Ste, Matt and I represented the Wardens of the North-West at the fourth Welsh GT, Ste running his usual Starks, Matt Greyjoy's and myself with Free Folk. A longer than expected five hour drive saw Ste and I chill out at DUKES GAMING with Steve Butler, and food afterwards where we met a few other gamers...
Six games were live streamed on YECATS MINIATURES
My lists were both 10 activations strong.
NEXT EVENT FOR ME (AND A FEW OTHER WARDENS) IS THIS WEE ONE

ETHAN "EBJ7" JEFFRIES
GREYJOYS
A DANCE WITH DRAGONS
Iron Victory Crew with Victarion Greyjoy - The Iron Captain (C)
Stony Shore Pillagers
Ironmakers with Dagmer Cleftjaw
Golden Company Crossbowmen with Nute - The Barber
NCU's
Balon Greyjoy, Aeron Greyjoy & Erik Ironmaker
Not met or played Ethan before, but he was a sound opponent, his
list was quite balanced, he was nice and chilled,
we had no issues and as you will see, we had a cracking game.
I elected to run Rattleshirt list Ethan was all infantry...
RANDOM TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT
Terrain: Wall, Palisade,Woods
We kept the objective cards face down until claimed
GREYJOYS: Pillagers, Ironmakers, GC Crossbows, Victarions Iron Victory Crew
FREEFOLK: Borroq Raiders, Boar, Varamyr behind, Bonelords Chosen, Followers,
Raiders, Spearwives outflanking with Shadowcat.
I elected to go first, to bring Spearwives and Shadowcat on Round 2. Ethan had spread out, so I planned to cave in his Stony Shore Pillagers on my left and swing to the centre, avoiding Victarion who was heading down my right.
ROUND 1
I took the Letters, weakening the Crossbows and had a nice spread of cards.
Ethan took the bags to remove the weakened, I had Val take the Horses to deny it and advanced up Borroq's unit before I passed a Crown panic.
Board End of Round 1
I had slowed in the middle and moved away from the right, but advanced up the left to aid the imminent reinforcements there
ROUND 2
Reinforcements!!!
Ethan had Damphair take the Horses, before I took the Swords to throw spears and charge home with the Spearwives
I dropped three Greyjoys, disappointingly...
Ethan used the Krakens Wrath before attacking back, gaining re-rolls and Precision
The Shadowcat went into the Pillagers flank, but Ethan used his order and ability to heal up
Varamyr moved up to threaten the centre
Victarion took the objective on my right, so would be reduced to 2" and I sat my Raiders in a wood to keep him honest...
My Spearwives then activated and attacked...
Getting one measly hit which was saved...
Ethan backed off in the centre, so Borroq took the left objective then sent
his Boar over to pick up the centre objective...
END OF ROUND 2
FREE FOLK 2 VP's (2 objectives)
GREYJOY 1 VP (1 objective)
ROUND 3
Activating first, I had Val tae the swords and my Spearwives attacked the
Pillagers, again rolling poorly.
The GC Crossbowmen activated, shooting and killing Borroqs Boar,
before I had Craster take the Bags to heal my Spearwives
The Ironmakers activated and took the centre objective
The Spearwives attacked again, killing two Pillagers but they used their
order to heal two
This allowed the GC to move using their Sentinel order, but this allowed me charge in Varamyr, killing one...
The Pillagers lost more men to the Shadowcat than the Spearwives due to a failed panic,
before the Bonelords Chosen flanked the Ironmakers and dropped them a rank and claiming the objective.
The Pillagers activated and attacked the Spearwives, and Ethan managed to match my own inadequate dice rolls
They would have missed without the Shadowcat's disrupt to be fair...
END OF ROUND 3
FREE FOLK 4 VP's (4 objectives)
GREYJOYS 2 VP's (2 objectives)
BOARD AT END OF ROUND 3
ROUND 4
Damphair took the Swords and got the Ironmakers to attack the Followers of Bone,
passing the Horrific visage test.
Four died but I played Regroup and Reform start of my turn to heal them up from the Raiders
I took the bags to heal up and deny Ethan the opportunity
Ethan activated the Ironmakers, attacking my Bonelords Chosen this time
Ethan lost two to a failed panic for Horrific Visage, and killed two but I passed my panic
I activated my Bonelords Chosen, who were hitting on 3+ due to "Weapon Trophies"
Aaaargh!!! Still, the one hit wounded, and with Theres Too Many, the Ironmakers needed a double six to pass morale which they failed with a 3 on the D3, plus 1 extra for Intimidating Presence
The Golden Company crossbows attacked Varamyr in melee, using We Do Not Sow causing a wound.
