Andy rocked up with 2500pts of Spire for a Maelstrom battle against Chris's Old Dominion and my Nords. We effectively had 4 x 1250 lists, with Chris and I alternating organising the card decks.
I'm sure I have an UGR that looks like this???
Maelstorm Scenario
Controlling the centre objective scores 2 VP's Turn's 1-4, 9-10. And 1 VP 5-8.
The two flanks would score 1 VP turns 1-4. 9-10 and 2 VP's 5-8
My Nords were led by a Konungyr, with Bear aspect and Heirolf's folly as well as Combat 1 & 2 retinue for seven wounds and seven attacks. He led six stands of Huscarls with a Skald and also had a Mountain Jotnar in his warband.
My second warband had a Blooded with Aspect of the Crow, Figurehead of the Naglfar, Marksmanship, Combat 1 and tactical 1 retinue for a Barrage seven commander in my four stands of Bow-Chosen with three stands of UGR in support.
Chris ran a Xhilliarch with five stands of Praetorian Guard with six Legionnaires in support
And a Strategos with three Kataphraktoi and six more Legionnaire stands in support
Andy's Spire List
Pheromancer With Flesh Retinue to level 3 and all sorts of Spire nastiness leading eight stands of Force Grown Drones with a Catabolic Node, supported by an Abomination
Pheromancer with Avatar Aspect and a few other bits and bobs, leading six Brute Drones supported by three stands of Force Grown Drones.
Lineage Highborne, pretty hard, leading five Avatara supported by three Centaur Avatara
Shooty High Clone Executor leading 3 stands of Marksman Clones supported by three stands of Force Grown Drones
Basic mimetic Assassin leading four stands of Vanguard Clones
TURN 1
We only saw one small unit of FG drone show up to face my Bow-Chosen with Blooded
TURN 2
For medium reserves, I did roll a pair of ones meaning my whole force was on bar the Jotnar, but he'd be on next turn.
I brought on my UGR's on the left, shuffled up my Bow-Chosen to allow my Huscarls to march towards the centre. Andy brought on his Big FG Drone unit on our right, facing Chris's Undead
Six Legionnaire stands v nine regenerating, decaying Force Grown Drones...
TURN 3
I marched my Huscarls onto the centre objective early in the round to try and draw Andy in
My UGR took the left zone
While Chris lost his rag with his mid left legionnaires who wouldn't sit evenly on the marshlands tufts...
Andy had his big block move up, with his Avatara supporting...
Last to activate was his Clone Marksmen who out ranged my Bow chosen
I lost a whole stand of my own missile troops
This really made me laugh, Chris's mutinous legionnaires simply wouldn't form up!!!
END OF TURN 3
NORDS/OLD DOMINION ALLIANCE 3 VP's
EVIL SPIRE 0 VP's
TURN 4
BOARD LEFT
BOARD RIGHT
I activated first, using the Bow Chosen and shooting up the Assassins Vanguard clones. Andy then wasted an activation with a character...
I then failed a 2+ charge into the unit with my UGR... Not what we needed!!!
I marched up the Huscarls to fully occupy the centre and use Andy's own numbers against him, blocking the Brutes from their charge. Andy was using characters to waste activations...
The valiant Huscarls fear no little Force Grown Drones
While my UGR's dawdled on the left, Chris's Legionnaires made a 5+ charge to smash into teh Pheromancer's big block...
They killed a paltry five and having sorted out some semblance of order, the other Legionnaires marched up alongside their brethren and Nord allies...
The UGR were charged by the Vanguard Clones
and the UGR were easily broken, but not quite destroyed...
That was before the Assassin attacked, but three wounds weren't enough to drop the last big guy...
The Force Grown block dropped two stands of Legionnaires in an impressive attack by Spire standards.
And after a sideways shuffle from the three FG Drones stands, the Brutes looked to charge the Huscarls
They could only get a few stands in and were asking for Legionnaires in the face next turn
I lost a stand of Huscarls to the Brute Drones
The Kataphraktoi reinforced our left, as it looked like my UGR were going down
As on the right, the Avatara flanked the Legionnaires...
wiping them out in one devastating charge!!!
All part of Chris's cunning plan as this time the Praetorians made a 5+ charge...
