mountain That Sucks NCU's
Joffrey Baratheon (Lannister), Cersei Lannister & The High Sparrow
TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT
RANDOM TERRAIN: Bog, Wood, Wood, Weirwood

LANNISTERS: Guards, Halberdiers, Guards, Knights, Knights, The Mountain

TARGARYENS: Outriders, Rhaegal, Viserion, Unsullied, Drogon. (Hrakkar in outflank)

TURN 1

We filled out the tactics board first, with Alex taking the first turn

As the Lannisters advanced in line, my Outriders loosed some arrows at the Halberdiers, killing three

Board End of Turn 1

The Lannister infantry held a solid line, the cavalry swinging around on my right, while I positioned my dragons to avoid being an easy target for the cavalry

TURN 2

Going first, Alex played score a point for every objective held. With our lines going to be clashing, I played score a point for each engaged enemy with fewer ranks (wounds for Dragons)

I brought on my Hrakkar on my left behind the infantry

Again, we played through the tactics board, Cersei getting two cards back as had the bags and crown. I didn't know that. The last zone on boards was reserved for Daenerys

Grant had flanked my Spearmen, but I held with Shieldwall and did a few wounds from Set for Charge. I also used Illyrio to heal I think. Rhaegal flanked and shrugged off Lannister supremacy, before Drogon flew in

Rhaegal killed the Knights but had charged in on a 1...

which denied me an Overrun into the Mountain.

Which cost me Rhaegal as the Mountain charged in, hitting on 2+ with Vicious as he had A lannister pays his debt with a token doing. I think it was 4 or 5 wounds, but then Hear me Roar and a failed panic check put paid to the Green Dragon

I shot the Halberdier up with the Outriders

Rolling six hits, alas with no precision

That dropped the unit down to a single rank!!!

Viserion flew into the other Knights, to tie them up while also doing maximum casualties, as the Guardsmen took the centre objective. I tried Issued Commands and didnt activate the Unsullied, with the intention of having Drogon eat the Mountain but it was Counterplotted

I activated the Hrakkars to chase the Halberdiers who had marched up away from me, but was hit with a Subjugation of Power and Hear Me Roar combination which dealt me 4 wounds. I'd also lost Vicious but hit the Halberdiers in the rear.

But I embarrassingly failed to kill them, and so the Alex used Adam's "Lash Out" card to kill the Lion

END OF TURN 2

HOUSE LANNISTER 4 VP's (2 units, 2 mission)

HOUSE TARGARYEN 3 VP's (1 unit, 2 mission

TURN 3

I played score 2 VP's for a unit in enemy deployment zone, Alex 2 VPs for controlling the centre

Activating first, I took the swords with Pyat Pree but decided against an attack with Viserion...

The Outriders instead shot into the flank of the Halberdiers scoring 5 wounds but that left Adam alive due to Hardened. Damn!!!

Alex activated The Mountain and he rear ended Viserion, slaying his second Dragon, with another Hear Me Roar and failed panic. Alex was well lauding it up with his planned tactics working and the Mountain being "Thee Man" blah blah blah...

After those pesky Kingsmen had ran away last game, Drogon was having none of it and flanked the Mountain. Sadly, I rolled a 1 on the D3, leaving the Man Beast on 2 wounds. Which is the numbe rof wounds he took from the failed panic check next to a Weirwood...

Who need Hear me Roar when yer big fella is yella???

Oh, and no counterplot to stop the Overrun and smash into your two remaining Knights, who died. The surge forth taking me into the enemy deployment zone...

So next up Alex was giving it large with his Guardsmen, trying to get my Unsullied to charge. They'd have 2+ save in the woods, I was influenced by Joffrey so would take extra wounds, had Bribery so reduced morale and lowest attacks. Ok, I'm up for it!!!

Passed the morale check for Subjugation of Power.

Charged in, cutting down 2 men and three more fled...

