House Bolton v House Baratheon: A Dance with Dragons

The Wardens of the North West league Game 3 saw Raymond pitch up at mine rather than our usual venue at Justplay. The full League blog by Aden can be found here Wardens

The winner of the game would move to the top of the league, and with my win over Ray at the weekend Justplay tournament, this was going to be a proper hard match up. We were playing A Dance with Dragons.

My randomly selected list for the match up was as follows:

Bolton Cutthroats

Bolton Cutthroats

Bolton Cutthroats with Roose Bolton (C)

Bolton Blackguard with Ramsey Snow

Bolton Flayed Men

NCU's: Petyr Baelish & Lord Varys

Plenty of panic inducement for A Dance with Dragons, so not the worst list

The Sadist brings up the rear of teh Bolton column with his Blackguard

Plenty of Bolton Cutthroats on display...

Raymond's force of Rnely Baratheons was pretty nasty in terms of healing and low morale

Stormcrow Archers with Bronn

Champions of the Stag with Glory Seeker

Baratheons Wardens

Rose Knights with Renly: Lord Paramount (C)

NCU's: Courtney Penrose, Walder Frey & Margery Tyrell

Terrain had corpse pile left, Weirwood tree, wall and anotehr corpse pile. Set up left to right:

Baratheons: Wardens, Stormcrows, Champions of the Stag, Rose Knights

Bolton: Flayed Men, Cutthroats, Blackguard, Roose Cutthroats, Cutthroats

And Raymond is a pretty poor Fonzy impersonator...

TURN 1

Raymond went first and took the horses to advance the Rose knights. I took the crown after taking the  letters. (Raymond had activated his Rose knights between)

The Wardens passed their morale...

END of TURN 1

With first activation next turn, I had the Flayed Men right in the wardens face as he had blocked a charge agains the Stormcrows. In the centre, I felt I'd struggle to get the objective back from Renly so Roose had led his Cutthroats right. (In hindsight, I deployed poorly)

End of Turn 1 tactics board

TURN 2

No mucking about. In went the Flayed Men...

They scored five hits...And the Wardens saved them all, bouncing back two hits with their counterstrike!!!

Hmmm... So he rolls five 3+'s and I couldnt roll a single one!!!

Not the devastating charge I had envisaged. And then the Stromcrow archers activated off the swords

I failed 3 armou saves...

And a further 3 wounds were taken in panic...

Having devastated my cavalry, I tried to do the same by charging into the Champions of the Stag

I managed to score 6 hits...

But only caused one wound, with Raymond passing his panic check. Renly charged in, and hit hard

But at least my morale held. However, Renly retreated away after exposing his flank, usign an NCU on the horses. I spent a Varys token to shift 3" forward with the blackguard

This allowed the Blackguard to get stuck in, as my left flank was crumbling...

All six attacks managed to hit

And scored 4 wounds, further exacerbated by Renly failing his panic check. Add in intimidating Presence, and that was pretty impressive!!!

Meanwhile, the Champions of the Stag finished off the Cutthroats

I didnt roll well but didn expect to ... The Champions repositioned for next turn.

I could have advanced Roose onto the objective for 2 VP's, but felt I had to take risks and so used his actviation to issue commands, but without re-rolls didnt manage to repeat my earlier success, killing two (but one came back as Renly passed his morale).

The Champions of the Stag activated and hit the Blackguard in the rear, killing 7 of the Bolton stalwarts

Not great...

Activating off the swords, lashe dout at Renly, but didnt do anything. Renly struck back, but sadly failed the "horrific visage " panic check...

With intimidating presence, Renly lost all four rose knights, barely hanging on himself. And I was bale to use "Fear keeps a Man alive" to heal 4 blackguards!!!

Using Courtnay to keep Varys off the bags, old man Walder activated last, taking the letter but using the swords to attack again with the Champions of the Stag

Not the best place to get attacked with sundering

And critical blow!!!

Needing to roll sixes, i didnt come close to surviving....

And Renly got healed by the Glory Seeker too..

END OF TURN 2

HOUSE BARATHEON                   5 VP's (2 objectives, 3 units)

HOUSE BOLTON                                                                0 VP's

TURN 3

Using Margery to take the swords, the Stromcrows shot and wiped out the Flayed men

Should be a pile of dead, heavily armoured cavalry there!!!

I tried and failed to charge the weakened Renly Rose Knights with my second vanilla Cutthroats, but they failed. Courtnay took the bags to allow Bronn's stormcrows to fire again, this time at the Cutthroats who had failed their charge

As per below, with bags and swords the Stormcrows cut the cutthroats to bits...

Before the Champions charged in

Scoring 5 wounds, I surprisingly managed to pass my panic check

Finally, some sixes to save 1 man...

Activating last again due to Courtnay keeping Varys off zones, Walder took letters but used swords

Allowing the Stormcrows who had moved up to fire for a third time with all 3 bonuses. The last cutthroat died...

I had moved Roose and my last unit up onto the right objective

The board at the end of Turn 3 was rather embarassing

END OF TURN 3

HOUSE BARATHEON                         8 VP's (4 objectives, 4 units)

HOUSE BOLTON                                   2 VP's (2 from 1 objective_

TURN 4

Using the bags, the Stormcrows activated to shoot into Roose's Cutthroats...

They lost two men, and a further one to the panic dropping the objective. But they collected it as they charged into the Rose Knights...

Decent enough hits...

They succeeded in dropping 3 Rose Knights, but then used horses to retreat and leave Roose to the tender caress of the Stormcrows

A crown double tap didnt finish Renly...

And after Bronn's archer reduced the Cutthroats down...

With some nice shooting...

Renly charged into the flank to finish the job...

But hold on a minute!!!

Not quite, as I was vulnerable... Did get one 6 still, leaving Roose alone to ponder his crimes. Before he ran away!!!

Board at teh end of TURN 4 (and Game)

END OF TURN 4

HOUSE BARATHEON                                     13 VP's   (5 units, 8 objectives)

HOUSE BOLTON                                                               2 VP's (2 objectives)

Well, Raymond now sits on top of the league with me third on dead difference. Nothing I can say, he absolutely battered me, especially with the Stormcrows. I had targeted the Wardens as an easier target than the Rose Knights, but I got that wrong.  Ray's dice were on fire and mine weren't, and i just couldnt capitalise. A thoroughly deserved victory to the Baratheons...