And needing a 4+, I rolled a 3 on two D6 and the D3. Varamyr died...
My Followers of Bone activated and attacked with Overwhelming Assault
And in a rare display of good dice, I killed the Ironmakers
Ethan played What is Dead May Never Die, failed the panic but played a second What is dead to stay in the game, activating and healing as he attacked
END OF ROUND 4
FREEFOLK 6 VP's (6 objectives)
GREYJOYS 4 VP's (1 unit, 3 objectives)
ROUND 5
I took the Swords, and had the Bonelords chosen attack, finally cutting down the Ironmakers. But this allowed the GC to charge the Bonelord, losing two to Horrific Visage but cutting down six of the Chosen
Having taken the horses end of last turn, Victarion was now 7.9" away from the Followers flank, activating and played rush of Aggression. Aaaargh again, but perfectly played by Ethan
The Iron Victory crew had more ranks than the Followers, automatically passing any panic and making Horrific Visage and Intimidating presence useless. My Followers were butchered, leaving Ethan a 3+ Overrun into the Chosen, whom they also outranked!!!
And Rattleshirt and his men were butchered, the game had turned dramatically!!!
Shadowcat died to Precision attacks from the Pillagers
And the Ironmakers returned with from Balon!!! They hammered Borroq's raiders and took the third objective. I did get a Freefolk Endless horde card out earlier in the round, hence the new unit.
Too late to matter, the Spearwives finally got their sh*t together!!!
But Ethan had played a blinder, and the Greyjoys secured the battlefield...
END OF ROUND 5 (& Game)
GREYJOYS 10 VP's (4 units, 6 objectives)
FREEFOLK 7 VP's (1 unit, 6 objectives)
That was a great game, I had good board control and had the centre and left in hand and Victarion out of it. But the Spearwives failed miserably when attacking, and the Ironmakers were too tough to crack quickly. The double use of What May Dead gave Ethan teh time to get Victarion rolling and damn, did he roll right through me. Ethan was a pleasure to play, held out well and ran out a well deserved winner!!!
GAME 2
MATT "BERG1488 " BERG
GREYJOYS
HONED & READY
Ironmakers with Victarion Greyjoy - The Iron Captain (C)
Iron Victory Crew with Nute - The Barber
Blacktyde Chosen
Ironmakers
NCU's
Balon Greyjoy, Beron Blacktyde & Petyr Baelish
A fellow Warden of the North-West, Matt had been beaten by Ste game 1 so ended
up playing me. Usually a Stark player, he had switched to Greyjoys
and was also running Victarion. I elected to stick with Rattleshirt,
as I thought I had played well Game 1, despite the defeat...
RANDOM TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT
TERRAIN: Corpse pile, Bog, Wood, Weir Wood, Hedge
GREYJOYS: Iron Victory Crew, Vic's Ironmakers, Blacktyde Chosen, Ironmakers
FREEFOLK: Raiders, Varamyr, Followers, Bonelord's Chosen,
Boar, Borroq's Raiders
(Shadowcat and Spearwives on outflank)
ROUND 1
I took the first turn, taking the Letters and making the right side Ironmakers vulnerable
Again, a good spread of cards...
I activated the Followers of Bone to advance up the centre
Matt had taken the bags and the crown (I lost two Raiders on my left) so I took the Horses for a free maneuver with Borroq's Raiders.
Matt had marched up where I had been a bit more coy, except on the far wings, with both Raiders moving as far as possible
BOARD END OF ROUND 1
ROUND 2
With Matt going first, I brought on both my flanking units on my far right
Matt took the Letters, weakening the Spearwives. I had Craster take the Swords, threw spearsat the Ironmakers, scoring one hit which Matt saved, then charged in...
Five hits went to ZERO as Matt's weakened worked a treat...
Victarion's Ironmakers charged the Followers of Bone and lost three men due to Horrific Visage
They hit hard though, and used the Panic token to good effect dropping nine Followers overall. I used Diversion tactics to bring up Rattleshirts Chosen
I activated and charged into the flank of the Ironmakers, using overwhelming assault for Sundering and Critical Blow
Six Ironmakers fell, giving me some Trophy cards...
