Battle of the Gold Road: Lannister v Targaryen Mega Battle

Matt Geary hosted a massive 160 point battle, with a fully grown Drogon and 80 points of Dothraki fielded by myself and Simon against 160 points of Lannister infantry ably led by Callum.

If you have three and a half hours, watch it in all its glory...

AND IT IS GLORIOUS!!!

If not, this is a poor attempt of a report, and contains spoilers to the main video!!!

(Yeah, I know, its like coffee cups that tell you its hot)

The Battle of the Gold Road - 160 Points - ASOIAF TTMG Bat Rep LIVE - YouTube

The keys rules were that the Dothraki units destroyed could come back on by swapping a zone out when claimed by an NCU.

Th Dothraki got victory points for killing units, Jaime Lannister and the food carts.

The Lannisters got points for wounding Drogon, Dothraki units and getting the carts and units into the city...

One of the four carts has a Scorpion with 4 attacks...

But 40pt Drogon always gets a save!!! But we said Scoprion would give it a -1

The carts that must be protected (or destroyed). They also hit like a chariot, doing D3 + a wound per remaining enemy rank

The Dothraki attack begins

With the cavalry horde attacking on both flanks, as Drogon flies in head on

The Lannister Commander Callum takes a well earned break after setting up

The Lannister Army is large, but the Dothraki has a larger Dragon.

The Dothraki planned to hit hard on the Lannister right with Drogon

Drogon will soon catch up with the cavalry

The aptly named Poor Fellows would be first to feel the heat...

Simon's left flank began with a unit of Halberdiers dying from Outrider arrows and a Screamer charge..
.

The Lannisters advanced swiftly on my flank, the Dothraki right, using their taunt to weaken my shooting

Drogon incinerated the poor Fellows as the Lannisters sought to strengthen their right. Dismounted Screamers (Stormcrow Dervishes) also aided the Dothraki attack.

The Lannister front lines were suffering, but the Honour Guard were exacting a toll

After cutting down a Halberdier unit, the veterans totally whiffed attacking the Pyromancers and were cut down in a flurry of crossbow bolts and green flashes

My Screamers hit the Poor Fellows at the van of the column of carts

as did my Hrakkar but it took 4 wounds on activation from a failed panic check before a precision attack finished it.

Drogon avenged the dead Lion

While Simon's units were making good progress on the left, I was trading a unit a time with the Lannisters.

The first cart got flanked but survived before I failed a 3+ charge to finish it off. It healed up as a second made its way past the dragon

The Lannister forced their way through on the Dothraki right, crushing my forces but they had lost a good number themselves. But the river was stymying their rear ranks

Simon's forces were making good in roads into the Lannister ranks but Jamie Lannister was now leading the charge with his Honour Guard

The Dervishes were marooned in the small copse as the Halberdiers by-passed them.

Bronn was bringing up the rear with Red Cloaked Honour Guard

I retreated out the woods but it was only to by time for reinforcements

Drogon incinerated a cart but the most advanced one ran through my unit to escape the flames

More Outriders sped on from the board edge towards the Halberdiers, with all our NCU's being used to bring on five units, four of which converged on the cart that had nearly reached safety.

My Veterans managed to get the charge in to prevent the cart escaping, cutting it down and swinging back towards the main battle

Jaime Lannister failed to charge the Dragon but took damage from its flaming breath attack. Bronn jumped on to the rear wagon, bringing the Scorpion to bear at close range

Ser Bronn of the Blackwater, would be Dragonslayer...

My dice had been lacking all game, but this was the pinnacle. We had tweaked rules to give the Scorpion a -1 to Drogon's save, so need 3+'s. 8 hits saw Drogon took FOUR wounds

This enraged the Dragon, who charged in and wiped out Jaime's Guards, Jamie dying as Drogon then went into the last cart. Drogon destroyed the cart, and was charged on three sides by Lannisters before swooping out of combat. With more Dorthaki closing in, and an angry Dragon in their midst, the Lannisters fled the field

That was great fun. As a themed battle, the Lannisters had little chance of winning from the outset, but Callum made a good fist of it by destroying my forces. Simon faired better and cut more Lannisters down than I, but Drogon was all powerful. Bad dice dropped him to half wounds, but overall he was relatively untroubled.

