The Welsh Grand Tournament: Six Battle reports

Greg and I travelled down to Pontypool, just outside of Cardiff in a leafy sunny part of Wales (that's still in the UK for our American cousins). Having had some success with three dragons at Leeds 50pts event, I dropped my Stormcrow's and took them at the 40pt Welsh GT ran by Luke of Dukes Gaming and Keiran "Scaddman" Scaddan.

With 30 players, it was well attended event with a foursome of Essex boys from the Chelmsford Bunker, an ace half dozen contingent of Duke's regulars and a whole horde of the Dead Meta lads from the opposite end of the country (the North East). With a liberal sprnkling of other regulars at UK events, it was simply brilliant....

My list was a very simple build, with the list below for opponents running 3 NCU's

Unsullied Swordmasters with Marselen - Mother's Men Commander ()
Drogon
Viserion
Rhaegal

NCU's

Illyrio Mopatis, Daenerys Targaryen (Unburnt) & Pyat Pree

Against 2 NCU's, I'd swap Pyat Pree out for Walder Frey

The venue at the Ebenezer Centre in Pontypool

GAME 1

Paul "paulus69" M

LANNISTERS

DANCE OF DRAGONS

Lannister Crossbowmen with Kevan Lannister - Protector of the Realm (C) Lannister Guardsmen with Assault Veteran Lannister Halberdiers Lannister Guardsmen with Qyburn - Forbidden Knowledge • Knights of Casterly Rock NCU's Tyrion Lannister and Pycelle
Paul was relatively new to A Song of Ice and Fire so we spent a good few minutes going over my list and what it could do and how it worked. (after the initial language barrier of Paul speaking Welsh to me as he thought I was talking in Welsh when in reality I was speaking English with a slight Scottish twang).   As icebreakers go, its a classic.

Paul was also a gentleman and suggested he take a picture of me, so here I am...

SET UP & TERRAIN (RANDOMLY GENERATED)

Wall, hedge, hedge, Weirwood and Stakes

LANNISTERS: Guards with Assault vet, Crossbows with Kevan, Halberdiers, Knights of Casterly Rock, Guards with Qyburn

Targaryens: Drogon, Unsullied Swords with Marselen, Viserion, Rhaegal

TURN 1

I chose to go first and placed Daenerys on the swords.

This allowed me to play Devotees of the Dragon and spawn a unit of Freedmen

Paul took the horses and moved up the Crossbows while I took the Letters and weakened the Knights

I moved up the Freedmen up as Paul marched his Guard on my right and Halberdiers down the middle.

I then swung heavy left to avoid the Knights and concentrate on the crossbows and Guards there, hoping the Swordmasters could hold the centre.

Tyrion had taken the bags and removed the weakened and turn finished with Walder taking crown but Intrigue and Subterfuge stopped me taking the first turn. I panicked the crossbows but they passed easily enough.

BOARD END OF TURN 1

TURN 2

Paul took letters and weakened Drogon before Viserion swooped into the Crossbows flank.

Paul took the Horses to have his Guardsmen turn in behind Viserion, but Drogon countered with a rear charge

Sadly for me, Paul used the weakened and I rolled the dreaded double one...

The Crossbowmen turned to face and fought with Viserion

and the Swordmasters were charged by the Halberdiers, dropping 3 of my elites...

thanks to better than average armour saves. The Swordmasters attack back was devastating, with Walder allowing a second attack to finish the Halberdiers off

TURN 3

I didn't take the Swords, as the left side units were weak...

And instead charged the Knights of Casterly Rock, who had ran over the Freedmen (who had supplied aid to heal my Swordmasters). With Precision and use of War Cry, the Lannister Knights dropped a whole rank

And I passed the Lannister Supremacy quite well

Rhaegal flanked the Crossbows, leaving Kevan and a lone Lannister alive

And with the -1 from Lannister supremacy, I rolled snake eyes to take 3 wounds from a failed panic check...

I had Daenerys take the bags but used Dracarys

to have Rhaegal finish of the Crossbows

Drogon only managed two wounds on the Guards...

But with a failed panic check, the unit was destroyed and Drogon took the left flank objective...

Viserion flew in and flanked the Cavalry, rolling well enough to finish of the Lannister knights...