So Lannister Supremacy, with Intimidating Presence, Bribery etc...

Piece o' pish!!!

The Halberdiers were a different prospect, cutting my Outriders down to a wounded single rank, and healing up both themselves and the Guardsmen with Fealty to the Crown

The Guardsmen on my left moved up

Board at End of Turn 3

END OF TURN 3

HOUSE LANNISTER 7 VP's (3 units, 4 mission)

HOUSE TARGARYEN 7 VP's (3 units, 4 mission

TURN 4

Alex played score 2VP's if in enemy deployment zone, I played score if take sword or letters

Activating first, Alex took the bags and healed his Guardsmen. I had Pyat take the Horses and bring Drogon back up

Alex knew what was coming!!!

The High Sparrow on the Crown and influencing my Outriders wouldn't deter me...

The crown attack on the Outriders was passed

Alex took the Swords scoring me a VP but allowed the Halberdiers to butcher the Outriders surging forth towards my Unsullied. This deterred Drogon from a rear attack, so I flanked the Guardsmen, cutting them down to two.

The Halberdiers charged my flank, and a wicked combination cut me down to Greyworm. But I survived. And Issued Commands to allowed Drogon to kill the Guardsmen and overrun into the Halberdiers. His other Guardsmen marched into my deployment

END OF TURN 4

HOUSE LANNISTER 10 VP's (4 units, 6 mission)

HOUSE TARGARYEN 9 VP's (4 units, 5 mission

TURN 5

I played score 1 for each objective, Alex score one for taking a tactics board zone

Drogon killed the Halberdiers, landing back on the centre objective.

Alex used the crown to kill the Unsullied, giving us each a point.

I passed with all three of my NCU's, although Alex did go for another before realising his error and passing with the his remaining NCU's.

BOARD END OF TURN 5

HOUSE TARGARYEN 12 VP's (5 units, 7 Mission)

HOUSE LANNISTER 12 VP's (5 units, 7 Mission)

TURN 6

All units and NCU's passed

BOARD END OF TURN 6

END OF GAME

HOUSE TARGARYEN 12 VP's (5 units, 7 Mission) 7 pts on table

HOUSE LANNISTER 12 VP's (5 units, 7 Mission) 6 pts on table

And you thought the last game was close. And we were constantly sledging* one another the whole way through, in a light hearted manner. It was a real blast, with us trading one unit for another, cards and shenanigans all the way through it. This to me is what tournaments/events should be. More fun and less about the winning. Had I lost this game, I wouldn't have cared, I'd happily play Alex every day of the week. But then again, I didn't lose, Alex did. Again! Sadly, he will be heaping the abuse on with spades when he does get the win...

* In the sport of cricketsledging is the practice of deliberately insulting or verbally intimidating an opposing player. The purpose is to try to weaken the opponent's concentration, thereby causing them to underperform or be more prone to error

DICE OF LEAD & STEEL (DLS)  ran a thoroughly enjoyable event, and they are doing two more one day events at WARFARE NOVEMBER16th & 17th

Tickets available here

Three great games, wish I could play these guys every week. Will just have to settle for Squire Ste instead...

AWARDS

To the players on the left, the guy on the right is the other Grant fella, Aaron, the T.O. and general pain in my ass every time I lost a Dragon... 😍

Last Place - Brandon Keyes (obviously not as cheesy as his brother)

Moment of the Tournament (or as I prefer, The Git) - Nicholas Keyes

Awarded for one shotting a Dragon without actually rolling any dice.

THIRD PLACE - JOE DRABBLE

Great to see, Joe played really well against me and the end score didn't reflect that

SECOND PLACE (AGAIN) -  STEPHEN CONNOR

(Well done Squire!)

WINNER -  Konstantinos Bompotis

Three crushing victories, including the last game against Matt, saw "Bob" earn the well deserved to spot

I placed 5th, sneaking past Matt who came 6th
