Greg popped over with his Lannisters as I tried out list 2 for The Old Gods and The New event at Leeds, with a themed list as Theon tries to re-establish his religious heritage and heavily populated with Drowned Men, Drowned Prophets and NCU's. Also had my newly painted Stony Shore pillagers, but didn't expect much of them in this list, as its not exactly tough. Still, in Winds of Winter, you never know with the mission cards.
House Harlaw Reapers with Theon Greyjoy - "Prince" of Winterfell (C)
Ironborn Bowmen
Ironborn Reavers with Drowned Prophet
Stony Shore Pillagers with Drowned Prophet
Drowned Men
Drowned Men
NCU's (The Drowned Priests)
Aeron Greyjoy & Beron Blacktyde
One of the stipulations of the event rules pack is you cannot duplicate units, characters, attachments and NCU's between list 1 and 2. So it's totally different to my other list.
Cheery Greg was running a punchy Lannister list led by the King himself, so I gave him a mug to match...
Kingsguard with Joffrey Baratheon - First of His Name (C)
Casterly Rock Honor Guard with Tyrion - The Giant of Lannister
Lannister Crossbowmen wuth Bronn - The Sellsword
House Clegane Brigands
NCU's
Pycelle, Shae & Qyburn
Enemy Attachment
Turncoat
SCENARIO: Winds of Winter
RANDOM TERRAIN: Hedge, Wood, Stake, Weirwood, Wall
Deployment
Lannisters: Honour Guard, Crossbows, Joffrey's Kingsguard, Brigands
Greyjoys: Drowned Men, Stony Shore Pillagers, Reavers, Drowned Men,
Bowmen, Harlaw Reapers with Theon
Not a great starting hand to be honest
The Turncoat was deployed in Theon's Harlaw Reaper unit. (Takes one to know one I suppose)
TURN 1
Greg elected to go first, with Pycelle on the letters, I had Beron takes bags to lose the token, Shae took the horses and moved up the Crossbows, so I took the Swords to deny any shooting. Qyburn took the crown and attacked my Reavers.
I failed the panic check, dropping two Reavers but my Drowned Men healed them up
BOARD at END OF TURN 1
The Lannisters moved up but I was more reticent and held back a bit, redeploying my left side Drowned Men
TURN 2
Going first I had to choose first mission, opting for scoring if opponent claims a zone first, while Greg had when an enemy claims Swords or Horses. I chose that card based on Greg having more NCU's and less units.
I activated my Ironborn Bowmen and caused 5 wounds on the Clegane Brigands
Greg had his Honour Guard move up to the centre objective, while I moved the Drowned Men further over from the left behind my Reavers
Greg moved his crossbows to get closer to me a bit as my forces were out of range to begin with.
I could have charged with the Stony shore Pillagers on a 3+ but decided to march past the Casterly Rock Honour Guards t give them something to think about next turn
Greg took the Bags to allow the crossbows to shoot from Bronn, scoring me a VP
I lost another two Reavers to the shooting, but the attack triggered Theon's "Sentinel" order
which with his extra movement allowed me to by pass the wall
and then activate and charge home. All seven attacks hit, but Greg made two saves, leaving the Brigands on two wounds. They passed the panic though.
Greg then used one of his pass tokens
which meant I felt obliged to influence Theon's Reapers with Blind Beron and crown zap the Brigands
Greg managed to scrape a pass to prevent the Brigands demise...
Greg activated the Brigands and retreated them away from the Reapers
I took the Letters before The Kingsguard charged the Reapers
With a Baratheon banner being played to give Critical Blow and Vicious, I lost 8 Harlaw Reapers. But I was in long range of the Reavers so played Diversion tactics with the aim of bringing the Reavers up into auto charge range
Alas, I was counter plotted..
Greg took the Swords with Shae, giving me a second VP
Allowing the Kingsguard to make a second attack on the Reapers
They scored six hits, but I save three and Blind Beron allowed me to block two..
But I was vulnerable and the rerolls meant despite "Hardened" I had lost the unit
Filled with grief at poor little Theon's early death, my Reavers charged into the Honour Guard
END OF TURN 2
HOUSE LANNISTER 1 VP (1 unit)
HOUSE GREYJOY 2 VP's (2 mission)
BOARD at END OF TURN 2
With the Harlaw Reapers gone, my right was weak and my centre Reavers exposed. Not good.
TURN 3
Greg chose whoever controls centre objective scores 2 VP's, whereas I opted to play score 1 VP for each engaged unit you out rank
Greg took the Swords with Pycelle, spending a token to give my Reavers weakened, plus a vulnerable. The Casterly rock Honour guard got plenty of bonuses (most usefully stopping abilities of the Drowned Prophet)and killed 7 Reavers. I had Beron take Bags to heal and remove the unused panic while influencing the Reavers and restoring three wounds
Qyburn had played a token choosing bags and crowns, so my Reavers and Pillagers both got Vulnerable tokens
Greg activated Joffrey and his Kingsguard to flank my Reavers, playing "You Will Obey Me" for +2 attacks.
All nine attacks hit home, with sundering and flank, I'd need sixes.
Woo hoo...
Sadly, the Vulnerable made me re-roll but eight wounds went down to seven with Blind Beron and with the Drowned Prophets Resilience order played, I only lost 3 and passed the panic.
