Chris, Andy and I headed down to Derby from the North-West for a 3 game Conquest event at Board & Swords with Chris running W'adrhun, Andy Spires and my One Hundred Kingdom.
These aren't my 100 Kingdom, they are Lynsey Swift's beautiful "White Wolves"
Board and Swords is a great venue North of Derby with a great range of games, particularly my favourite two of A Song of Ice and Fire and Conquest. Ian and Jordan were very welcoming with drinks and stuff, so many thanks for that...
My list is as below:
Character: Noble Lord (Cavalry) with 5 stands of Household Knights
6 stands of Household Guard
Character: Theist Priest (Holy Fire) with 4 stands of Militia Bowmen
Character: Mage Priest (School of Water) with 7 stands of Men-at-Arms
6 stands of Men-at-Arms
The first scenario was "Bottleneck" where the game was played the length of the board and VP's were scored as 1 VP for objective nearest your deployment, 2 VP's for middle one and 3 VP's for the one furthest from our deployment edge.
And my opponent was Chris with his W'adrhun, running the following:
Character: Matriarch Queen (Warlord) with 5 stands of Blooded (Medium)
5 stands of Braves (Medium)
3 Warbred (Medium)
Apex Predator (heavy)
Character: Predator, riding an Apex Predator (Heavy)
3 Raptor Riders (Light)
3 stands of Hunters (Light)
TURN 1
Chris managed to get both his light units on and I got mine on too
Not often we play length wise, certainly gave Chris's speedier units an advantage as his reinforcement lines would be higher
TURN 2
Hmmm, I didnt get any units on as reinforcements, while Chris got his Blooded
And his Raptors were at the halfway line already. Definitely on the back foot in this scenario
TURN 3
Activating first, I advanced up with the Militia Bowmen and fired at the Raptors
and scored an impressive 4 hits...
The agile Raptors evaded two of them though, but they were infuriated and tried a long range charge
Chris needed a five, and got it charging in with a frenzied, feathered flurry hitting with all 15 attacks
Chris wiped out the whole unit and Theist priest and also scored with his "Unstoppable" mission card...
My six stand unit of Men at Arms moved up to counter the Raptors while my Mages Men at Arms unit advanced up the centre to try and start scoring next turn, as Chris was already doing that
TURN 4
Chris activated first and retreated his Raptors away from my Men at Arms
Who had no choice but to run after them...
Allowing Chris to spring his trap, as the Warbred arrived and charged in, doing a few impact hits...
Chris also got his Braves on as well as his unridden Apex Predator, both on the left...
to counter my Household Guard and my soon to arrive Household Cavalry...
With their arrival, Chris advanced up his Hunters and threw a few spears at my Knights...
BOARD AT END OF TURN 4
W'adrhun 3 Victory Points 100 Kingdoms 1 Victory point
TURN 5
I knew what would happen if I took the sacrificial bait of the Hunters, but I didn't have the luxury to not risk it if the card selections didn't work out
Winning activation, I activated my Men at Arms to attack the Warbred...
Scoring six hits, I managed to drop one of the brutes...
Chris's first activation was with the Warbred and he had timed it well to get his Death cards to maximum. Essentially, each activation of a "Death" cult unit places a card on the side, and on the third placement the "chanting" reaches a crescendo and the activating unit gets bonuses in melee. The result is very nasty, as I lost half my Men at Arms
With the left side in trouble, m Knights had no choice but to charge into the jaws of the W'adrhun...
As the first charge of the Turn, I scored For Glory...
And by wiping them out in one, I also scored Righteous charge...
Chris's Braves attempted to flank the Knights but failed the charge...
Sadly, the Apex Predator did not...
Chris had taken the central objective with his Blooded and his Raptors had come back to the fray, as the Water Mage and Her Men at Arms tried to stem the savage tide...
The Knights lost 5 wounds to Impact hits...
And a further 9 to the savage beasts mauling
BOARD AT END OF TURN 5
W'adrhun 5 VP's 100 Kingdom 4 VP's
TURN 6
I won activation priority and my Men at Arms hacked at the Warbred
scoring an impressive 7 hits...
but Chris managed to hang on in there with a sole wound on his last Brute
Chris activated his Apex Predator and it finished off my Household Knights, I had the Mage adn Her Men at Arms charged into the Blooded but only succeeded in killing 5...