Tactics Board End of Turn 3

BOARD AT END OF TURN 3

TURN 4

I took the horses as Viserion and Rhaegal went for the kill, but Rhaegal failed his charged. However, Viserion maxxed his wounds as did Paul on his failed panic

Daenerys took the bags but used Dracarys to finish of the Guardsmen

END OF TURN 4 (and Game)

HOUSE TARGARYEN 11 VP's

HOUSE LANNISTER 2 VP's

A hard first tournament match for Paul, as my maneuverability, auto wounding and excellent morale meant I picked my fights and avoided the Knights with the Dragons. The Swordmasters striking down the halberdiers end of turn 2 allowed them to get the drop on the knights turn 3. Pleased to say Paul managed a few wins over the weekend.

GT CYMRU BINGO

A novel wee side game for the event was the Bingo. And I'd scored rather well after game 1, as I'd been drawn on bottom table, rolled snake eyes (with picture proof above!!!), etc, etc...

PAINTING

Over a Domino's pizza lunch, we got to see the painting but this was put to a public vote on Facebook.

GAME 2

ADAM "HARBO1993" HARBINSON

LANNISTERS

HONED AND READY

Lannister Halberdiers with Addam Marbrand - Commander of City Watch (C)
Lannister Crossbowmen
Knights of Casterly Rock
Lannister Halberdiers
Gregor Clegane - The Mountain That Rides

NCU's

Pycelle, Petyr Baelish & Tommen Baratheon

One of the regular DMG lads that attend many tournaments, I've faced Adam a few times now, most recently up at the Northern GT when his Martells annihilated me. So I knew I'd have to be at my best as I've not beaten him before. Fortunately, my Dragons had done well against Lannisters of late so I was definitely up for this game.

Terrain: Bog, Weirwood and Bog

LANNISTERS: The Mountain, Halberdiers, Crossbows, Marbrand's Halberdiers, Knights of Casterly Rock

TARGARYENS: Drogon, Rhaegal, Marselen's Unsullied, Viserion

I was running Pyat Pree over Walder and figured i'd try and bear left, avoiding the knights again until I had a numerical advantage...

TURN 1

I went first and had Pyat take the Letters, weakening the Knights and Adam took bags to remove it. (Almost Deja vu). I then had Daenerys take the swords...

And played "Devotees of the Dragon" again to bolster my activations

I also got both Blood of the Dragons out

Board at End of Turn 1

Adam had his Halberdiers set, but had left a road into his crossbows and invited my Swordmasters to go for the Knights...

Tactics Board at End of Turn 1

TURN 2

Adam took the bags with Baelish and used swords and had the crossbows kill a few of my Swordmasters. I decided I wouldn't fall for the obvious trap of attacking the Crossbows and laid out a 4+ charge on the Mountain

I made the charge on a six!!!

Although I only caused three wounds, the Vicious panic attack meant the Big Guy fell to the Bigger Guy!!!

Leaving the Lannister lines with a big Lizard in their rear...

Adam then shot with the crossbows, killing another two Swordmasters before they failed their 3+ panic check. I used Supply Aid to heal up four Swordsmasters before Pyat took the Letters. Taking the Horses, Adam brought the Knights of Casterly Rock around as Drogon had already activated

I wasnt expecting Adam to do that with his Knights as it exposed his rear to a long charge...

And with Devastating impact for re-rolls on the charge with Marselen, I was always gonna go for that 5+...

All eight attacks hit (two with Precision) and with a vulnerable token...

Yeah, it made a mess and Adam even rolled a 3 for wounds on his failed panic check

I failed a long range charge badly with the Freedmen who died to the failed panic. Which gave tokens for Blood of the Dragon. (Every Cloud...)

But Viserion made it in and finished the Knights off...

Before using Overrun to fly into the flank of the Crossbowmen and Devastating impact for Panic token

I wasn't happy rolling another pair of ones on the charge, but at least I had re-rolls...

Well the dice were slightly more kind for this attack and I dropped seven crossbowmen

Daenerys took teh House of Undying and used Dracarys

Or would have but for Intrigue and Subterfuge...

BOARD END OF TURN 2

Rhaegal had taken the near left objective, while Halberdiers had taken the far left and centre...