Thomas managed to get a massive haul of prize support, with sponsors from the following companies

Titan Trays Baron of Dice A Ballad of Fire and Ice Collection

Strata Miniatures Tritex Games Gamingfigures Ignis Potions The Unrelenting Brush

And the thing that really makes the Leeds events stand out as the tweaks to list building and scenarios, that are not too hard to comprehend, but are hard to and explain so I've listed them here

(Main one's are 50 point lists and all 7 tactic zones in play)

SPECIAL MEGA-GAME ANNOUCNEMENT

SUNDAY 18th MAY

GAME 1

Jake "Jakemorr" Morries

FREEFOLK

SCENARIO: A GAME OF THRONES

I've briefly spoken with Jake at the last event, but been chatting about Free Folk on line fora  few years now so it was good to finally meet and play each other. he is a sound bloke, and his Monsters of the North list is one I nearly replicated, but decided I needed Mammoths...

Scenario and Game Mode

JAKE'S LIST
Mag the Mighty - Mag Mar Tun Doh Weg Giant Spear Thrower Giant Spear Thrower Savage Giant Savage Giant Savage Giant Savage Giant Wun Wun

No NCU's, but that is what Thomas's event encourages, non-Meta lists...
I built lists (all 3) specifically to reflect the scenario names, not how good they
would be

With Game one being A Game of Thrones, I took Rattleshirt and called my list
A Game of Bones

Bonelord's Chosen wth Rattleshirt - The Lord of Bones (C) Followers of Bone with Champion of Bone Followers of Bone with Champion of Bone Free Folk Raiders with Raid Leader Varamyr Sixskins - Master Skinchanger
Wolf Pack Shadowcat Cave Dweller Savages with Tormund Giantsbane Free Folk Raiders with Borroq - Boar Skinchanger Borroq's Boar Wolf Pack NCU's
Craster, Lady Val & Mance Rayder

TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT

TERRAIN: Woods, Bog, Stakes and Hedge

MONSTERS: Giant, Wun Wun, Mag, Spear, Spear, Giant, Giant

Free Folk: Followers, Cave Dwellers, Borroq Raiders, Boar, Chosen,
Wolfpack, Followers, Raiders, Varamyr

With far more activation, and complete control of the tactics board, I advanced up the flanks, using Val and the Horses separately to get Varamyr up beyond the charge arc of the far right giant. I had taken both objectives closest to my side, but held back in the centre as Jake advanced there

ROUND 2

Jake went first, after I brought Shadowcat on to support Varamyr. He turned the Giant on my right to face the threat before losing three Raiders to a thrown spear (one hit, two from panic)

On the left, I had moved up my Followers of Bone to threaten the far left objective but Jake countered, charging in with a Giant who took two wounds from Horrific Visage but dropped half my unit

I had Mance take the swords an attacked back, failing miserably to damage the Giant

On the right, Varamyr took the far objective as my right Followers sat on the near one. Shadowcat ran around behind the Giant.

On the left, Tormund lived up to his name as he and the Cave Dwellers flanked the Giant, killing it and surging forth onto the far objective. Wun Wun turned to face as Mag had gave up his activation to get the dead giant to charge earlier. I kept m other units out of charge range, more or less before the last activation after Jake had ran out, which saw Borroq's boar run forward and take the centre.

BOARD END OF ROUND 2

The giants were encircled, with my units controlling all the objectives, and I was avoiding combat except where I could bring my numbers to bear. Mance had taken the swords, Craster the letters and Val the Horses to get the wounded Followers back onto the near left objective.

END OF ROUND 2

BONELORD 6 VP's (1 unit, 5 objectives)

MAG's MONSTERS 0 VP's

ROUND 3

I activated Shadowcat, charging the Giant in front of Varamyr as the far Giant was blocked from the charge by his big mate.

The Giant attacked back but with disrupt and weakened, only did one wound on my cat. I had Varamyr charge the Giant as wanted to keep them busy while I brought my units up

Jake played Blitz to get Wun Wun into my Followers of Bone, bludgeoning them to death to claim the near left objective.