They healed off the bags, but I hit them in the flank with Varamyr and they dropped three again...
And then it all went wrong!!! Matt played Fingerdance on the Ironmakers engaged with the Spearwives and took two wounds for re-rolls and to make them Vulnerable. Activating and attackign with critical blow saw nine hits, two saved but failed the re-rolls. I then failed the panic and rolled a 3 on the D3!!! One shotted with a vanilla unit. Matt was pretty happy
I attacked with the Followers of Bone, but they bounced off the armour...
Matt had the Blacktyde Chosen charged the Bonelords rear but dropped a full rank from the horrific Visage
I lost three men, and used Co-ordination tactics to hit Nute's Iron Victory crew after tehy Raiding Call healed Vic's Ironmakers when they charged in to the Bonelords flank, trying to reduce his charge...
Not outnumbering me, they lost more men to a Horrific visage failure.
And Matt didn't roll well, as I took no wounds!!!
As the Bonelord was taking on all comers, Shadowcat, Borroq's Raiders and his Boar all managed to cut down some Ironmakers and contest the objective there. My Raiders took the near left
BOARD END OF ROUND 2
TACTICS BOARD END OF ROUND 2
GREYJOYS 1 VP (1 unit)
FREE FOLK 1 VP (1 objective)
I took the Swords and had the Bonelords Chosen attack, with Weapons trophies meaning seven dice hitting on a 2+
Still managed 3 ones...
Still, Prey on Fear recouped my wounds and Victarion was left alone...
Blind Beron took a zone and We Do Not sow saw the Followers of Bone die. Matt didnt want to activate Victarion as he couldnt come back unactivated with Balon's trick. I attacked on the right after bringing back my Endless Horde Raiders there too. Those Ironmakers were a tough nut and all my attacks managed to kill 3 in total...
Victarion finally activated, but didnt do anything much...
I was holding on and would march my Raiders up onto that objective
The Blacktyde Chosen lost four more to Horrific Visage and Intimidating Presence
And using Val, I rolled well for Varamyr's retreat...
Killing Victarion would be nice, but the centre was contested, and I could snatch the far objective.
Nute's Iron Crew cut my Chosen down to a single rank...
With a bad panic helping!!!
BOARD END OF ROUND 3
My left side unit was badly shot from the wall, as was my right but I did score from three objectives
 |
END OF ROUND 3 |
GREYJOYS 2 VP's (2 units)
FREEFOLK 4 VP's (4 objectives)
ROUND 4
Nute's Iron Victory crew finished off Rattleshirt and his Chosen by attacking form the Swords, surging forth towards Varamyr. I healed my raiders off of the bags, but Rush of Aggression allowed Nute and his shipmates to butcher the Bear rider!!!
I did manage to get the far right Ironmakers down to one man
But I had the Bags, and so they healed when they attacked with We Do Not Sow
I lost the Shadowcat to that attack, and dropped them down to one man again with Borroq swapping out in for a Raid Leader in a Regroup and Reform to get more attacks against them.
I then lost the Board as the Ironmakers activated, while the Blacktyde Chosen flanked my Raiders. Victarion single handedly took the centre of the field...
Board End of Round 4
END OF ROUND 4
GREYJOYS 6 VP's (4 units, 2 objectives)
FREEFOLK 6 VP's (6 objectives)
ROUND 5
I took the Swords, but failed to kill the last Ironmaker. Matt healed them up, so I healed up Borroq's Raiders
I lost my left Raiders to an attack off the wall.
But they had Endless Horde on them so a unit came straight back on
The Blacktyde Chosen wiped out my Raiders and a shot from the wall almost did for the Ironmakers, killing three. But it wasnt enough
END OF ROUND 5 (and Game)
GREYJOYS 11 VP's (6 units, 5 objectives)
FREEFOLK 8 VP's (8 objectives)
Another game where I felt I didn't do a lot wrong, but the demise of the Spearwives to one attack was simply devastating to me. And a thoroughly enjoyable battle again, despite another defeat. The inability to finish off another pesky unit of Ironmakers was annoying, but so too were my casualties off of the wall at end of rounds. Matt played very well, and was annoyed that I didn't try and kill Victarion so he could use Balon. But he didn't need to, game was his when my Bonelords Chosen fell in round 4.