HOUSE TARGARYEN 3 VP's (2 units, 1 objective)

HOUSE LANNISTER 2 VP's (2 objectives)

TURN 3

Pyat took the Swords and had Viserion attack the Crossbows, with both attack dice hitting

Weakened token expended, Viserion fluffs again. Hmm...

Well, Drogon swooped in to the rear and showed him how to do it!!!

Having turned around to face my Swordmasters, the Halberdiers were charged by Rhaegal. Rhaegal just missed out on his charge to their rear but the Swordmasters still went in the front using Unstoppable Advance to ignore the bog...

All nine attacks hit home first time out...

But Adam managed an impressive seven saves...

Still, Viserion then joined the Unsullied, trying to atone for his earlier sins...

And I fluffed it... Well, yeah, I fluffed it in my head having needed 3+ for the Swordmasters!!!

So I re-rolled them both for some unbeknown reason!!! And to quote a wise old Ent,

"There is no curse in Elvish, Entish, or the tongues of Men for this treachery."

Well, I suppose its fortunate that my sheer stupidity wasn't at a crucial juncture of the game. Its fair to say, Adam had a good laugh at my expense, more so as I was playing against him at Always Winter (Scottish GT 2022) when I had my last major brain fart running Greyjoys against his Starks!!!

------------------------FLASHBACK---------------------

(The Turn of Eternal Shame!!!)

So, Nute and the Reavers on the far left are facing Stormcrow archers near objective. I declared charge with Rush of Aggression, getting in and crumping some archers, electing to go 50/50 rather than full on as possible flank from Blackguard would have been tempting. Adam retreated the stormcrows away. And I declared a charge through the spikes at them... To which Adam pointed out that it was a palisade... My palisade. I rolled it, I placed it, it was my terrain piece. Add in no impassable terrain was even ALLOWED in this scenario Basic error and sheer stupidity on my part. I had it in my head it was the spikes!!!Adam allowed me to rethink but I simply activated to attack and destroy the palisade!!! Leaving Nute and his Reavers horribly exposed. Still, I took the centre objective.

-------------------------------Back to our time------------------------------

When Adam had picked himself off the floor at my stupidity, I did get a successful Dracarys attack which left Adam Marbrand alone in the unit...

END OF TURN 3

HOUSE TARGARYEN 4 VP's (3 units, 1 objective)

HOUSE LANNISTER 3 VP's (3 objectives)

TURN 4

I took the swords and had Viserion eat Adam Marbrand. I then simply out activated the Lannisters before swooping in for the kill, wiping out the last of the Lannister troops...

END OF TURN 4 (and Game)

HOUSE TARGARYEN 6 VP's (5 units, 1 objective)

HOUSE LANNISTER 3 VP's (3 objectives)

Adam was unlucky in that I took out his biggest threats early, and effectively mirrored the first game. Sure, I had some really bad dice (and errors) but they were academic in the grand scheme of things. The 5+ charge into the Knights was a cruel stroke on Adam, but I have to admit it was good to finally beat him...

GAME 3

FIRE AND BLOOD

ON A MAGNIFICENT TOP TABLE

LEE "SQUIG" PARKIN

BARATHEONS

Like his Stats name suggests, Lee is wee mad bouncy ball of fun (without the big teef) and such a great guy to play against, another Dead Meta Gaming stalwart and regular on the UK tourney scene. He doesn't take the game too seriously (like most of the DMG guys, and that is a mark of respect, not an intended slight) and we always have a blast. This game didn't disappoint either...

He had been running an Axell list but changed that out to Loras Tyrell as he had a plan to deal with my Dragons:

Baratheon Wardens with Loras Tyrell - The Knight of Flowers (C)
Baratheon Wardens
Highgarden Pikemen
Thorn Watch
Riders of Highgarden

NCU's
Eldon Estermont, Cortnay Penrose with Olenna Tyrell

Terrain: A couple of stakes and a hedge on the right is really all you'll see...

BARATHEONS: Wardens with Loras, Riders of Highgarden, Pikemen (marked),
Thornwatch, Wardens (marked)

TARGARYENS: Rhaegal, Swordmasters, Viserion (marked) & Drogon (marked)

TURN 1

I took the first turn and played another Devotees of the Dragon, deploying them
to the front.