The lone Warbred attacked my depleted Men at Arms, hitting 4 times.
In the ultimate act of futile defiance, needing ones, I rolled four of them...
I made a long range charge into the Apex Predator with my Household guard, leaving it on a single wound...
The Raptors charged into already broken Men at Arms and were wiped out
The not so Braves failed another charge...
The Matriarch Queen healed up her Blooded
who then cut down half of my Men at Arms
Allowing the Predator and his T-Rex mount to flank them and obliterate them...
END OF TURN 6
W'adrhun 9 VP's 100 Kingdoms 4 VP's
Board at End of Turn 6
I activated first, with my one remaining unit...
And killed and Apex Predator...
Chris charged in the Braves but they could not make much of an impact.
Chris moved his other units to garner points and the game ended.
END OF TURN 7
W'ADRHUN 14 VP's 100 KINGDOMS 4 VP's
The ferocious horde own the field
Having played against each other on Thursday I knew this would be a tough game to win but the scenario and my inability to get reinforcements on in Turn 2 left Chris is a dominant position early on. He played flawlessly and simply picked me apart piecemeal. I was just happy to finally manage and drop one of the big Beasts to be honest...
Meanwhile, on the other tables...
Nigel's Nord beasts with a pair of Jotnar's and two units of trolls were beating up on Ian's Spires, whose own beasts were not in the fight...
And Andy was swamping Lynsey's 100 Kingdoms with his horde of Force Grown Drones...
GAME 2
100 Kingdoms v 100 Kingdoms Maelstrom scenario
Lynsey had a beautifully painted army, with 10 activations as I recall, and burnished with the liveried with the sigil of The White Wolf. Given that mine were done with The Black Wolf, it seem we were having an internal civil War in one of the Great Houses!!!
The White Wolves
Noble Lord on foot with 5 stands of House Hold Guard
3 stands of Militia Spearmen
3 Household cavalry
Chapter Mage (Air) with 4 stands of Crossbowmen
3 Men at Arms
Imperial Officer with stands of 5 Men at Arms
3 stands of Steel Legion
TURN 1 & 2
Lynsey got her crossbowmen on with an Air mage as well as her Militia, whereas I got my bowmen and Priest on
TURN 2
I moved up a bit with my bowmen on first activation and targeted the enemy Militia
And scored four hits... Great start!!!
The rest of the turn was moving units on and positioning, with my Mage and Men at Arms receiving some crossbow bolts but healed up and Household guard keeping pace with the Men at Arms. The Militia closed up on my bowmen and the Theist Priest hit them with Holy Fire as Lynsey brought her Knights up on my left and her Men at Arms with Imperial Officer centrally...
TURN 3
The Militia spearmen moved up and charged just to hinder my shooting. Lynsey got her Household guard on centre right and I advanced up mine centre left and also got my 6 stand unit on far right.
I managed six saves from getting shot and magicked at close range...
And as Lynsey's cavalry swung towards the centre, I brought mine on behind them
I finished off the Militia spearmen, while Lynsey countered my cavalry with stands of Steel Legion far left and 3 stands of Men at Arms on my right facing my 6
End of Turn 3
Lynsey's "White Wolves" 1 Victory Point
My "Black Wolves" 2 Victory Points
TURN 4
Lynsey got first activation and flanked my Men at Arms, and I lost 3 stands...
I attacked back for a paltry two wounds, before Lynsey's Men at Arms charged my Household Guard
but the Halberds held them off, as I only lost 3 men...
In a blur of speed and dice, I charged the Steel Legion in the woods so I lost my Impact hits. Amazingly, I wiped them out...
Helped by some horrific dice on Lynsey's part, as per sample below...
My water mage failed to cast Nimuah's tears...
END OF TURN 4
White Wolves 2 VP's Black Wolves 5 VP's
TURN 5
I activated first with my Household Guard and cut the enemy Men at Arms down to half. Lynsey's Household Guard then charged into the Militia bowmen and Theist Priest cutting them down in one swift attack, earning extra point for Defy Witchery mission card.