GAME 3
NATHAN "GODWOLLEN" MUTLOW
STARKS
A FEAST FOR CROWS
House Umber Berserkers with Greatjon Umber(C)
House Umber Berserkers with Rickard Karstark
House Tully Cavaliers
Stark Bowmen
NCU's
Catelyn Stark, Jaqen H'ghar & Arya Stark
Nathan is a cheery fellow, first time playing him and a local boyo from Dukes Gaming
(Duke's Aces) He's not been playing the game too long and said he'd learn what Mance and,
and the units did as we went along. I had elected to run Mance as I just needed a change.
RANDOM TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT
TERRAIN: Palisade, Wall, Weir Wood
We kept the objectives blind again.
STARKS: Greatjons Berserkers, Tully Cavaliers, Bowmen, Berserkers
FREEFOLK: Boar, Borroq's Raiders, Spear Thrower, Varamyr,
Mance's Spearwives, Raiders
(Shadowcat and Spearwives outflanking)
ROUND 1
I elected to go first, taking the Letters
Another good tactics card spread, and I'd be using The Long Plan end of round for sure for Wildling Diplomacy
Nathan took the horses to move the Greatjon toward the left objective and I took the swords to deny the Bowmen any shooting and moved up my right side Raiders
Nathan spent both his Arya tokens this round, for no real advantage I could see other than to simply get close to me. I played cagey, redeploying Borroq more central and keeping the boar there to ensure Greatjon objective sat while edging up on the right. A six plus charge from the Tully Cavaliers at Mance had my heart in my mouth but it was well short (thankfully)
I was able to get a charge into the Tully's flank with Varamyr, as the Berserkers on the right sped onto the objective there but in passing the panic they healed the wound I caused
BOARD END OF ROUND 1
Tactics Board End of Round 1
ROUND 2
My reinforcements arrived again...
And I nominated Catelyn and the Longbows for Predictable Maneuvers
Nathan wasn't bothered, he charged over corpse pile to attack my right raiders, although Mance used Counter-strategy to deny Devastating Impact
I still lost seven Raider
I took the Swords with Val and spear tossed and charged the Stark bowmen.
Finally, they stepped up!!! Ok, Nathan rolled really poorly on his panic checks, losing five from that
Nathan then elected to take the Letters, despite me playing Wildling Diplomacy. This killed the Stark bowmen
I use Craster on the bags to heal up my Raiders...
I healed two, drawing a card which went straight down onto the raiders next turn
Nathan took the Horses and retreated the Cavalier out of melee with Varamyr
But I activated my Jarl's Spearwives, simply charging in to engage them (I had played Surronded and Exposed too)
Mance's Spearwives shifted back 2" then also charged them after spear throwing...
The spear throw and failed panic dropped them to a single rank
And then five hits, some bad rolls on armour (with vulnerable help) dropped the lot...
Shadowcat went into the rear of the Umbers to disrupt their attacks. But the Greatjon charged off of the corpse pile into the Boar, and completely whiffed his attacks, causing only two wounds (and I healed one when I attacked back), after Borroq and his Raiders flanked and absolutely nailed them!!! I marched the Giant centrally as didnt want to shoot into combat (yet)
BOARD END OF ROUND 2
END OF ROUND 2
FREEFOLK 2 VP's (2 units)
STARKS 1 VP (1 objective)
ROUND 3
I played Regroup and Reform on my Spearwives and Raiders, before I took the swords, spear tossed and charged in, wiping the Berserkers out
The Greatjon struck and killed few Raiders, which I healed off of the bags. I then spread my army onto objectives before using Overwhelming Assault for rerolls and vicious and cut down the last of the Starks!!!
Nathan did drop eight Raiders with Last Stand as the Greatjon fell
END OF ROUND 3 (and Game)
FREEFOLK 7 VP's (4 units, 3 objectives)
STARKS 1 VP (1 objective)
I also claimed the spot prize by killing a unit and then claiming the objective from their corpse pile!!!
Baelish's Blade...
Nathan simply played like an Umber Berserker, charging straight in and he was
unable to counter my outflankers. I was able to take him apart piecemeal,
and he did have some shocking dice. I also did manage to save five hits on the Boar,
which was nice. That was a tough list but when he came at me, I thought he had
some good cards in hand. Thankfully, he didnt and I got the win...