We played through the tactics board leaving one NCU each, before I committed Drogon to the attack. He rolled maximum wounds, as did Lee on his panic failure. The Wardens attacked back and caused two wounds.

And yes, had it mattered I'd have failed the panic check

Dracarys from Daenerys finished off the Wardens

As Lee re-aligned his forces, and I advanced up the Highgarden Riders failed their charge...

Tactics Board End of Turn 1

HOUSE TARGARYEN 4 VP's

HOUSE BARATHEON 0 VP's

TURN 2

Lee moved the Riders of Highgarden into Drogons flank and charged,  easily killing him with 10 hits, sundering and in the flank.

The Freedmen marched up to act as a buffer for any charge from Loras or the Pikemen. I charged the Highgarden Riders with Viserion.

I caused seven wounds, but final strike and the Thornwatch firing from the swords

Lee tried a 2+ charge with the Pikemen into the Swordmasters. But rolled a one!!!

So I sent my last dragon into them, killing four. Lee brought the Thornwatch up around but they had no shots in range. And Loras and his Wardens spectacularly failed to kill the Freedmen...

END OF TURN 2

HOUSE BARATHEON 6 VP's

HOUSE TARGARYEN 4 VP's

TURN 3

I took the swords and Rhaegal wiped out the remaining pikemen. The Rider charged Rhaegal, doing seven wounds. I healed him up, but Lee used horses to retreat the Riders away. Before the Thornwatch went in on the badly wounded Dragon.

With 4 wounds taken, I needed to make five 5+ saves. Close, but no cigar. All three dragons dead, and all involved the "Dragonslayers", Lee's dastardly Riders of Highgarden!!!

I charged the Wardens with Loras in them with Marselen and his Unsullied, dropping four of them.

When they attacked back, they targetted the Freedmen killing them and healing the Wardens with "Growing Strong"

TURN 4

Lee went with the Dragonslayers into the flank but they didn't roll well and I saved a few on 5+ due to Marselens . Unfaltering Conviction and the 4 tokens he had. I healed off the bags...

Lee then took the swords and Loras assassinated Marselen, meaning I lost all his benefits...

The Swordmasters unleashed their fury on the Dragonslayers

And accumulated all the tokens as a result

HOUSE BARATHEONS 7 VP's

TURN 5

I went first taking the Swords and killing the Riders of Highgarden. I then hoped to hold on and retreat away but Lee had other idea's and activated the Thornwatch who downed four of the Unsullied before the last two died from the panic check...

END OF TURN 5 (& GAME)

HOUSE BARATHEON 8 VP's

HOSUE TARGARYEN 8 VP's

Aaaargh, he did me good there!!! Not allowing me to manouver at will by corner camping, and then taking my Dragons down one at a time, yeah, Lee played a blinder... He went on and tabled his fourth opponent too, so he is no longer Squig. He is SUPER SQUIG!!! Cracking game and the death of Marselen scuppered my plan to sneak a win at the end...

HAVE A BREAK. WE DID AND HAD A GREAT NIGHT OF CURRY AND SOCIALISING UNTIL AFTER MIDNIGHT...

GAME 4

KARL "CUSHTY84" CHRISTY

MARTELLS

A FEAST FOR CROWS

Karl is from the Chelmsford bunker, and we'd chatted a bit the night before at the Indian restaraunt and Wetherspoons. I figured he would run the double flayed Men list, as they are the obvious counter to my mobility. He'd also lost to Squig, so we had a good whinge about that...

Martell Spearmen with Harmen Uller - Lord of Hellholt (C)
Starfall Outriders
House Bolton Flayed Men
House Bolton Flayed Men

NCU's

Tyene Sand, Ellaria Sand and Oberyn Martell

Terrain: Stakes, bog, wall, Weirwood plus 2 corpse piles for scenario

MARTELLS: Outriders, Uller's Spearmen, Flayed Men, Flayed Men

TARGARYENS: Viserion, Drogon, Rhaegal and Marselen's Swordmasters

I had hoped Karl would split his forces but that was me being optimistic. My plan
would really depend on opportunity and try an avoid the Flayed men with the dragons...

TURN 1

We spent the first round manouvering, and I felt the Starfall Outriders were exposed, with the stakes able to cover my flanks, so I threw Drogon and Viserion towards them ready for next turn.

