Valyrian Steel City - 3 Game Event in Sheffield UK

 December 2025

(I have a few events still to catch up so will release some more August and September)

Tim Whitney ran a one day, 3 game event (with additional Jousting) over at The Outpost in Sheffield. John Wall and myself travelled over the Pennines representing the Wardens of the North-West for it...

The winner's trophy

The event included a slight rules tweak in that you had to have a Jousting champion for your force for a joust after each match, and as all had same generic profile, got added to you army force as a solo cavalry unit. I decided to do a bit of conversion work on a spare Mountain I had to represent this.

                              Ser Toros,
The Crimson Bull,

Son of Ser Forley Prestor,

 House Prestor of the Feastfires

Bannerman to House Lannister

So accordingly, I ran my Lannisters to an event for the first time since Season 1 (I think). I used Tywin commander for both lists

My list for the first game had dual Stone Crows as I had just finished painting up both units, as below

Lannister Halberdiers with Tywin Lannister

Stone Crows with Tyrion Lannister

Stone Crows with Bronn

Lannister Crossbowmen

Knights of Casterly Rock with Gregor Clegane NCU's

Cersei Lannister Joffrey Baratheon Enemy Attachments

Jaime Lannister Turncoat

It's a really spacious venue with on site free parking

GAME 1

Cory "Khamoon" Vallely

NEUTRALS

A DANCE WITH DRAGONS

I'd met Cory at the Ribble Rumble (2025) event I ran a fortnight earlier, where I'd saw he was a pretty chilled player so was looking forward to playing him. He was running a Jokin led Neutrals force.

Stormcrow Archers with Jokin (C)
Stormcrow Dervishes with The Widower
Hedge Knights with Glory Seeker
Stormcrow Mercenaries with Vargo Hoat
House Bolton Blackguards with Bronn NCU's

Walder Frey
Petyr Baelish

TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT

TERRAIN: Wall, Wood, Weirwood & Stakes

NEUTRALS: Archers, Ser Carron Salt (Solo), Dervishes, Mercenaries, Blackguard and Hedge Knights

LANNISTERS: Bronns Stone Crows, Ser Prester (Solo), Tyrions Stone Crows, Mountain in Knights, Crossbows, Twyin Halberdiers

(A few activations in - I get excited)

ROUND 1 & 2

Both Cory and I were eager to get out Champions to lock horns. Mine is the Crimson Bull after all

I kept my line in good order, as the undisciplined mercenaries forged ahead with their Flayed Men and Black Guard (Cory was more  aggressive than I expected)

Board End of Round 1

With the Black Guard on the centre and going first, they charged in to Tyrions Stone Crows, losing 3 of the hill tribesmen. Fortunately, Tywin had tasked the Mountain with keeping an eye on his wayward child

My first attempt was pretty dismal...

 Thank the Seven for re-rolls...

Shockingly bad dice dropped the Blackguard to a solo fake Bronn when they failed their panic with a Hear Me Roar. Ser Toros flanked and finished him off

Ser Carron Salt decided he could face the Stone Crows alone to allow his Archers to take the left objective.

While my own solo Knight became "The Crimson Smear" when the Stormcrow Dervishes chopped him down

BOARD END OF ROUND 2

My crossbows retreated away after the Flayed Men mauled them a  bit, allowing Tywins Halberdiers to engage. Tyrion also got carried along with his partially healed Stone Crows and charged the Dervishes

END OF ROUND 2

LANNISTERS 2 VP's (1 unit, 1 objective)

NEUTRAL 2 VP's (1 unit, 1 objective)

ROUND 3

With first activation, I took the swords and hacked with the Halberdiers doing five wounds on the Flayed Men. The Stormcrows flanked my Stone Crows before I flanked the Flayed Men who failed all seven of nine saves, just enough to be wiped out

When the Dervishes activated, I played Subjugation of Power but this was countered by worth the risk which is an auto pass as the Widower is Jokin's vassal. They didnt do too much damage though and I followed that up with Bronns Stone Crows cutting down Ser Carron Salt

My Crossbows shot up the Stormcrows in the flank

Softening them up for the Knights to flank and finish them off

The Dervishes attacked Tyrion again from Issue Commands, dropping them to 3 before the panic

Which they passed well...

With four Mercenary units down, my Stone Crows ganged up on Dervishes while Tywin and his Mad Dog watched them work, secure with two objectives.

END OF ROUND 4

HOUSE LANNISTER 9 VP's (4 units, 5 objectives)

NO HOUSE NEUTRALS 4 VP's (1 Unit, 3 objectives)

ROUND 5

The Stone Crows survived (by retreating) and we activated out.