GAME 4
DAN "WULFYN" HOLLAND
BARATHEONS
FIRE & BLOOD
Stag Knights with Axell Florent - First of the Queen's Men (C)
R'hllor Faithful with Andrew Estermont
R'hllor Lightbringers
R'hllor Lightbringers
Baratheon Wardens
NCU's
Melisandre & Davos Seaworth
I stuck with the Mance list for this game. I'd chatted to Dan the night
before at the pub, and have to say, both his Baratheon list were ones
I'd rather avoid. He elected to corner camp, but I wasn't just gonna sit back..
RANDOM TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT
TERRAIN: Wall and Weirwood all that mattered in the board half we played
BARATHEONS: 2 x Lighbringers at rear, Faithful, Stag Knights, Wardens along front
FREEFOLK: Varamyr, Raiders, Mance's Spearwives, Borroqs Raiders, Boar,
Spear thrower (Shadowcat and Spearwives outflanking)
Half a board would be played on. And it wasn't until round 3 it suddenly dawned on me I
could have set up 18"on rather than 10". (it was game 4, and I was tired). I marked the right Lightbringers and the Wardens, Dan marked the left side Raiders and the off board Spearwives (which apparently you can't do?)
ROUND 1
I elected to go first, taking the Letters and weakening the right hand Lighbringers. Dan took the bags to remove it, so I took the Swords and swapped to a move for Borroqs Raiders
Nice card hand again
Dan moved a wee bit but not a lot
The Free Folk close in.
BOARD END OF ROUND 1
ROUND 2
The Shadowcat snuck in behind the Lightbringers while the Spearwives
fronted up against the Wardens
I played Predictable Maneuvers to stop the Wardens activating and Melisandre
Think Dan used a pass token, so I took the Swords and had the Spearwives throw spears to no effect before charging home
Four hits resulted in 3 dead Wardens, though I took a wound from counterstrike
I played both Wildling Diplomacy cards, to stop Mel but Dan took the bags to heal the Wardens. To no avail as I killed 3 with Wildling Diplomacy
Shadowcat killed a Lightbringer but more importantly, kept them engaged. In melee, the lightbringers needed a 6+ to hit and failed
The Wardens dropped a pair of Spearwives on their activation as my forces queued up, using Surrounded and Exposed to give tokens to the Wardens.
And then the Spearwives fluffed their attack on activation as had been the norm for the day
With counterstrike from the Wardens, I lost 3 more Spearwives
Varamyr had swung out left, Dan's unengaged Lightbringers had turned to face Shadowcat as the R'hllor Faithful and Stag Knights readied themselves
BOARD END OF ROUND 2
After giving the Spearwives an Endless Horde card, I took the Swords with Val, attacking with the Spearwives again
I killed two but lost 3 of my own
Melisandre healed the Wardens and panicked my Spearwives after sacrificing a few unengaged Lightbringers
But I passed the Mel bomb attack
The Shadowcat killed two Lightbringers and they lost three more to panic
The Wardens dropped my Spearwives to two models, but the attack allowed me to use Diversion tactics and move the Raiders left
This allowed me to charge the Rhllor Faithful, cutting down four of their number
The Raiders in return lost six men when the Faithful attacked back, before Varamyr flanked them. To no effect as they healed up with Baratheon conviction. Shadowcat was shot down while Mance's unit dropped two Stag Knights charging over the wall at them...
ROUND 4
Melisandre took the swords
This allowed the panic check to cut down the Raiders
which allowed me to bring back Raiders with Endless Horde
and then the actual attack from the Wardens killed the Spearwives
which triggered a second Endless Horde
I played a second Surrounded and Exposed on the Wardens
Varamyr cut another rank down of off the R'hllor Faithful
And took two wounds from the Lightbringers shooting
Tactics Board
The Baratheons were being thinned, with the Boar cutting down Wardens and the Giant dropped some with shooting
The Baratheons were dropping, but I'd already lost three units by this stage
BOARD AT END OF ROUND 4
END OF ROUND 4
BARATHEONS 6 VP's (2 units)
FREEFOLK 0 VP's
ROUND 5
I took the Swords and had Varamyr attack the Faithul. I disappointingly only scored two hits.
Five attacks, only two hit but both wounded and they failed the panic check and died
The Wardens killed the Boar
But then died when the Giant shot them
This pulled the game back a bit but then the Stag Knights activated, with Dan playing Fiery Resolve and forcing a panic check before the attack.
And Mance on his 5+ base fluffed it!!! The follow up attack destroyed the unit...