The Imperial Officer of the White Wolves were hanging on...
The Household Cavalry of the White Wolves
The Lord of the White Wolves, with his pet Direwolf...
Having been charged in the flank by them last turn, my Men at Arms performed a combat reform and turned to face the enemy. On the left, my Cavalry had reformed having been crossbowed twice after their charge into the Steel Legion.
While my Water Mage again failed to cast her healing spell...
END OF TURN 5
White Wolves 5 VP's Black Wolves 6 VP's
TURN 6
I was poised to hit the crossbowmen with For Glory card and defy witchery which would score me two additional points as well as be in position to contest the objective. That was the beautiful plan I had. But alas, Lynsey won the initiative and had taken the risk of activating the crossbows, with the Air magic buffs she had been using so effectively.
And the bolts cut me down my remaining Knights, taking my noble Lord with them...
I had to make do with annihilating the Imperial Officer in his Men at Arms instead.
My Men at Arms were struggling on the right, failing to hit as they attacked...
But my Mage finally got her words right, and healed six on my left unit...
END OF TURN 6
WHITE WOLVES 10 VP's BLACK WOLVES 7 VP's
TURN 7
Lynsey won the dice roll and took the opportunity to finish off my right Men at Arms, with a meagre three hits and me failing all 3 armour saves and all 3 resolve checks
I took the opportunity to reform my House Hold Guard on the Centre as they White Wolves prepared to pounce
I managed another combat reform on the left and finally brought down a knight
But with both flanks objectives the White Wolves had no need to finish the job, as my force was spent and their victory was assured...
END OF TURN 7
Lynsey's White Wolves 12 Victory Points
My Black Wolves 9 Victory Points
That was an awesome game, with so many highs and lows on both sides!!! I scored two quick kills on the militia and Steel Legion in particular. But that charge left me out of position and the magnificent Air Mage with her spells gained time to reposition and cut down my noble cavalry. The battle was won on the flanks as I had secured the centre but in turns five and six Lynsey managed to haul back the Victory points and take the lead, and her "Wolf" pack simply proved too strong. I've certainly learned to check out the other spell lists now. Very well deserved win for Lynsey...
GAME 3
IAN MANN, SPIRE: HEAD to HEAD
Ian was running a nine activation Brute heavy list, something along the lines of:
Biomancer with 6 stands of Force Grown Drones and Catabolic node
3 stands of Stryx
Lineage Highborn with 4 Avatara
6 stands of Incarnate Sentinels
High Executor with 3 stands of Force grown Drones
3 stands of Marksmen Clones
Simple scenario: 1 VP for every unit or character destroyed, plus 1 VP for killing enemy warlord, plus mission card points...
TURN 1
Ian got his Stryx on and his FG Drones with Warlord on centrally. I didn't get mine on
TURN 2
The board at start of Turn 2
The Stryx flew back as my bowmen came on my left (with the Priest on his pulpit) as my Men at Arms also came on both centrally but leaving a gap
Ian didn't get anything on oddly enough...
TURN 3
Both Men at Arms moved up...
And as Ian did same with drones and Stryx I advanced up with the Bowmen and dropped a winged Harpy thing...
The Incarnate Sentinels had marched on centrally and the smaller Executor FG Drones had came on my right, with the Warlord and his FG drones aiming for my smaller unit of Men at Arms. But with my whole force on, I was able to bring on my cavalry to flank them if I could get first activation.
TURN 4
I got the first activation and launched a glorious charge into the exposed flank of the Force Grown drones, wiping them out in once thunderous crashing of hooves...
This scored me 5 VP's, 1 for two cards, plus the two mission cards below plus one for the enemy Warlord.
The Stryx charged the front of my large Men at Arms, kinda suicidal but it freed up my flank for the Incarnate Sentinels. And I did lose a stonking 8 men!!!
Sure enough, the Incarnates flanked my knights. and killed 7 on impact. I also got hit 9 times and need 1's to save...