Tormund and his Cave Dwellers went after Wun Wun but rolled poorly

Both units on the right had Endless Horde on them now, in the event the Giants got to grips with them

I took the swords to allow Tormund another attack, but despite needing 3+, my dice were not made aware...

Varamyr died to the weakened Giants attack, so I sent his loyal wolfpack in to slow it down

A failed charge by a Giant allowed my Raiders to charge it

Mag failed a charge against Borroq (he needed a 6+), so Borroq swung around with Val and took the centre

BOARD END OF ROUND 3

END OF ROUND 3

RATTLESHIRT 8 VP's (1 unit, 7 objectives)

MAG 2 VP's (2 units)

ROUND 4

I activated the Followers of Bone who charged the wounded Giant, killing it and surging forth back to the objective

But this triggered a "last of their kind" tactics card for Jake, so another Giant charged into my Raiders

Mance on the Swords saw Tormund and the Cave Dwellers drop Wun Wun

Borroq's Raiders managed to barely fend off thrown spears and a spear charge

My Wolfpack showed that my dice truly are not loaded

END OF ROUND 4

RATTLESHIRT 12 VP's (3 units, 9 objectives)

MAG's MONSTERS 2 VP's ( 2 units)

BOARD END OF ROUND 4 (& GAME)

's

No doubt about it, Jake suffered with no NCU's. Even turning to face burned a units activation and with Horses and Val, I simply outmaneuvered the Monsters and won on objectives. Tormund did a great job in killing giants, aided by the Cave Dwellers but Mag didn't even get into combat and I sacrificed units and my mini-monsters to keep the Giants at bay. Jake was a pleasure to play against but my maneuvering just proved too much

MATT's NIGHTS WATCH was also facing  FREEFOLK

My Mag list for Game 3

GAME 2

Joel "Joalf" Kelly

GREYJOYS

CUSTOM SCENARIO: KING OF THE HILL

Not played Joel before, but seen him at many events and he is a damn good Greyjoy player, so I knew this would be a tough test. Fortunately, I was running Mance commander, in The King of the Hill Beyond the Wall list

Followers of Bone with Mance Rayder - King Beyond the Wall (C)
Spearwives with Raid Leader & Jarl

Cave Dweller Savages with The Great Walrus
Frozen Shore Bear Riders

War Mammoth

Spearwives with Harma NCU's
Ygritte, Jon Snow, Lady Dalla & Styr

Joel had also opted for 4 NCU's in a nasty Baelor list
Iron Victory Crew with Baelor Blacktyde (C) & Reaver Captain
Ironmakers with Dagmer Cleftjaw
Drowned Men
Ironborn Bowmen with Drowned Prophet
Bloody Mummer Zorse Riders with Glory Seeker
House Harlaw Reapers with Lady Greyjoy & Qarl NCU's
Erik Ironmaker, Wendamyr, Beron Blacktyde & Petyr Baelish

TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT
TERRAIN: Corpse pile, Wall, BIG HILL, Bog Stakes

GREYJOYS: Zorses, Ironmakers, Bowmen, Drowend Men to rear, Reapers
(Iron Victory Crew in Outflank)

FREE FOLK: Spearwives, Mance's Followers, Cave Dwellers, Mammoth, Bear Riders
(Jarl's Spearwives in Outflank)

ROUND 1

I opted to go first, so Baelor came on straight away on my right flank. I took the Letters with Ygritte and weakened the bowmen, Joel moved Ironmakers up with Erik on Horses. I then took the Water gardens, and Joel moved his Zorses up slightly on my left

I did two wounds on a Zorse with a panic check from the Crown

Joel then activated an NCU, and I played Wildling Diplomacy. I gave Joel the card to read, and he carried on so I did D3+1 Wounds on the Drowned Men, killing them. The Zorses got healed before Joel activated the Ironmakers marching and putting them on the hill objective

So I made a 5+ charge straight into them with the Cave Dwellers

All my attacks hit...

Dropping two of the heavily armoured Greyjoys. My Mammoth also went for a long charge, needing a 6+ but I got a five first time, and a 1 on the re-roll

ROUND 2

I brought Jarls spearwives onto the board by the left objective which happened to be the scoring objective for this round. Before charging into the Zorses with Harma's Spearwives

I used Co-Ordination tactics to give the Cave Dwellers horrific Visage in case Joel was tempted to attack from the Swords.