BOARD AT END OF TURN 5 (& GAME)
BARARTHEONS 11 VP's
FREEFOLK 5 VP's
Not setting up 18" on didn't really make much difference, a sit came down toa battle of attrition and in that the Baratheon infantry always had the upper hand with better armour. Dan was real fun to play against, and I gave it a good go but again, my dice really let me down. To cap it all off, Dan then went and kidnapped Lady VAl (accidentally putting her with his units). No real issue, when i noticed she was missing teh following day, and wasn't on the floor near the table, reasoned what had happened. Alas, Dan got ill after eating out and didn't make it the next day, so more woe to the Freefolk. Last I heard she is making her way North again...
INTERMISSION
In case the Ravens haven't reached you, this is on at the end of March and there'll be a few live streams taking place over the weekend.
An Indian buffet and a midnight stop out at Wetherspoons was the Saturday evening, which was, as always, a really good laugh. The social side of the two day events is a real selling point...
DAY 2
GAME 5
CONNOR "SQUIGY666" BROWN
Brotherhood without Banners
A CLASH OF KINGS
Brotherhood Archers with Catelyn Stark - Lady Stoneheart (C)
Riders of Highgarden
Peasant Levy with Tom Sevenstringers
Brotherhood Sworn Knights
Brotherhood Sworn Knights
NCU'S
Thoros of Myr & The Ghost of High Heart
Connor is one of the Wardens of the South, and I had spent the evening sat next to
him at the Indian buffet, chatting away. I have been running BwB and figured this
was the list he'd take, as cavalry are the bane of Freefolk.
TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT
TERRAIN: Wall, Corpse pile, Weir Wood, Stakes
BROTHERHOOD: Sworn Knights, Archers, Peasants, Riders of Highgarden,
Sworn Knights
FREEFOLK: Boar, Borroq, Varamyr, Giant Spear Thrower, Mance Spearwives, Raiders
(Start of round 1 I deployed the outflank spearwives, Shadowcat in outflank)
ROUND 1
Connor has the Hag take the Letters, so I took the swords and destroyed the stakes
Starting hand was not too bad
I advanced upon the left, after the archers had moved off the Horses and were out of range. But I had forgotten their Deceitful Reposition, and lost 3 Raiders, plus four from the panic fail.
I healed two with Craster to draw another card too. The Brotherhood had split
with cavalry on both flanks and the Riders of Highgarden moved centrally.
BOARD AT END OF ROUND 1
ROUND 2
Shadowcat deployed behind the right Sworn Knights. I then had Craster take the bags, and the Spearwives launched their spears
Five wounds resulted overall after the charge home. I then played
Predictable Maneuvers to prevent them retreating or attacking.
Connor decided to activate Thoros (who had two additional tokens) but I played Wildling Diplomacy. As a result, he declined to activate.
I activated Mance and had him spear toss and then charge in, although I lost two Spearwives from a failed panic. The Sworn Knight was left on one wound
I'd have had him too if I hadn't forgotten to use the Sundering card...
I also went for a charge with Borroq's Raiders and made it into the left side Knights, although the Board did the real damage, dropping three...
My substitute Lady Val had changed the crown out to move up the Raiders
Shadowcat went for a 3+ charge to pin the Riders in place but failed
The Sworn Knights Took up the Sword on activation, healing two and attacked the Spearwives but I healed up the damage with Regroup and Reform, putting the raid Leader as well.
I attacked back, with seven dice on 3+. And I got three hits, which were all saved
So I sent Varamyr in, and with his four attacks he managed a wound, and took a wound from a failed panic. So he dropped back to one wound.
I tried to Counter Strategy Lash Out, but failed so Varamyr took two wounds
The left side Sworn Knights cut down Borroqs Raiders with Critical blow attacks and another failed panic
This wasn't going to end well. It didn't as the archers shooting in the rear was a bit overkill.
The Archers then moved 3" with their Deceitful Reposition as the Peasants took the centre
Then the Highgarden Riders charged in to Mance's flank, playing the Price of Failure so I took nine hits
All of which went through my thin furs...
But at least I did pass the panic check!!!
BOARD AT END OF ROUND 2
My left side had collapsed, and I was under real pressure on the right and had nothing to contest the centre
END OF ROUND 2
BROTHERHOOD 3 VP's (1 unit, 2 objectives)
FREEFOLK 0 VP's
ROUND 3
The Old Hag took the Swords, despite me playing Wildling Diplomacy
This allowed me to kill the right side Sworn Knight, before the Archers shot into Mance with Lady Stoneheart's unit killing my leader for extra points
I activated Varanyr, who flanked the Highgarden Riders and dropped rank, allowing Connor to play Vengeance in Blood to allow the Archers to shoot again. Nice...