I then used Raiding Call to beef up the Reavers from the Bowmen, before the Reavers used "Opportunist "for re-rolls and Precision against the unactivated Honour Guard
I didn't get any sixes and killed one model. Qyburn then took the Horses to retreat the Kingsguard out of melee to avoid flanking Bowmen shots
I lost more Reavers to the crossbows shooting but my Drowned Men moved up to support.
My Bowmen dropped two Kingsguard.
Damphair took the Crown but those pesky Welsh GT dice of Greg's again rolled exact same as last time as I attempted to finish of those Brigands
The Honour Guard activated, stopping abilities again...
And easily butchering the Iron Island Reavers...
BOARD at END OF TURN 3
Greg had been working out point scoring before attacking, as he didnt control the centre due to my Pillagers having charged in with three ranks (killing one Honour Guard), and I'd score from having more ranks
END OF TURN 3
HOUSE LANNISTER 2 VP's (2 units)
HOUSE GREYJOY 3 VP's (3 mission)
TURN 4
As I said, Greg had been doing the arithmetic but as I had first turn I played score a VP if opponent takes Swords or Horses, and Greg scored a point for having less VP's and took the first turn
I had already plinked a few Kingsguard, so Greg healed two with a banner and charged my Bowmen
Antagonising the boy King (Joffrey, not Greg) was a bad idea, as they swiftly despatched my bowmen, the remaining two from the assault succumbing to a failed panic
I took the Crown and the Brigands finally failed!!! BUT ONLY FOR ONE WOUND!!!
The Honour Guard healed from the bags. I took the letters for some extra cards and to weaken the Honour guard before Shae took the swords for another point for me and the crossbows shot into the Pillagers, but my armour was good and their shots poor.
The Pillagers attacked and dropped a rank of the Honour Guard
Before they turned around, stopped my abilities and cut me down to one rank!!!
END OF TURN 4
HOUSE LANNISTER 4 VP's (3 units, 1 mission)
HOUSE GREYJOY 4 VP's (4 mission)
TURN 5
Going first (again) I played score if opponent takes Sword or Letters while Greg played expend two tokens to score a point.
I played the Iron price to remove a weakened token from the Pillagers and also a Pillage token so healed 4 models, before Blind Beron influenced them and crown zapped the Brigands again...
And they finally died!!!
Greg took the bags and had Bronn's crossbows shift and shoot. I took Horses.
but swapped it out for We Do Not Sow and attacked the Honour Guard
I'd failed a charge last turn with the Drowned Men and exposed a flank to the Kingsguard. They charged in this but only did three wounds. We then did a few things before Greg noticed THE change I missed.
(While I generally approve of the CMON changes every six months, partially for the Social media outrage it generates by breaking "the META" , the problem I have is that I collect everything and cannot keep up with the changes, so I make mistakes). Anyway, the Drowned Men centrally died...
And the Kingsguard surged forth over to deal with the pesky roof burners, who had somehow been holding out against the Honour Guard.
The crossbows moved over ready to add their support.
Greg passed with his two NCU's, not wanting to gift me any more VP's. My remaining, far right Drowned Men had moved onto the right side objective
END OF TURN 5
HOUSE LANNISTER 5 VP's (4 units, 1 mission)
HOUSE GREYJOY 5 VP's (1 unit, 4 mission)
TURN 6
Greg played score 1 VP for objective controlled in enemy's half, I played score a VP for each objective controlled.
Greg had a swathe of options available, had totally battered me but I had a plan and thanks to the missions and the cards in hand, I was still very much in it
Pycelle on the swords was no surprise and I was very happy, assuming I could survive
Cancelling my abilities again, I lost five Pillagers. My turn, I tried a second Iron Price but it got counterplotted!!!
I had Beron take the Horses, influence the Pillagers and retreat, rolling a very nice 5 on the dice, taing me just out of crossbow range...
Greg had Shae take the Crown allowing the Kingsguard to march right up to my Stony Shore Pillagers. I opted to heal them further with Aeron Greyjoy
Greg spent another banner for critical blow and vicious and charged home
Nine hits, saw me make two saves and Blind Beron block one, meaning six brave Iron Islanders fell
The Drowned Prophet stood alone, facing a hefty panic check with a minus 4
(-3 card, -2 vicious, +1 pillage token). So base morale of 6, up to 10.
All praised the Drowned Dice God!!!
I didn't trust sneaky Lannisters, so played a What is Dead may never die card to heal 3 and then I retreated out of combat onto the left objective
With not tricks left to play, Greg passed on his remaining activations and the game ended, with me scoring form two flank objectives and Greg from the centre
END OF TURN 6 (and Game)
HOUSE LANNISTER 6 VP's (4 units, 2 mission)
HOUSE GREYJOY 7 VP's (1 unit, 6 mission)
Talk about stealing a victory!!! Greg totally kicked my ass but still lost. This was such a great game and really drives home how A Song of Ice and Fire, though promoted as a competitive game can still be fun and fluffy with the dearth or scenarios. Winds of Winter is not a good choice for tournaments in my opinion but is a really, swingy, random game. The Honour Guard were totally out of my forces class, and their ability to cut out my Drowned Prophet really hurt, but I managed to get the right cards turn 4 onwards to allow me to stay in the battle. The Kingsguard wiped out 3 of my foru destroyed units, and had a big hand in decimating the fourth, but I played the missions an Greg taking tactics zones gave me the win in effect, although the single point difference I'd put down to my perseverance in trying to panic the Brigands.😉 Always fun to play Greg, but I really didnt fancy my chances in a straight fight between our forces.
