This was Thomas's eighth event, and even by his standards, this was amazing. New scenarios, rules tweaks, plots, twists... and a new character/unit/ncu for each faction.
Shame Paul Winter couldn't make it up as he's been banging on about lack of a Lannister cavalry commander forever...

A late drop out meant uneven numbers but a pair of my fellow Wardens of the North-West were unexpectedly free so I dropped out of the gaming to allow them both to play. I have been to all seven of Thomas's previous events, so still came along to record the event and for the Garlic Sausage rolls...
Anyway, to business...
THE NARRATOR'S TALE

"The Flame and the Storm"
In the twilight years of King Robert Baratheon's reign,
the realm had grown fat, slow, and forgetful of the fires
that forged it.
Peace, they called it. But peace is a lie we tell ourselves
between wars.
Far across the Narrow Sea, in the red wastes and silver
sands of Essos, a girl with silver hair and dragons for
brothers remembered. Daenerys Targaryen, last true
born child of the Mad King Aerys did not forgive, and
she did not forget.
What Westeros dismissed as a child exiled and
powerless… became a queen made of blood, iron, and
fire.
The assassins came first….
Not blades in the night or poison in the cup—no. These
were masks in the council chamber, cloaked in loyalty,
trusted faces turned traitors. Jon Arryn, Hand of the
King, fell first—his death swift and suspicious. King
Robert Baratheon died within the month. A hunting
accident, they said. But the boar was never found. Only
the King's gored body… and a knife of Qarthian steel
buried in his back.
And so the dragon struck.
By the time the court could find its breath, Daenerys
had already crossed the sea with her army—Dothraki
screamers under Khal Drogo, the Unsullied spearmen of
Astapor, the sellswords of the Stormcrows and the
Second Sons behind them.
The ships that carried her forces to Westeros were
sailed under the famous banners of the Iron Islands, led
by the Kraken of the Greyjoys.
Balon, along with his brothers Euron and Victarion,
have always sought to avenge their failed rebellion.
With the King dead, the time is now.
The Martells of Dorne, nursing generations of wounds
from the deaths of Elia and her children, declared for
Daenerys. “Fire and Blood,” they cried, and their
banners flew high.
In the Riverlands, the Brotherhood Without Banners
abandoned their oaths to the realm. Under the red
shadow of R’hllor’s faith, they raised the common folk
into zealotry, calling Daenerys the chosen flame. The
old gods were dying, they said. The new god burns.
Soldiers from the North, Stormlands and the Vale join
their cause.
And in the far north, the Wall was broken…
The Free Folk poured through, not with clumsy rage but
with purpose and guidance—some say Daenerys
promised them lands if they bled the South for her.
Others whisper of darker powers, of threats from
Wargs and the Old Gods vengeance.
"A Crown of Ash"
Before Robert's death, in one moment of rare foresight
or perhaps deep mistrust, he made two fateful
appointments:
Stannis Baratheon, Lord of Dragonstone, was named
Hand of the King. A grim man feared and obeyed more
than loved. He took the title with clenched teeth and
iron will.
Renly Baratheon, the youngest of the brothers, was
granted the title Protector of the Realm. Where Stannis
inspired fear, Renly inspired loyalty. Where Stannis saw
duty, Renly saw opportunity and had the full support of
House Tyrell through his marriage to Margery.
When Robert fell, the court stood divided. But the
chaos of Targaryen fire left little room for civil
squabbling. Westeros could not afford a war of
succession, not while invasion loomed.
Thus, the brothers Baratheon did what few thought
possible; they stood together.
The banners of the realm were called.
Eddard Stark, Warden of the North, answered the
summons with the strength of Winterfell and the cold
pragmatism of the North. At his side rode Roose Bolton,
grim and quiet, with cruel eyes and leashed ambition.
Lord Tywin Lannister came from the West, gold
armoured and gold-eyed, not out of loyalty to Robert,
but to keep Daenerys from prying the Seven Kingdoms
apart and from breaking the Lannister’s’ grip on it.
The Night’s Watch, shattered but unbowed, sent what
strength remained. Black cloaks marched among royal
banners a final defence against the tide from the far
North.
The Reach, bound to Renly by blood and alliance, rallied
under the banners of House Tyrell. Highgarden’s
harvest and soldiers now marched for king and
country though whispers claimed Lady Olenna had
her own designs.
The war is no longer a whisper. It is a storm over the
realm, with all the noble houses fighting for the Dragon
Queen or to throw her back into the sea.
Daenerys burns her way through the South, her Khalasar tearing down the Dornish Marches. The
Riverlands bleed red with rebellion. The Ironborn raid
from Blackwater to the Neck. The North groans under
the Free Folk tide.
In King’s Landing, a council of war stands: Stannis, with
his iron law; Renly, with his silver tongue; Ned Stark,
the sword of the North; Tywin Lannister, the lion
watching his prey.
The Iron Throne sits heavier than ever.
Let the horns sound. Let the banners rise.
For when you play the Game
of Thrones…