Then Connor got to activate the Riders, taking up the Sword to heal up two wounds. However, they failed to wipe out the Raiders.
I played Diversion tactics to maneuver up the Spearwives, who activated, shifted into the rear, tossed spears and charged
Connor healed the Riders as I played Endless Horde and attacked with my Raiders
And they managed to wipe them out, thanks to a failed panic check!!!
Shadowcat flanked the Archers, to try and stop them from cutting me to bits...
My Giant charged into the Peasants on the centre, killing four
END OF ROUND 3
BROTHERHOOD 8 VP's (4 units, 4 objectives)
FREEFOLK 3 VP's (2units, 1 objective)
ROUND 4
I had Craster take the Swords and the Giant killed two peasants

e
Connor was a bit shaken and was concerned I could pull this around. I wasn't convinced, especially when he brought his Knights forward off of the objective.
I took three wounds when they did the managed to get into my flank
Shadowcat hit the flank of the Archers again, as they had retreated out
The Hag allowed them to retreat out again...
But I managed a charge into the Peasants, with Raid Leader and Spearwives. Overwhelming assault was used but I could only kill three due to being weakened...
The Peasants attacked my giant and managed to cause a wound!!!
My Giant attacked them back, killing one. And they passed the panic!!!
Before playing Lash Out, toppling the giant. Man, that's pure embarrassing!!!
But at least the centre was contested so Connor didn't score any objectives.
BOARD END OF ROUND 4
END OF ROUND 4
BROTHERHOOD 9 VP's (5 units, 4 objectives)
FREEFOLK 4 VP's (2 units, 2 objectives)
ROUND 5
I played Predictable Maneuvers and as a result, Connor took the Horses with Thoros to move his Archers over to my right.
I then activated Shadowcat, charging into the rear of the last two Peasants, with 3 attacks hitting on a 3+ due to the disrupt. Sadly, I rolled a 1 on the way in.
And my dice were simply woeful!!!
The Hag took the Swords and the archers shot into my objective holding Raiders on the right, wiping them out. But I had Endless Horde on them.
Meanwhile, seven attacks from the Spearwives on 4+.
ONE HIT, ONE WOUND and the Peasants passed their panic...
My right side Raiders were set to make a beeline for the right objective
But Connor was just being efficient, blocking me. So I charged the Knights and dropped one...
END OF ROUND 5 (& GAME)
BROTHERHOOD 10 VP's (6 units, 4 objectives)
FREEFOLK 4 VP's (2 units, 2 objectives)
That was another cracking game, and my dice were poor again. But I also forgot basics of Brotherhood which I've been playing since Christmas. Connor's card play and movement were excellent, as was his target prioritisation. Varamyr was an easier kill, but Mance was a juicier target for the Riders of Highgarden. The Sworn Knights on the right took to much of my effort to get rid off, and my overall focus suffered. Connor played really well and deserved the crushing victory.

Johnny is a regular around UK scene with his beautiful Boltons
and the times we've played he's always been rather unlucky against me.
Given where we were both playing, neither of us were being lucky but at least
John was going to win Best in Faction...
RANDOM TERRAIN & DEPLOYMENT
TERRAIN: Wall, Hedge, Stakes, Wall
BOLTONS: Spearmen, Cutthroats with Dreadfort Archers behind, Spearmen,
Bolton Bastard Girls
FREEFOLK: Boar, Borroq Raiders, Mance Spearwives, Ginat Spear Thrower,
Varamyr, Raiders with Raid Leader
(Shadowcat & Spearwives outflanking)
ROUND 1
I opted to go first and took the Letters to weaken the Dreadfort Archers, Johnny took the Bags to remove the weakened. I then took the Swords but missed shooting with the Giant spear Thrower, before losing two Raiders to a crown zap
Almost perfect for Round 2, with Predicable maneuvers, Diversion tactics and two Regroup and Reforms...
The Spear Thrower managed to kill a left side Spearman, with a second lost to a failed panic
The Boltons had moved up on my left, I still had Varamyr to activate but I had moved up ready to pounce on the left Spearwives when I came on with my Spearwives there...
