Triple Dragon Double Bill: Targaryens face off against Lannisters and Baratheons

So with "I Pledge my Sword" coming up at the end of the month, and it being a 50pt 3 game event down at Battlefield Hobbies, I thought I'd dust off the old Dragon lists and get a few games in, managing two last week.

LIST ONE:

Unsullied Pikemen with Grey Worm (C)
Drogon Rhaegal Viserion Dothraki Hrakkars Dothraki Outriders NCU's
Pyat Pree, Illyrio Mopatis and Daenerys Targaryen

First up was Greg, with a balanced but nasty Gregor Clegane list, with plenty of sundering and The Mountains auto-wounding...

I gave Greg the choice of the two scenarios left after Ray had already selected one of the three modes at the event. He opted for

"Winds of Winter"

"Greggers" Gregor list

House Clegane Mountain's Men with Gregor Clegane (C) House Clegane Mountain's Men with Tyrion Lannister Lannister Halberdiers with Sandor Clegane Lannister Crossbowmen Knights of Casterly Rock Poor Fellows NCU's

Petyr Baelish, Lord Varys & Tycho Nestoris

RANDOM TERRAIN: Wood, Corpse pile, Corpse Pile, Stakes

LANNISTERS: Poor Fellows, Tyrion's MM, Knights,
Gregor's MM, Crossbows, Halberdiers

TARGARYENS: Viserion, Greyworm's Unsullied, Drogon, Rhaegal, Outriders
 (Hrakkar outflanking)

TURN 1

Greg took the Letters, weakening Drogon. I took the Swords and destroyed the Stakes. Greg marched up his Poor Fellows, so Daenerys took the House of Undying and Greg lost a Hear me Roar...

BOARD END OF TURN 1

We'd both moved up fairly aggressively, with good cover for units.

Tactics Board at End of Round 1

Pyat Pree discarded a second of Greg's cards, Subjugation of Power

TURN 2

Going first, I chose the Mission for this round. Greg copied me. Double points if choosing Swords or Horses

Daenerys took the Letters, weakening the Knights of Casterly Rock

Sandor had dished out a weakened to my Outriders

who passed a panic check from Baelish and then dropped a single Halberdier

The Crossbows dropped two wounds from Rhaegal

And after the Imp's Men moved up, Viserion charged them, rolling a 1 but being auto in

Oh, nearly a first charge disaster!!! But I dropped six Mountains Men

The Poor Fellows couldn't get into the Dragon, but Greg set his plan for next turn out very clearly

I didn't want to risk a Knights flank charge on Viserion (or anyone really), so Drogon hit the Knights, doing five wounds!!!

If Greg (Gregor) flanked Drogon and didnt finish him, he'd be exposed

But after much to do about nothing, Greg took the Swords, scoring me two points and played Assault Orders for Gregor to flank Drogon and simply wasted him without even needing  a panic check!!!  I was relived he didn't have Overrun mind...

Gregor fell back a bit, but left enough room for Greyworm's Unsullied to charge the Imp's unit of Mountain's Men

All eight attacks hit!!!

But they passed half their armour and morale check to hold me, allowing Gregor to activate and flank me!

The Unsullied proved a tougher match than the Dragon, as they had same ranks as the Mountains men so their Shieldwall order, and dropped two with counterstrike. Rhaegal then flanked the Mountains Men, killing four

The Lannister Kngihts then charged the Unsullied and while they dropped them to a rank, they lost four wound due to counterstrike and also the weakened token from earlier on...

I'd passed with Illyrio, and lost a card to Tycho on the House of Undying

The Centre was shaping into a real attritional bloodbath. Sandor's Halberdiers marched right up to the Outrider's on my right

END OF TURN 2

HOUSE TARGARYEN 2 VP's (2 Missions)

HOUSE LANNISTER 1 VP (Dead Dragon)

TURN 3

MISSION CARDS

Greg played 2 VP's if hold centre, I played score if opponent takes tactics zone before you

I brought on my Hrakkars far left near Tyrions flank/rear

Greg used Tycho on the Swords and also to heal two wounds on the Knights and three of Gregor's Men, who then  attacked Rhaegal. Despite Gregors two auto wounds, I only took a total of three, adding to two already taken from crossbows earlier, before the panic.

A Hear Me Roar panic check could have done for me, given the corpse pile and vicious

But Rhaegal only roared his defiance!!!