You Die
There is no middle
ground…
So the Invading forces had to make headway into Westeros, so Thomas had "We Guard the Way" as the first scenario.

I have to say there were some really brutal games to begin with with the Invaders overwhelming the Defenders. The result of the round was that the Invaders had established a solid foothold on Westeros.
BETRAYALS: Seeing the way the Winds of War were blowing, House Bolton declared for Daenerys, betraying their Oaths to House Stark. The balance of power could have shifted, but Tywin Lannister had already secured the Mercenary forces that had sworn to the Invaders, so balance was retained despite the machinations and Machiavellian schemes at play...

The top ranked Defender faced the top ranked Invader.
GAME 2
"The Desolation of the Riverlands"
So the second game was another custom scenario where the Defender had to protect some farm buildings. Yup, Thomas had 2D farm buildings for every board.
The Invaders could score additional VP's by burning the buildings and the Defenders got additional units as the Peasants joined them.
I spent a lot of time watching Elliot and Baz from the Wardens of the North-West...
Mainly because as Baz closed in with his heavily armoured Baratheons to protect the farmsteads, Thomas made the announcement that thunderstorms had formed over the Riverlands and any buildign on fire would go out. And also, the rain had made the ground boggy (each player got to place a bog) and Elliott dropped his in front of the oncoming Baratheons, which resulted in two failed charges both by 1"... Comic timing, but not for poor Baz!

The Riverlands were aflame, but not decisively so and the Defenders of Westeros still had it all to play for, despite being behind on total VP's

Simply, A Game of Thrones, first to 14 VP's
Highlight of Carly's weekend was Jokin on his own dropping Wun Wun with four precision strikes from his 5 ? attacks...

And so the dust settles and the fires peter out after the Invasion of Westeros campaign event.
Many heroes died on both sides, towns were burned and large armies clashed.
The winner?
The Dragon Queen is now the new ruler! After help from the allies of Greyjoy, Martell, The Brotherhood and the treasonous Boltons. But most help definitely came from the giants of the North and the Free Folk!
After a 36 player event yesterday, of 2 teams of 18, we had our winners.
The Invading team amassed 416 Victory Points to the Defending 371 Victory Points after 2 custom games at 40 points then large scale warfare to finish at 60 points a side!
We had new units and new heroes for every faction, with 3D prints for the heroes and some AMAZING conversions for the new units.
The defenders have retreated but new alliances are being made, plots hatched and so long as the Dragon Queen sits of the Iron Throne... The War Is Not Over!
Thank you to all the players for journeying to Leodis Games for this event. Putting up with all my crazy rules but being rewarded with some great, well deserved trophies and prizes. You are all fantastic and come with the best attitudes. I put these events on for you as I know you'll love all the theme, fun and laughter.
