Conquest: Dweghom v One Hundred Kingdoms

Chris and  I got together to run a 1000pt battle in preparation for some upcoming demonstration games we'll be running.

Warfare 2021,  Ascot Race Course UK

Beachhead Show, Bournemouth 2022

We figured 2000pts was too much, so tried 1000pt list. I was tinkering a lot with the new rules, so opted to make the whole force veterans

My 100 Kingdoms force was as follows:

Noble lord (mounted) with 4 stands of Household Knights (Standard & leader)
3 stands of Men-at-Arms (Standard & leader)
Imperial officer with 6 stands of Steel Legion (Standard & leader)
3 stands of Mercenary Crossbowmen

Noble lord (mounted) and Household Knights (Standard & leader)

Men-at-Arms (Standard & leader) and Mercenary Crossbowmen

Imperial officer with 6 stands of Steel Legion (Standard & leader)

Chris was running a more vanilla army list:

Hold Raegh with 4 stands of Hold Thanes
3 Stands of Dragonslayers
Tempered Sorcerer with 3 stands of Hold Ballistae
5 stands of Hold Warriors

Hold Ballistae

We set up the board as below, with 2 VP's for each objective controlled on teh flanks and 1 VP in the centre. The house was too small to garrison...

Turn 1 & 2

No units managed to come on in Turn 1, so turn 2 resulted in a pair of units each. I marched the crossbowmen up onto the right hill.

Chris ran on the Hold Warriors behind the woods on his left, facing my crossbowmen...

The Hold Ballistae marched on centrally with Tempered Sorcerer...

The view from the Hill

The Hold Raegh & Thanes came over the hill on my left while the Men at Arms came on on my left...

The Hold Thanes...

And my smaller Men-at-Arms facing them

TURN 3

Chris managed to get all his units on, while I got my Knights but not the Steel legion

The Men-at-Arms  advance up onto the objective...

And are soon joined by the Noble Lord and his Household Knights

The Hold Thanes didn't "hold" back either, marching straight up but falling short of contesting

Same story on my right, not paying for standards mean 1" less movement on a march...

TURN 4

My Steel Legion failed to arrive again...

Chris went first and shot two crossbowmen with his Hold Ballistae. I responded by killing three with my enhanced volley from my veteran crossbowmen...

Not often my troops out-shoot my opponents...

On the left, the Hold Thanes charged home against my Men-at-Arms...

The Thanes managed to hack down 6 Men-at-Arms but I managed to pass all six resolve with their veteran enhanced morale...

The loss of a stand allowed my Noble Lord and his knights to charge into the Raegh and the Thanes but by clipping (and starting) in woods, I lost my Devastating Impact.

I managed 7 hits...

But the heavy armour and high resolve meant only 6 Dweghom went down...

The Noble lord and the Hold Raegh then fought a duel, with the Hold Raegh losing 3 wounds to the Noble lords 1

The Dragonslayers were not far away...

But as the Hold Raegh boldly issued his own challenged, the Noble Lord cut him down, although he was badly wounded in the process

On the right, the Hold Warriors grumbled against their order but complied and held the objective rather than charge the hill...

The Hold Thanes also kept hold of the left hand objective

END OF TURN 4

THE NOBLE 100 KINGDOMS 2 VP's

THE STOIC DWEGHOM WARRIORS 4 VP's

TURN 5

The "Heavy" Steel Legion automatically came on...

The Dragonslayers had to move before charging in, but were unable to attack by doing so.

The Household Knights struck back in style, scoring 14 hits...

Again, the high Dweghom armour and resolve resulted in only 6 casualties...

The Men at Arms failed to score many hits

While on the right the crossbow bolts were ineffectual against the Hold warriors

With only 3 falling, leaving the Warriors firmly ensconced on the objective on the right...

With the Men-at-Arms reduced down to two veterans, the depleted Dweghom still had sufficient numbers to control the left objective...