I played Battle Endurance on them and activated the Hrakkar, and rear ended Tyrion, wiping the Mountains Men out before surging forth in behind the Knights.

The Poor Fellows charged Viserion, and using a Faith token for re-rolls (as had been on corpse pile) and Precision, smacked the Dragon for four wounds!!!

Rhaegal activated and dropped the Mountain's unit to the big Man himself

This had weakened them too...

The Knights activated but didn't kill the unsullied in melee but the panic check did, healing another two Mountains men from Prey on Fear after two from Fealty to the Crown.

I had Daenerys take the bags, but Intrigue and Subterfuge stopped her doing a Dracarys attack. Still, she healed three wound on Rhaegal

The Halberdiers cut my Outriders down a rank.

Sudden Retreat dropped me back. Illyrio healed them. The Mountain and his Men activated and attacked Rhaegal, but the weakened proved pivotal and the dragon survived.
(In doing the write up, discovered The Mountains unit cannot become weakened!!!)

 Sorry Greg...

I activated my Outriders, who shot up the Mountain from the flank, dropping them to three.

They died from the resultant panic check, thanks to the corpse pile and flank shot

I lost an Overrun card from the House of Undying and  I'd healed with Illyrio

Tactics Board End of Turn 3

END OF TURN 3

HOUSE TARGARYEN 5 VP's (3 mission, 2 units)

HOUSE LANNISTER 2 VP's ( 2 units)

Board end of Turn 3

I'd retreated Viserion away from those nasty fanatics and was poised to wipe out the Knights. But I had a feeling Greg would take first turn away from me

TURN 4

Sure enough, Greg took first turn and an extra VP with his Mission card after I selected score two VP's if in enemy deployment zone unengaged

Going first, he activated his Knights and flanked Rhaegal, despite rolling a one on the charge

AND he only went and fluffed the attack. He got one hit. The Knights had a Lannsiter Always pays his Debts with token, but didn't control the crown so no +1 to hit.

Still, it does grant Vicious, he was in my flank and there is a corpse pile in range. Damn!!! Another Dragon down, and serves me right for being smug after his attack dice kerfuffle!!!

Along charge to his Knights with Viserion would leave me in front of those religious zealots if I failed, so I flew into the puny crossbowmen and ate six. A seventh ran away...

I healed Viserion with Illyrio after the remaining crossbowmen retreated.

I'd taken the good spots on the tactics board

Tempting though the crossbowmen were for my Hrakkar, Greg had shifted his Knights into my deployment zone so I had to match him with the Hrakkar. The Halberdiers and Outriders were both ineffectual in their melee

BOARD END OF TURN 4

END OF TURN 4

HOUSE TARGARYEN 7 VP's (2 Units, 5 Mission)

HOUSE LANNISTER 6 VP's (3 units, 3 mission)

TURN 5

Going first, I played score 1 VP for every objective you control. Greg matched me, so we'd score two VP's for every objective.

I activated Viserion, swooping in to the Crossbowmen but only killing 3 with the attacks. Fortunately, the Vicious flank attack panicked the last two chaps off...

I then played Overrrun, Greg countered with Counterplot... And rolled a two! Second one he failed, I might add...

I dropped five Halberdiers, but they passed their panic check despite the corpse pile nearby

Tycho on the Swords saw the Halberdiers attack

And wipe out my Outriders with help of Price of Failure!!!
Nice use of the card...

I played out the board as I desperately tried to cut down the Halberdiers but Intrigue and Subterfuge stopped a Dracarys attack again...

But they kept healing with Fuelled by slaughter and attacked Viserion

Viserion was mauled, with two wounds left...

Before my Hrakkar, having ran the length of the board piled in with his Battle endurance card giving him sundering, re-rolls and critical blow to add to his Vicious...

My White Lion roars louder than your Golden One!!!

But I hadn't taken the unit, or an objective and Greg didn't do anything risky ( a long bomb charge on Viserion was possible) and positioned onto two objective!!!

Board End of Turn 5

END OF TURN 5

HOUSE LANNISTER 11VP's (4 units, 7 objectives)

HOUSE TARGARYEN (3 units, 5 objectives)

TURN 6

I scored a point and took the first turn. Greg played if and enemy unit destroys a friendly one, places 2 VP's on the enemy.

