Starks v Baratheons: A Dance with Dragons

Barry came over to mine on Thursday to run out his Baratheon's against my Starks playing

A Dance with Dragons

I Barry predominantly plays Ray, but with the London GT on the horizon, he is getting more games in in preparation and so I decided to was run my recently successful Robb double Tully list again.

House Tully Sworn Shields with Robb Stark - The Wolf Lord (C)

House Tully Sworn Shields with Rickon Stark & Osha

Stark Bowmen with Crannogman Warden

House Umber Berserkers with Greatjon Umber

Shaggydog

Grey Wind NCU's

Eddard & Catelyn Stark

Elsewhere, Aden hosted Ray for a Greyjoy v Baratheon Livestream on the

Wardens of the North-West You tube channel

(LINK)

Barry's list was a pretty hard infantry list led by Stannis.

Stag Knights with Stannis Baratheon

R'hllor Lightbringers with Davos Seaworth

King's Men with Andrew Estermont

Baratheon Wardens with Devan Seaworth

R'hllor Queen's Men with Bryen Farring NCU's

Alester Florent & Shyra Errol

RANDOM TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT

TERRAIN: Palisade, Bog, Hedge, Woods

We kept the objective cards hidden until the objective was claimed

BARATHEONS: Kings Men, Queens Men, Lightbringers, Stannis Stag Knights, Wardens

STARKS: Rickons Tullys, Shaggydog, Robb Tullys, Bowmen, Umber Berserkers, Greywind

ROUND 1

I chose sides, so Barry opted to take the first activation Round 1, taking the Horses and advancing teh Queens Men down towards the centre objective. I countered with Letters, weakening the R'Hllor Lightbringers

My opening card hand

After the Wardens marched up on my right, I marched up my Bowmen to give me some fields of fire. Robb had used Tactical Reposition to shift up a bit.

Barry marched the Queens Men into the bog, losing a man to the Overwatch fire from the Crannog Warden in the Bowmen before Robb marched up and took the centre objective. I then played Swift Reposition to shift back 2"

Barry had already taken the Crown killing two Bowmen with the panic check, so I took the Swords and dropped another Queens Men. Their armour re-rolls due to the crown being controlled by Barry was very helpful...

Tactics Board End of Round 1

Board End of Round 1

Barry had marched up across the Board, I had swung Rickon and Shaggydog left while my Umber advanced on right. I resisted using Greywind to pounce on the right objective, moving over behind the Umbers so he was in strike range of the Lightbringers

ROUND 2

I had Catelyn take the Swords

I used my Bowmen to drop three Lightbringers, after shifting back slightly

Barry used Devan's Reckless Heroism to auto-charge the Wardens into Greatjon and his Berserkers, losing one man on the D3 roll but claiming the objective.

I lost Berserker as the Forest increased my defence, and lost a second to a counterstrike from my one failed hit whenI activated my Berserkers, shifting across to deny Stannis a charge and played Northern Ferocity on the attack, cutting down seven Wardens, three to the failed panic, and retrieved the objective

Disappointingly, I lost one Tully to the Lightbringers shooting, and failed my panic for two more, even after spending an Eddard to re-roll. And Barry put the objective ahead of me, closer to the Queens Men

I activated Robb and his Sworn Shields, reclaiming the centre objective

I had targeted my Bowmen with the bags to remove a weakened and prevent the Wardens healing I targeted the Lightbringers with my Bowmen on activation

My shooting had been pretty good so far

The Lightbringers armour was pretty resilient though, and he only lost three, passing the panic and using Baratheon Conviction to heal two. The the Queens Men charged Robb, becoming Disorderly due to Superior Positioning. But Barry threw my Vulnerable token back at me with Stags Wit

With my armour and Shieldwall, I took no wounds thus auto passing the morale and causing a wound on the Queens Men

I then marched Rickon across, blocking the Kings Men from charging Robb's unit

Board End of Round 2

Stannis's Stag Knights were blocked in by the warden and Lightbringers and Shaggydog seized the left  objective

END OF ROUND 2

STARKS 3 VP's (3 objectives)

BARATHEONS 0 VP's

ROUND 3

Barry used Davos Supply Aid to heal the Wardens, then took the bags to heal the Lightbringers. I took the swords and shot into the Wardens, killing those that had been healed. Barry then activated the Queens Men and cut two Tullys down, stealing the centre objective and I played Sudden Retreat on Robb, who backed out and healed up three.

Barry had attacked with the Wardens, killing two more Umbers. I killed another with shooting before Stannis moved up into an area to be more useful and block Greywind from flanking the Wardens This allowed me to shift with the Umbers to allow Greywind in should their attack fail.

The attack was sub standard, and I lost more Umbers in the attack as the Wardens lost two, then were wiped out by a failed panic. Check. I lost 4 from counterstrike, then two from Final Strike being played. Still, the Wardens were dead...

BOARD END OF ROUND 3

I had sent Greywind in on a 4+ charge to engage the Lightbringers, Rickons Tully Shields exchanged blows with the Kingsmen. Robb pivoted and then marched across to the right to help the Umbers v Stannis

Shaggydog moved behind the Palisades while the Tullys held their own...

And Stannis had his work cut out on the right

The centre was held firmly by the Baratheons but Davos had a direwolf to contend with

End of Round 3

 STARKS 6 VP's ( 1 unit, 5 objectives)

BARATHEON 1 VP (1 objective)

ROUND 4

I had Catelyn take the Swords and my bowmen attacked killing four Lightbringers and cutting Davos down to two

Barry played Test of Faith at the start of his activation but failed his morale

Then Stannis charged in through a wood, rolling a 1 so being disordered. This gave my last Umbers a 2+ save.

I lost one to the attack due to sundering but passed the panic and I healed four with an Eddard token. But I did lose the objective...

I then had Eddard take the bags. But rather than heal, I played Assault orders...

Greywind used it to destroy Davos and the Lightbringers

Then surged forth to block any Horse retreat for the Stag Knights

My Bowmen then poured in some arrows, but the Stag Knights used Resilience to shrug it off

On the left, Rickon and his Tully Sworn Shields seemed to be holding their own when I attacked.

But a Vulnerable token, some bad save rolls and a badly failed panic soon changed that. Andrew Estermont is also a Beast...

Robb charged into Stannis's flank, before the Umbers attacked but it took Greywind to hit them in the rear to part with the objective

End of Round 4

 STARKS 9 VP's (2 units, 7 objectives)

BARATHEON 2 VP (2 objectives)

ROUND 5

Barry took the Swords, and the Stag Knights cut down Greywind

I had Catelyn take the bags and healed up Robb's Sworn Shields

As I now outranked the Stag Knights

On the left, Estermont and the Kings Men hacked down Rickon and his Tully Sworn Shields

The Stag Knights failed to kill the Greatjon again, so I attacked back and then played Hit and Run to retreat away, before then surviving a panic check from the crown

Robb then cut Stannis down to a single rank, claiming the objective before playing my second Hit and Run and retreating out, healing as they went

END OF ROUND 5 (& Game)

HOUSE STARK: 11 VP's (2 units, 9 objectives)

HOUSE BARATHEON: 6 VP's (2 units, +1 Rickon, 3 objectives)

Board End of Game

Cracking game, as Barry's Baratheon's were well hard to break down. I managed to get ahead on the objectives, and didn't fancy trading blows with both Queens Men and Kings Men and left the centre to Barry, keeping hold of the flanks and picking off the weaker two Baratheon units while keeping the Kingsmen busy killing Rickon. Next up for me will be facing Ste and his Starks, in a Stark off. Pretty sure he wont take double Tully's now so he can prove how good he is without them...