END OF TURN 5

THE VICTORIOUS DWEGHOM  8 VP's

THE DEFEATED 100 KINGDOMS 2 VP'S

A very quick game due to two simple factors: Poor army selection by me, and the innate toughness of the Dweghom.

The Steel Legion, 37% of my army points, simply arrived too late to take part which allowed the Dweghom to march up and encamp on the two high scoring objective and the small unit of Men at Arms could not contest the higher stands the Dweghom brought. Chris deployed well and his army was better designed. I will say that I was tinkering with the new army rules in my defence, but it was a mistake. While I did get the better of the Dweghom toe-to-toe, their resolve was good enough to keep their number up high enough to control the objective on the left...

The one positive to take was Chris's dismal dice rolling in the duels, I've never beaten the Hold Raegh before in one but he rolled so many 5,s and 6's for armour, the Dweghom Raegh dropped in two clashes. A deserved victory for the Dweghom!!!

Daario's Stormcrow Mercenaries v Tywin's Lannisters

Alex brought his Lannisters down to face my all Stormcrow army with its freshly painted Dervishes for our Thursday night game at Justplay https://justplaygames.uk/

Sadly, I left Bronn and Darrio Naaharis at home, so have stand in models for them...

Stormcrows

Stormcrow Dervishes with Daario Naharis (C)
Stormcrow Dervishes with Bronn
Stormcrow Mercenaries with Jaqen Hagar
Stormcrow Mercenaries with Stormcrow leiutenant
Stormcrow Archers

NCU's: Petyr Baelish& Varys

We rolled scenario, and it came up A Game of Thrones. We also randomly generated terrain and they ended up mostly in my side, left to right wood, wall, bog, weirwood, wall...

Alex is relatively new to game and picked a solid starter based force led by Tywin Lannister. It deployed my left to right: Knights of Casterly Rock, Lannister Guards with Assault veteran, Halberdiers with Tywin, Mountains Men with Jamie Lannister. NCUs were Cersei, High Sparrow and Pycelle.

TURN 1

I deployed with Lt's Mercenaries on left, Bronn's Dervishes, Daario's Dervishes, Jaqen's Mercs and then Archers right.

Alex chose to go second, so I took the cards while he followed with the horses on Jamie's Mountains Men. I marched up on the right with Jaqen.

Having marched up onto the right objective, my archers were in range of the Mountains Men who i panicked and weakened on my next activation.

Sadly, Tywin marched up into range next, and I opted to shoot him with the swords...

Scoring an impressive 6 hits, I had to reroll due to weakened

And got half as many...

One Halberdier was lost, but Tywin failed his panic...

Sadly, I didn't realise the new Lannister Supremacy was an order, and I lost two...

The influence of the High Sparrow allowed the halberdiers to heal 3 as I was crown zapped

End of Turn 1 tactics board.

Board END of TURN 1

All forward to the fight

TURN 2

Alex activated first and took the Horses with Pycelle, who weakened the archers. The Mountains Men advanced up ready to charge, so i took the bags with Baelish but used the swords to drop two off of the incoming Mountains Men. (Didn't realise Jamie gave +2 morale, with a nasty order). In they came, with their critical blow...

Oh how I do like lucky dice...

I did save two though...

And despite vicious kicking in, I managed to pass my morale check...

I activated Jaqen Mercenaries to flank the Mountains Men, scoring 3 hits and dropping but thanks to Jamie's morale boost passed their panic...

The Sparrow too the swords but the Mountains Men fluffed their attacks...

So in went the wakened Halberdiers, who after re-rolls scored 1 hit. Sundering and in the flank...

And I got the only result I needed. No panic, no restored wounds due to Sparrows influence...

Varys took the crown to avoid it being used against me. Tywin passed his panic.

I then used issue commands to allow Jaqens Mercs to attack again, and the result was pretty good, dropping Jamie's Mountain men down to 2 as he failed a panic after wounds. This allowed the Guards to take the centre objective, and after I took the left one, I had to receive a charge from teh Knights, dropping 4 Dervishes as Bronn had increased defence and morale with bags...