My Bears were being mauled front and side, although Baelor did suffer four wounds from charging through the stakes

But I suffered badly, barely hanging on

But the attack allowed the Mammoth to move from Diversion Tactics, and he moved up ready to flank Baelor

The Zorses retreated out of combat, and my Cave Dwellers dropped another Ironmaker, after I dropped a rank from Bowmen shooting. But the Ironmakers attacked back with their Critical Blow...

Ten hits resulted which finished off the Cave Dwellers

So I charged in with Mance and his Followers of Bone, dropping two Ironmakers and gaining a Rattleshirt card (+1 armour)

The Mammoth charged in but rolled pretty poorly, doing only one wound

END OF ROUND 2

GREYJOYS 2 VP's (1 unit, 1 objective)

FREEFOLK 2 VP's ( 1 unit, 1 objective)

ROUND 3

Going first, I took the Swords and threw spears, missing all before charging Harma's unit into the Zorses flank but didn't manage to kill them. Bad Dice!!!

Joel took the letters, weakening Harma and I healed up off of the bags to deny it to Joel

I activated Harma but with weakened failed to hit... Nightmare!!!

Mance and the Followers of Bone also failed to dent the Ironmakers!!1

The Mammoth dropped the Iron Victory Crew to Baelor but he wouldn't die as the Mammoth only has one rank so the Iron Victory Crew auto passes morale

The Zorses healed up and fought back, but I charged the flank of the Ironmakers with a full unit of Spearwives, dropping them to a single rank.

Blacktyde Resentment was played and Mance, to the ultimate ruin of his army, failed his Counter-Strategy

I looked in a strong position on the hill with just the Ironmakers left to activate. And they did. With Blacktyde Resentment they had +2 to hit and +2 attacks, Vicious and then Dagmars Battle Scars gave them highest attack dice and rerolls. Throw in Critical blow and +1 attack from two pillage, 10 dice on 2+ with rerolls. The Jarl and his Spearwives were butchered in one bloody attack!!!

Still, at least I was contesting the objective!!! The Mammoth died after getting flanked by the Reapers though...

END OF ROUND 3

GREYJOYS 6 VP's (2 units, 2 objectives)

FREEFOLK 2 VPs (1 unit, 1 objective)

ROUND 4

Joel took the swords, using the same tricks to one shot Mance and his Followers of Bone

The Zorse Riders had previously retreated end of last round, so I tried a 3+ charge with Harma but I failed

Dagmar then charged them, losing a man for Fingerdance to make me Vulnerable

Wiping them out and securing a total victory for House Greyjoy

END OF ROUND 4 (& Game)

HOUSE GREYJOY 9 VP's (6 units, 3 objectives)

FREE FOLK 2VP's (1 unit, 1 objective)

That game really went downhill after I killed Joel's Drowned Men. His Ironmakers were immovable, his Iron Victory crew invincible and damn, but if those Zorse riders were incredibly lucky. I simply couldn't finish off a unit. and though i did control the tactics bard pretty well, while i won the left, Joel and his forces controlled the right and i bounced off of the Ironmakers on the hill. A comprehensive and deserved win for Joel.

GAME 3

STEPHEN "SLHopkinson" HOPKINSON

BARATHEONS

I've not met Stephen before, but I was looking forward to this game as I was running Mag and his Baratheon armour wouldn't help much. A slight tweak on Here We Stand

I'd christened my list HERE WE STAND: ON YOU!!!

Mag the Mighty - Mag Mar Tun Doh Weg
Savage Giant
Savage Giant
Savage Giant
Savage Giant
War Mammoth
War Mammoth NCU's
Lady Val & Ygritte Enemy Attachments
Mance Rayder - Abel the Bard

Stephens list was pretty tough, and would be a tough ask for most forces
Baratheon Sentinels with Cortnay Penrose (C)
Thorn Watch with Thorn Watch Sentinel
Stag Knights with Stag Knight Noble
Stag Knights with Stag Knight Noble
House Bolton Bastard's Girls with Pikeman Captain
Champions of The Stag with Fortune Seeker NCU's
Eldon Estermont & Walder Frey

I was using my "big" army of Giants

My Mag v normal mag...

TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT

TERRAIN: Palisade, Hedge, Hedge, Wall, Weirwood

BARATHEONS: Bastard Girls, Stag Knights, Thorn watch, Sentinels, Stag knights, Champions of the Stag (look like Riders of Highgarden)

MAG's MONSTERS: Giant, Mammoth, Giant, Mammoth, Giant, Giant, Mag

ROUND 1

We played through the tactics zone, me taking Letters, Stephen the Horses to move up his Champions (found real unit), Crowns for me killed two Bastard girls after they shot my chain wielding giant of the Swords.  The Champions moved wide on my right as I'd turned a giant to face. Stephen had blocked one unit of Stags at rear, as I simply marched into the face of the enemy

Centre of the battlefield

ROUND 2

Gorgo the Great (with the Chains) got shot again from the Swords.

So the first Mammoth went in, killing three

But Stephen rolled well on the panic check

They Boltons fought back, causing a wound but this allowed me to play Diversion tactics, putting my female giant in position to flank, which she duly did. after I killed Abel to deny any card shenanigans. (In hindsight now, Stephen should ahve got a point for Abel being killed, sorry)
Maggie didn't kill the Bastard Girls, but dropped them to two but when Stephen activated them, I played Monsters of the North and as they failed a panic check, they died.

The Stag Knights were next to feel the Mammoths force

I was pretty good at passing panic checks with my Monsters, I took this picture as it was lowest I'd rolled in first two turns...

The Sentinels had moved and charged one giant, doing one wound and out of arc of Mag. Then the Thorn Watch charged Mag, doing no damage before retreating away.

However, this allowed Mag to pivot...but that charge could wait

As Nok Nok, the Wallbreaker, charged into the Stag Knights with his battering ram

Having already been hit by the Giant the charged, the Sentinels were then flanked by Mag and wiped out. Gorgo with the chains healed up on activation with "Shrug it Off"

END OF ROUND 2

MAG's MONSTERS 5 VP's (2 units, 1 named character, 2 quarters)

BARATHEONS 2 VP's (2 Quarters)

ROUND 3

Stephen had the Thornwatch charge Mag, who took a few wounds. I took the Swords and Hurled Boulder with a giant at the Thornwatch, doing five wounds and a further three from a failed panic.

The Champions of Stag finally got into the fray. Five hits struck home...

But my new Monster dice I got from Thomas for themed lists worked really well, as  I saved them all

As the other Stag Knights repositioned,  my other Mammoth flanked the Stag knights already engaged

And the critical blow really came to the good, with me scoring nine hits, causing seven wounds and killing the unit...

Maggie, my female giant then got a charge into the other Stag Knights, killing two and another when they failed the resultant panic check

END OF ROUND 3

MONSTERS 9 VP's (4 Units, 4 Quarters, 1 named character)

BARATHEONS 3 VP's (3 Quarters)

BOARD END OF ROUND 3

                             ROUND 4

After taking a wound from the Champions, I activated my giant, playing Enrage to gain two more wounds, but giving me seven attacks. They did manage to survive until Mag flanked them then surged forth back to the beleaguered Stag Knights.

They got flanked by Nok Nok but valiantly held on with one wound

But the Monsters were queueing up and the last Baratheon fell when the Mammoth charged home

END OF ROUND 4 (& GAME)

MONSTERS 15 VP's (6 units, 8 Quarters, 1 commander)

BARATHEONS 3 VP's ( 3 Quarters)

Stephen really got unlucky with matching up against the Monsters on a board control scenario and with an 18" deployment. Also, the new dice were pretty decent, passing multiple panics with high rolls and those armour saves. When it was clear the Monsters were trampling all over him, Stephen just through his army against it in a valiant but futile attempt to kill something. It was a tough game but the larger giants did look good and Stephen acknowledged they did look intimidating...

Meanwhile, our resident scientific genius  Aden had a cunning plan to win against Matt, and his Free Folk on the tale next door.

No, seriously, he literally had a plan to work it all out!!!

Thomas Whitworth, organiser and all round good guy...