END OF ROUND 5 (& GAME)

HOUSE LANNISTER 11 VP's (4 units, 6 objectives)

NEUTRALS 5 VP's (1 Unit, 4 objectives)

BOARD END OF GAME

That was a pretty good game despite Ser Toros dying in ignominy. But the Knights were devastating on the charge, and the Stone Crows were surprisingly resilient. Cory losing the Blackguard like that, followed by the Flayed Men made it an uphill battle.

Still Cory had a chance to gain a modicum of revenge as Ser Carron faced Ser Toros in the first round of Jousting

ROUND 1

 Jousting

We both broke lances on the first pass

And turned for a second pass

The Old Man of the North was tilting adjacent to us

Ser Carron Salt was just an upstart Greyjoy B'stard on a mule...

Ser Toros was the pride of chivalry

And someone forgot to bring a lance...

Waving his firebrand to distract the mighty Prester's mount, the sneaky Ser Salt brought the Crimson Bull down...

Much to the crowds (ok, my) displeasure

There were some other Jousts taking place

GAME 2

Steve "Darkman" Butler

Winds of Winter

STARKS

Our resident High Sparrow impersonator and the only guy who goes to more events than me, I've been beaten by Ste too many times to count (with the occasional win for me. One?) I ran same list for this one as Game 1 while Steve was running a nasty aggressive Maege Mormont list as below.

House Karstark Spearmen with Maege Mormont (C)
House Mormont She-Bears with Umber Champion
House Umber Berserkers with Rickard Karstark
Umber Ravagers with Brynden Tully
House Mormont Bruisers with Crannogman Survivalist & Greatjon Umber NCU's
Catelyn Stark & Lyanna Mormont
TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT

TERRAIN: Woods, Corpse pile, Stakes, Wall

STARKS: Berserkers, She-Bears, Joust Champion, Spearmen,
Bruisers (Ravagers Outflanking)

LANNISTERS: Knights, Bronns Stone Crows, Crossbows,
Tywin Halberdiers, Tyrion Stone Crows

ROUND 1

We maneuvered about, with Steve opting to go first so I could expect Ravagers Round 2.

I decided to try a left swing with the Knights as felt the Brserkers were weakest point (I had the Turncoat and Jamie in there too) as Steve marched up in solid line

ROUND 2

I opted for cancelling out the tactics board while Steve took unengaged unit in enemy deployment zone

Brynden Tully and his Ravagers dropped in behind Bronns Stormcrows

I went for the charge into the Berserkers, sadly just clipping the corpse pile

And my dice failed me totally...

And Ste even saved one of them, passing his panic check too...

The Ravagers charged Bronn's unit in the rear

Given the failed charge of my Knights, I had Joffrey take the Swords to attack again

Using the Turncoat too

And where the charge failed, the swords attack nearly worked. But when Ste attacked, I survived well and the Berserkers failed the Lannister Supremacy panic check...

The Ravagers had ravaged my Stone Crows, wiping them out. Feeling safe behind the stakes, I used issue commands to turn the Crossbows, then charged the Ravagers on activation. Not ideal, but if would help hold them up while I brought my Knights back. I even killed a rider.

The Bruisers charged into Tyrion's Stonecrows

Maege and her Karstarks charged into the Halberdiers. My set for charge was stopped by Winter is Coming and I was made vulnerable

The Spearmen badly mauled me and the She Bears heedlessly charged over the stakes to finish off Tywin.

BOARD END OF ROUND 2

END OF ROUND 2

LANNISTERS 4 VP's (1 unit, free Jamie, 2 Mission)

STARKS 3 VP's (2 units, 1 Mission)

I had freed Jamie, wiped out the Berserkers and was ahead in VP's, but I was deep in the sh*t as Ste was all over me and had better positioning.

ROUND 3 & 4

Steve played control centre, I played if unit gets killed, put 2Vps on killing unit

Taking the Swords, the Ravagers chopped into my Crossbows

My Champion flanked the Ravagers, and did some serious damage, but then activated on full attacks due to Catelyns influence, cutting down my Crossbows.

ROUND 4

Ste played the control objectives I played swords and Horses

My Stonecrows held well on the right but Steve retreated his Bruisers and avoided combat. I even gifted a point trying to kill the ravagers.