TA DA!!!!!! I survived but was still sorely depleted.
My Men at Arms plucked the Stryx but left one alive to frustrate me...
So my Theist Priest stepped up an cooked the turkey!!!
This is how the board looked just before the Avatara marched on into the woods on the left (the Stryx hasn't been removed yet)
END OF TURN 4
100 KINGDOMS 6 VP's SPIRE 2 VP's
TURN 5
I got the first activation and (having healed up eight men last turn by the way) charged my Men at Arms into the flank of the Incarnate Sentinels. To my horror, they have armour 4 and 6 wounds!!!
Still, I did drop one...
Activating them, Ian smashed my Knights and Warlord down...
I then activated my second Men at Arms and got the charge into the smaller FG Drones with the Executor
And wiped them out, unfortunately leaving themselves wholly exposed to the Clone Marksmen
My Militia bowmen targeted the Avatara and caused a few wounds
Starting in the woods meant I didn't suffer the impact hits when the Avatara flank my Mage and her Men at Arms. I managed to save a few and activated the mage
Who again failed to get the spell off...
END OF TURN 5
100 KINGDOMS 9 VP's SPIRE 5 VP's
TURN 6
A view of the battlefield. It was going to be five turns of proper attritional warfare
I got the first activation and hacked down another Incarnate Sentinel with my Men at Arms
and a further by failed resolve and hits from the Men who had rallied first.
Allowing me to decline the challenge again
The Avatara cut me down to a sole stand of Men at Arms but I cut the Incarnate's down to two with my House Hold Guard...
The Incarnate Sentinels dropped six House Guards. And I shot one of the Avatara dead too
END OF TURN 6
100 KINGDOMS 9 VP's SPIRE 5 VP's
TURN 7
Board at start of Turn 7
Ian got the first activation and shot up the remnants of my right Men at Arms with his Marksmen Clones...
I activated the Household Guard and hacked away at the Incarnates but failed to drop one...
The Highborne sought out a new escort as the Mage kept ducking her...
END OF TURN 7
100 KINGDOMS 9 VP's SPIRE 6 VP's
Board at End of Turn 7. The Militia Bowmen charged in to add resolve checks and also the Theist Priest has Cleave 1
TURN 8
Ian won the dice and the Incarnates savaged my Household Guard, breaking them. I attacked back and dropped one before the Marksmen finish the Household Guard off.
The Avatara finished off the Men at Arms and I failed to kill the last one of them!!! Aaaargh!!!
END OF TURN 8
100 KINGDOMS 9 VP's SPIRE 9 VP's
TURN 9
I got the first activation and the Theist Priest inspired the bowmen to attack...
Nice rolls!!!
Nice result... the Marksmen Clones did manage to drop three militia bowmen though and the Incarnate Sentinel turned and charged in, just for Impact hits.
END OF TURN 9
100 KINGDOMS 11 VP's SPIRE 9 VP's
TURN 10 (LAST TURN)
I got the first turn again, striking down the Incarnate Sentinel.
The 12 Marksmen Clones aimed and shot up the Militia bowmen, breaking my unit but not destroying it...
END OF TURN 10
HUNDRED KINGDOMS 12 VP's SPIRE 9 VP's
Wow, another awesome game!!! Do they get any closer??? A standard, servite, leader and Theist Priest were all that survived. Well at this event they did actually, as Nigel won game two v Chris with just a troll on one wound surviving!!! We both just went for it and slugged it out and it was a prefect end to a great days gaming.
Lynsey's White Wolves of the Hundred Kingdoms deservedly won Best Painted Army
ANDY CAME IN THIRD PLACE WITH HIS SPIRE
NIGEL CAME SECOND WITH HIS NORDS
CHRIS WON CAME FIRST WITH HIS W'ADRHUN
AND I CAME AWAY WITH MOST SPORTING OPPONENT
MY PRIZE FOR LETTING PEOPLE BEAT UP ON ME
It was a great wee event, well chilled and no stress. Great to play other people and get their take on some rules. Many thanks to Ian and Jordan at Board and Swords for looking after us and it an event we plan to go back to (Ian hopes to run them frequently)