The Bow Chosen got charged by the Centaur Avatara, but only suffered impact hits. And always last to the party, the Abomination showed up to threaten the Kataphraktoi...
The Marksmen Clones targeted Little Boy Blue and stuck him for six wounds...
The right side of the battle field saw our forces clash
END OF TURN 4
NORDS/OLD DOMINION ALLIANCE 5 VP's
EVIL SPIRE 2 VP's
TURN 5
Andy got first activation, and his Centaur Avatara wiped out my Bow Chosen...
This allowed Chris to activate his Heavy cavalry to devastate the Vanguard Clones...
At least they would have if he'd not rolled 1 on the charge, even with the re-roll... he couldn't fail on the right, yet neither of us can roll above 2+ on the left!!!
The Praetorians were up next as Andy used characters to pass, cutting down two Avatara (Chris had played his supremacy power of Obdurate Bone and Stone, so all his units can attack twice this round )
The Mountain Jotnar was cut down by a hail of arrows
Having lost a brute from the Huscarls, the Konyngr challenged the Avatara Pheromancer and did three wounds, taking four himself sadly...
The Huscarls looked to be in trouble next turn with these guys in their flank
The Brute Drones hacked down another stand of Huscarls as the Legionnaires charge into them
and nearly dropped a second
The Abomination charged the Kataphrakatoi after the Vanguards finished off the UGR
I lost another two wounds from being shot with arcing fire from the Marksmen Clones, breaking them and denying them the ability to score from the objective.
And the large FG Drones cut down the Praetorians down by a stand
END OF TURN 5
NORDS/OLD DOMINION ALLIANCE 5 VP's
EVIL SPIRE 6 VP's
TURN 6
The Kataphraktoi activated first and scored three wounds on the Abomination
The Highborne Avatara cut down the Xhilliarch in a duel
The Brutes healed up again
as the Praetorians died slowly
My Konungyr finally killed the Avatara Pheromancer, but was badly wounded...
The small FG Drones charged in but didn't manage to finish off the Huscarls
The Kataphraktoi survived a charge by the Vanguard Clones
And this allowed the Strategos to challenge the Mimetic Assassin. (Not something I would ever advise)
But the Old Dominion warrior easily cut down the Spire assassin...
END OF TURN 6
NORDS/OLD DOMINION ALLIANCE 5 VP's
EVIL SPIRE 9 VP's
TURN 7
The Kataphraktoi lost another knight to the Abomination, my Huscarls (and contribution) were wiped out by shooting and the Centaurs Avatara moved up to take the centre
The remaining cavalry struck out at the Abomination...
Surprisingly killing the Monster!!! (this was first full unit our not so Grand Alliance had killed)
The Praetorians continued to die in dribs and drabs
The Brute Drones attacked the Legionnaires
Rolling rather well
By the end of the turn, the only Allied unit left was the Kataphraktoi, as they were attacked by the Vanguard Drones...
And Andy's dice were savage again. But the heavy armour was sufficient to sav all but one...
END OF TURN 7
NORDS/OLD DOMINION ALLIANCE 5 VP's
EVIL SPIRE 12 VP's
TURN 8
With only two wounds keeping them in the fight, the Kataphraktoi lashed out and killed a stand. And amazingly, they survived the attacks back to go into turn 9...
END OF TURN 8
NORDS/OLD DOMINION ALLIANCE 5 VP's
EVIL SPIRE 15 VP's
TURN 9
Still dragging the game out...
The rest of the battlefield was empty bar Spire forces
The amazing Kataphraktoi dropped another stand of Vangaurd Clones
Before finally succumbing to a return attack...
END OF TURN 9 (and Game)
NORDS/OLD DOMINION ALLIANCE 5 VP's
EVIL SPIRE 18 VP's
Not really to much to say about that, Andy's dice were pretty great throughout, I played pretty poorly and got slapped full stop while Chris and the Old Dominion couldn't cope with the healing ability on the right. Shocking charge dice on the left didn't but Andy seemed to get his card play going far better than Chris and i whose forces simply didn't gel. Still, Chris has 2500pts of W'adrhun and dinosaurs to play with so Andy will be in trouble soon...