I had Pyat Pree take the Swords

And in Turn 6, Battle Endurance gave me +2 attacks. I totally mauled the Sandor and his mate. I then surged forth 9"  onto a Corpse pile with Unstoppable advance, placing a weakened token on the Knights and trying to tempt the charge. My Hrakkar was worth 3 VP's now...

But Greg by-passed the Lion and went into the rear of Viserion, getting his third dragon and getting to the 12 VP mark...

I couldn't get into the Knights flank, so had to charge them. They were worth 3 VP's tome now, having killed Viserion. My seven dice yielded eight hits.

Thanks to the sundering, Greg failed four of them, enough to drop the unit that had never healed up...

We played out the remaining activations, and the game ended...

HOUSE TARGARYEN 13 VP's
(5 units, 8 Mission)

HOUSE LANNISTER 12 VP's
(5 units, 7 Mission)

Totally Awesome!!! So swingy, and I thought Greg had me with his stalwart Halberdiers and double points in Turn 5. With only the Poor Fellows and the Hrakkar left, it was a true bloodbath. The Mountains Men were ferocious hitting Dragons, and Greg's card play was pretty impressive, twice stopping Dracarys at crucial points (although he did fail Counterplot twice). Not sure Greg deserved to lose, but Winds of Winter is a very cool game mode in friendly games as it can swing with the cards as you saw. No doubt the Hrakkar with Battle Endurance was my Lion of the match...

GAME 2

"A DANCE WITH DRAGONS"

"MR RAY" popped up on Thursday, running his Jokin led Baratheons against my Marselen Targaryens.

Unsullied Swordmasters with Marselen - Mother's Men Commander (C) Drogon Rhaegal Viserion Stormcrow Mercenaries with Jorah Mormont - The Andal Stormcrow Mercenaries withBelwas - Veteran Pit-Fighter NCU's
Pyat Pree, Illyrio Mopatis & Daenerys The Unburnt

Ray wanted to try out some of his "new" attachments as well as his Halberdiers...
R'hllor Lightbringers with Jokin - Stormcrow Captain (C)
Baratheon Halberdiers with Ramsay Snow & Reek
King's Men with Bryen Farring - King's Squire
Stormcrow Dervishes with Rorge - The Mad Dog of Saltpans
R'hllor Faithful with The Widower - Stormcrow Captain NCU's
Axell Florent, Davos Seaworth & Cressen
Random Terrain: Wood, hedge, wall, palisade, woods

BARATHEONS: Dervishes, Faithful, Lightbringers,
Halberdiers and Kingsmen

TARGARYENS: Jorah's Stormcrows, Drogon, Viserion, Unsullied,
Rhaegal, Belwas Stormcrows

TURN 1

I elected to go first, playing Blood of the Dragon on my Swordmasters

Ray took Horses, before Daenerys took the letters, Ray took House of Undying and I lost a card before I took Swords but swapped for Ray losing a card,  I took bags to remove Axel panic token after I passed the Cressen crown panic...

We moved up en masse, with my dragons swinging left!!!

TURN 2

As usual, I had a rush of blood and Viserion swooped into the Dervishes, killing five

Ray took the swords and the Dervishes attacked back, then retreated. I healed Viserion with bags, Axel took a card of me again, I took the letters before Cressen took crown and panic attacked my Stormcrows

The Board early Turn 2.

Ray was a bit miffed he'd forgotten Overwatch when Viserion moved up...

Jorah's Stormcrows moved up and took the left objective, with Viserion protecting their flank.

The Dervishes charged Viserion and cut him down to two remaining wounds, before their Swiftstrike saw them retreating away. With the R'hllor Faithful ready for a charge, I used Illyrio on Horses to retreat Viserion away rather than heal with a token

The move allowed me to avoid being charged by the Faithful.

Jokin's Lightbringers fired on my Unsullied after playing Brothers in Arms.10 dice Raymond said!!!
(A day later we realised the error, can only be played on Stormcrow units)

Besides, I saved five of the seven hits!!!

And then failed the panic, losing a further 3!!! And the

No defence against Snake Eyes!!!

I charge my Swordmasters into the Kingsmen, playing Devastating Impact!!!

It wasn't...

Ramsey's Halberdiers then charged me...

killing five and forcing a panic check with token on me!!!

I passed my first one, then showed off with the second!!!

Not liking 10 shots a turn, Drogon swooped in on the Lightbringersbut his free move triggered Overwatch!!!