BOARD END OF ROUND 4

END OF ROUND 4 (and Game)

HOUSE STARK 10 VP's (3 units, 7 Mission)

HOUSE LANNISTER 5 VP's (1 unit, Freed Jamie, 3 Mission)

I got over fixated on Jamie and after freeing him was badly out of position. Ste was able to concentrate his forces and defeat me with relative ease after that. Tyrion held well, but Steve was concentrating on scoring from the mission, so didnt need to bother with the Halfman as he surged ahead in the last two rounds. No complaints, didnt play the mission well.

But I had the chance for the Crimson Bull to restore some honour

ROUND 2 Jousting

Ste's beautifully painted champion

I lost rather quickly, much to my own embarrassment

On the adjoining table

John Wall's "Santa" v Chris Bakers "Tiny"

SOME NICE ARMIES

JOHN WALL FREEFOLK

CHRIS BAKER LANNISTER

GAME 3

George "glake270" Blake

A Clash of Kings

HOUSE STARK

Seen George at a few events, but hadn't played him before so was looking forward to it. He and the rest of the merry men of  the Sherwood Foresters are getting around to most UK events all over the country, which is great to see.

George had selected a high activation Stark list as below:
Eddard's Honor Guard with Eddard Stark (C)
House Bolton Cutthroats with Bran & Hodor
Summer
House Karstark Spearmen with Rickon & Osha &Survivalist Shaggydog
Stark Bowmen with Crannog Warden NCU's
`Sansa, Arya & Lyanna Mormont

I opted for my cavalry heavy force as below

Red Cloaks with Tywin (C)
Knights of Casterly Rock with Mountain
Knights of Casterly Rock with Butcher

Knights of Casterly Rock with Butcher NCU's
Cersei & Joffrey

TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT

TERRAIN: Bog, Wall, Wood, Hedge

STARKS: Summer, Karstarks, Joust Champion, Bowmen,
Honour Guard, Bolton Cuthroats, Shaggydog

LANNISTERS: Knights, Mountain Knights, Knights,
Joust Champion, Tywins Red Cloaks

ROUND 1

I had Joffrey take the Letters and weaken the Bowmen

The only other real excitement was the Bowmen losing half their men to panic from Red Cloaks

BOARD END OF ROUND 1

I had closed right up ready to charge home with my Knights

ROUND 2

I failed to take out the badly wounded bowmen... nightmare!!!

Weirdly, no one took the Swords until last. Now that's a tactics board rarity!!!

The Bowmen had retreated out of melee, so swords were no use. When I Crown zapped them with Cersei, playing Hear me Roar, they still laughed at me....

Ser Toros failed to kill Summer, despite my charge...

END OF ROUND 2

HOUSE LANNISTER 3 VP's

HOUSE STARK 2 VP's

ROUND 3

My Red Cloaks got flanked by the Cutthroats. I had cleared out the longbows, the Karstarks but my Knights were out of position to help them

Eddards Honour Guard finished them off after Summer, having disposed of Ser toros from the Swords had cut me right down. Eddard killing Tywin gave George additional VP's

END OF ROUND 3

HOUSE LANNISTER 6 VP's

HOUSE STARK 6 VP's

BOARD END OF ROUND 3

ROUNDS 4 - 6

Two units of Knights v two hard infantry and their Dire wolves.

I couldn't catch them and score in Round 4

END OF ROUND 4

HOUSE LANNISTER 8 VP's

HOUSE STARK 8 VP's

Desperate attempts to score points failed

I did plink  Shaggydog but the Cutthroats caught my Knights and contested the objective

END OF ROUND 5

HOUSE LANNISTER 9 VP's

HOUSE STARK 9 VP's

ROUND 6

The Cutthroats cut down my Knights on the right, so I had to try and kill Eddard. A valiant attempt failed...

END OF ROUND 6 (& GAME)

HOUSE STARK 11 VP's

HOUSE LANNISTER 9 VP's

A real cracking game, as I destroyed the Starks on my left, but they in turn destroyed my right. George's ability to out activate me and control the tactics board meant I was chasing a second game when I had over committed. George played really well, and frustrated me int eh last 3 turns by keeping out of the fight until he knew he could do me in. A really close game, but his infantry was ultimately to tough for my Knights to crack

Alas, with two jousting defeats, I didn't make the Grand Joust...

THE JOUSTING FINALE

No commentary in the preliminaries....

Mickey Arnolds Clip Clop made it through to the final

Facing off against my first round foe, Cory's Ser Carron Salt

Who toppled the Giant on from his hobbyhorse...

A great event, three really good games and a run out for my Lannisters, first in a long time. The Jousting added some real fun to it, and sadly, with the changes to Stats, I cannot give much in the way of who won what, but only to re-iterate it was a really chilled, fun event.