BOARD END OF ROUND 1
The Dreadfort Archers moved right up but were still out of range, Varamyr was in position to kill the stakes but with enough room to pivot. But the Bastard Girls moving off the Horses and then marching up on my right made me rethink my reinforcements.
TACTICS BOARD AT END OF ROUND 1
ROUND 2
I brought the Spearwives on behind the Bastard Girls on the right and Shadowcat behind the Spearmen on my left
I played Predictable Maneuvers, targeting Walda and the Bastard Girls. So Johnny took the Swords and swapped to panic check...
I lost two Spearwives to it, but then activated shifted into the rear and threw spears...
(John used Karstarks instead of dogs as he forgot to pack them)
All four found the back of a Bolton...
But Johnny's dice were more impressive, losing only one man/dog...
But they failed the panic check for three wounds and were then cut down to three by the charge home...
And lost two more to that panic...
John played Cruel Methods to heal up two but I charged in with the Raid Leaders Raiders, easily wiping them out, surging back to the near right objective.
Shadowcat charged into the rear of the Spearmen, killing two
The Spearmen activated and attacked back, needing 5+ and scored five hits!
Shadowcat died but I played Diversion tactics on Mance to move up.
After moving up and throwing spear, I charged home, using Counter-Strategy to deny Set for Charge. The spearmen dropped to two men. I then had Borroqs unit take the left, and the Boar charge into the flank and finished them off, taking the left objective with the surge forth
TACTICS BOARD END OF ROUND 2
Ramsays Spearmen took the centre, as Varamyr left the stakes and skirted around their flank
BOARD END OF ROUND 2
FREEFOLK 6 VP's (2 units, 4 objectives)
HOUSE BOLTON 1 VP (1 objective)
ROUND 3
I had Val take the Swords and had the Giant throw a spear at the Spearmen
I hit, killing one and they lost another to a failed panic
Johnny had the Cutthroats charged Mance and his Spearwives, killing five.
But I picked up Regroup and Reform, bringing in reinforcements from Borroq's raiders...
I had activated Borroqs unit, sitting on the objective but charging the Boar into the Dreadfort Archers. They retreated out using the Horses, so Mance's Spearwives attacked the Cutthroats, dropping them to five...
The Dreadfort Archers shot into the Spearwives, dropping them to a single rank and also killing a Cutthroat. But I played the second regroup and reform
Ramsay turned to face Varamyr on his flank, but Varamyr circled around the back. I used Craster to heal two on Mance's Spearwives
BOARD END OF ROUND 3
END OF ROUND 3
FREEFOLK 9 VP's (2 units, 7 objectives)
HOUSE BOLTON 2 VP's (2 units)
ROUND 4
Start of Round I played Predictable Maneuvers to deny the Archers or Roose
Johnny cancelled it with A Flayed Man has No Secrets
But on activating Roose, I played Wildling Diplomacy and Johnny said play it.
I killed two Cutthroats
Roose on the Swords saw the Archers shoot Mance's Spearwives, but from five hits I managed to save three. Unfortunately, the Cutthroats died from the panic check
Varamyr charged into the rear of the Archers but with the weakened, totally missed
Mance and the Spearwives pitched spears then charged the Archers too. This allowed Borroq to march onto the far objective and the Giant to take the near side
END OF ROUND 4 (& GAME)
FREEFOLK 14 VP's (3 units, 11 objectives)
HOUSE BOLTON 2 VP's (2 units)
Johnny had no luck in this game, and I had all the right cards and counters to his plans. I frustrated his every move, and everything went right for me, for really the first time this weekend. The Jarl's Spearwives hit and did what the were supposed to and the cards simply fell right, in the best game mode for Freefolk. Ambushing the Bastard Girls like that really had John on the back foot from start of Turn 2
MEANWHILE, ON TABLE 1
GAME 6
Psycho_Ste v Masarath
Tough game, but Mickey ran out the winner...
A great event as always at Wales, I really enjoyed all the games, despite some abysmal dice and luck but I was also simply outplayed in all the games I lost. The social side was awesome, and tickets are already up for next year. A fun, friendly event, an I'd recommend signing up for next year (I already have)

SPECIAL MENTION
I hear a lot of talk about the state of the game, lack of support, community dying out etc.
This is Thomas's 7th event, and it speaks volumes that he had enough interest over two months in advance that his one day, 3 game event sold out by request for a reserve that he hasn't needed to put tickets on sale.