Six hits caused six wounds on my Dragon,  but they lost the card when they failed their panic check, killing six all in

Rhaegal dropped four Kingsmen but I'd failed a panic on the Stormcrows on the left, dropping the objective. Belwas did pick the right one up though

END OF TURN 2

TARGARYENS 1 VP (1 objective)

BARATHEONS 0 VP

My Swordmasters had four wounds left...

Drogon has two wounds left

And Viserion had two wounds left

Being  friendly game, I thought Cressen would use his Sacrifice for the King, to take Swords and hit Swordsmasters before Ray went first...

TURN 3

But Ray decided against it and activated his Dervishes to hit Viserions flank

He managed five hits in my flank but had charged out of the Woods. I made four of the five saves, leaving me on one wound as the Dragon passed the panic!!!

I was lucky there, and start of my Turn played Supply Aid to remove 3 Stormcrows and heal four wounds on Viserion

I then took the bags and healed three wounds on Drogon

Axell on the Swords saw the Dervishes put three wounds back on Viserion

Before I used my second Supply aid from Belwas's unit to get four Unsullied back..

Daenerys took the Horses but swapped out for a Dracarys attack

Drogon on the Lighbringers saw them eaten with a failed panic

No middle ground on my saves from Final Strike!!! Drogon back on three wounds left

Drogon had surged forth out of the R'hllor Faithful arc, so Illyrio swapped his zone and spent a token to heal

And had the Swordmasters heal three more and weakened the Halberdiers

They attacked and cut down the Kingsmen to a single rank

Scoring three auto wounds and five hits!!!

They attacked back with the Sustained Assault tactics card and dropped five Unsullied in return

Rhaegal attacked but didnt finish off the Kingsmen!!! The Halberdiers were flanked by Belwas and his Stormcrows after they ineffectually attacked the Unsullied

Jorah and his Stormcrows assisted Viserion, charging the Dervishes and dropping them  a man

Viserion then activated, attacking and wiping them out but the Dervishes lashed out with a Final Strike and cut down my Dragon

The R'hllor had turned to face Drogon, but he flew off and secured the centre objective

END OF TURN 3

TARGARYENS 6 VP's (2 units, 4 objectives)

BARATHEONS 1 VP (Viserion)

TURN 4

Ray had Cressen stay on and take the Swords

With  Bryen's Farthings True Conviction and the Kignsmen's Kings Blade, they cut down Marselen and the Unsullied as I failed all five hits.

My revenge was sweet though, as Daenerys on bags used Dracarys

Rhaegal wiped out the Kingsmen and Overran into the Halberdiers flank

Five Halberdiers remained

I then whiffed with Belwas's attacks, not causing any wounds and the Halberdiers healed from Baratheon conviction

The Halberdiers then activated, attacking Rhaegal and cutting him down

The Faithful headed over towards Jorah's Stormcrows while Drogon failed a charge to get into the Halberdiers. And the Stormcrows failed a panic and gave the Halberdiers the objective.

END OF TURN 4

TARGARYENS 6 VP's (3 units, 6 objectives)

BARATHEONS 1 VP (3 units, 1 objective)

TURN 5

Taking the Swords, the Halberdiers cut down Belwas and his Stormcrows

A good offence is the best defence!!!

Yeah, that's works for me...

A crown zap saw my Stormcrows drop the objective, so they activated and legged it. But they were caught and killed by the R'hllor Faithful

The tactics board end of  Turn 5

Ramsay wouldnt die, but he dropped his objective!!!

END OF TURN 5

TARGARYENS 10 VP's (3 units, 7 objectives)

BARATHEONS 7 VP (5 units, 2 objectives)

TURN 6

I took the swords and killed Ramsey.

Ray's last unit was the other side of the table burning my captured Stormcrows...

END OF GAME

TARGARYEN 12 VP's(4 units, 8 objectives)

BARATHEONS 9 VP's (5 units, 4 objectives)

Wow, a second incredibly close game, again with only one unit surviving apiece. Jokin error aside, Ray was really unlucky not to have me capitulate in Turn 3 when Viserion survived a flank attack by the scale of his teeth. Still think Cressen sacrifice would have been worth it, but he did work start of turn 4 to finish of the Unsullied. The Halberdiers did sterling work though, as the game swung this way and that. Getting three objectives in one round helped me get ahead and I managed to cut my way through the Baratheons but it was a close run thing and Ray certainly didn't let my Dragons survival in Turn 3 deter him, with some good quality card play...