Not that my dice needed Bronn's help...

The board at END of TURN 2

END OF TURN 2

THE LIONS OF LANNISTERS 2 VP's (1 destroyed unit, 1 Objective)

THE DIRTY STORMCROW MERCENARIES 1 VP ( 1 Objective)

TURN 3

I used Varys on bags to allow the Mercs to finish off Jamie and the Mountains Men, and got the prize next turn!!! Tywin got an attack of the swords but the depleted rank and 4+ to hit saw them only score 1 wound and I passed my panic.

My newly added Jaqen Lannister's Mercs activated and struck the Halberdiers, dropping them to a rank with the help of reckless strike...

Tywin then struck back at his wayward son, scoring a couple of wounds but Jaqen Jamie failed his morale for 2 more. When the crown was used to panic the Stormcrows and I passed, I used a token off Varys and caused 3 hits and wounds on Tywin...

I left the objective on the left to flank the Knights, scoring two wounds.

I really enjoyed Mercenary Jamie fighting his old man...

The Knights attacked the Dervishes...

6 hits was the result... and I saved all 6 !!!

As my Dervishes had retreated following their attack, Cersei took the horses and had the Knights of Casterly Rock retreat out of combat. I used Varys's last token to shift Darrio's Dervishes, right 3".

This allowed them to activate and charge in and finish off  Tywin Lannister!!!

Board at END of TUN 3

House Lannister 3 VP's (2 from objectives, 1 unit)

Jamie Lannister and his Mercenary Stormcrows 3 VP's (2 units, 1 objective)

TURN 4

Alex took the horses to get the Knights over towards Daario and his Dervishes.

I had Baelish take the letters but use the bag to heal Jaqen Jamie's unit...

Alex charged the Knights in...

Hitting hard, I saved half...

I took the swords but swapped it for Sellsword Negotiations to heal up Daario's unit...

Cersei's crown had no effect on Jamie who charged in planning to use reckless strike but I rolled a 1 so no card...

This allowed the Lannister Guards to charge the Mercenaries in the rear, leaving Jaqen alone with a panic check on a 7+

Result!!!

Lannister v Lannister???

Battle at END of TURN 4

DAARIO's  STORMCROW's 7 VP's (2 from units, 5 from objectives)

LIONS OF CASTERLY ROCK 3 VP's (1 unit, 2 objectives)

Meanwhile, Raymond's Baratheons were hammering away at Colin's Targaryen's.... It ended 8-8 at end of Turn 6,with Colin taking the win on unit left

Dale's Starks caught me spying as Aden concentrated on getting his Greyjoys out of the pickle he was in...

TURN 5

I used Varys on the bags to allow Daario and his Dervishes to attack, reducing the Knights down to a solo horse and then they retreated away. The Knights then finished off Jamie.

I then activated Daario and they charged into the Knight's finishing them off and surging back onto the objective...

The Guards did try and finish off Bronn's Merc's but Bronn held on.

END OF GAME

STORMCROW MERCENARIES 11 VP's

HOUSE LANNISTER 4 VP's

That was an excellent battle, and my dice were really hot. Alex is still learning the game and really went straight at it, the mountains men were unlucky not to break right through the Archers, which allowed me the flank. I misjudged, expecting the Halberdiers to hit my rear opening them up for the Dervishes. The Stormcrows certainly performed better than the Bloody Mummers but then Alex had a relatively friendly Lannister list and didn't take the bag in any round which aided me. As per usual I had some pretty good rolls, and thought Jamie Lannister was brilliant for me. Ja'qen is not someone I've used before but I'll be sure to use him in future...

Alex's list was good but I think missile troops are now a good call for any force and I still don't rate 3 NCU's at the expense of a fifth unit. Great to play Alex as he is more fluff orientated than filth, which is best way to play (we kept the objectives hidden until a unit took them)