Tactics Board at End of Turn 1

TURN 2

I sent Drogon in first, and did a lot of damage. Unsurprisngly, Karl took the Horses and retreated

Wanting to keep the pressure on, I decided to take the risk and charged Viserion into the spearmen...

And yet again, Viserion was a weak link for me...

Fortunately, again, the reroll just about made it..

I did four six wounds, but Karl passed the panic and then healed from the bags

They also healed when I passed a panic check

The Flayed Men flanked me, taking me up to six wounds and while I still had Illyrio to heal him, I went for a game winning charge. I could have used Rhaegal to engage the unactivated Flayed Men, but opted for a 50/50 4+ charge into the spearmen. Had I passed, I was over running into the Starfall Outriders. Still, the dice failed me and I ended up behind Viserion and badly exposed.

Tactics Board (with poison on the swords) which was taken by Karl

allowing the Spearmen to attack Viserion and kill him...

Before the Spearmen activated and used Cunning Ploy to get the Flayed Men to march around the back of Rhaegal and then charge it in the rear.

Rhaegal died easily, to the minus eight panic check.Yeah, Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken card on Rhaegal gave -2, rear -2, vicious -2, Intimidating presence -1 and corpse pile -1. Nasty!!!

They then got set up to go first in Turn 3

TACTICS BOARD END OF TURN 2

House Martell 3 VP's (2 units, 1 objective)

House Targaryen 1 VP (1 objective)

TURN 3

Karl sent the Flayed Men into Drogon

easily killing the dragon with the failed panic check (only -6 this time). They then turned to go after the Swordmasters

Harmen Uller's speremn stayed put as the cavalry all turned and marched on the Unsullied.

I waited patiently and thought about my rather limited options. This was further limited by Karl palying rising temperatures, which meant I could not heal when battle was joined...

BOARD END OF TURN 4

Martells 6 VP's (3 units, 3 objectives)

Targaryens 3 VP's (3 objectives)

Tactics Board End of Turn 4

TURN 5

Sacrificing Pyat Pree, I took the Swords to play Devotees of the Dragon and bring on a Freedmen speed bump.

As Karl took letters to let me be out activated, I charged the Freedmen into the Flayed Men, to reduce number of attacks going into the Swordmasters. Alas, Karl played set for charge and wiped them out before they even raised their pitchforks...

It was certainly going to be a painful turn for the Unsullied

The Flayed Men went in first on my right flank

I did strike back, but armour saves were good on the Boltons. The second Flayed Men struck

Before the Starfall Outriders sealed me in and forced me to drop the objective, giving it to the Flayed men to the front.

END OF TURN 5

HOUSE MARTELL 8 VP's (3 units, 5 objectives)

HOUSE TARGARYEN 3VP's (3 objectives)

TURN 6

Karl attacked me and I died...

HOUSE MARTELL 11 VP's (4 units, 7 objectives)

HOUSE TARGARYEN 3 VP's (3 objectives)

Board at End of Game

Karl played a masterclass in manouverability and totally outplayed me. The card combinations scuppered me but I still think the game would have been mine had Rhaegal made that charge on the spearmen. The smarter paly may have been to engage the Flayed Men but I got carried away as usual. It wasn't a close game, but it was fun and as I'll be starting on Martells soon, it was a good learning experience. Karl ended up 3rd place after six games.

GAME 5

PHIL "LATERALUS" GIBBONS

BARATHEONS

A CLASH OF KING

Another regular on the UK scene this would be the first time I've played Phil. Having suffered against Olenna previously. I though Phil would have used his other list but he'd been running Eldon, double Champions of Stag and Double Wardens and wanted to see if Stannis could cope with the Dragons...

R'hllor Queen's Men with Stannis Baratheon - The Rightful Heir (C)
R'hllor Lightbringers with Davos Seaworth - Onion Knight
Champions of The Stag with Glory Seeker
Dragonstone Noble

NCU's
Cressen, Patchface and Petyr Baelish

Terrain: Staked, Weirwood, Bog

BARATHEONS: Stannis in Queen's Men, Champions of the Stag, Lightbringers, Dragonstone Noble

TARGARYENS: Unsullied Swordmasters, Rhaegal, Viserion, Drogon.

TURN 1

Not much to see, as we closed up with Drogon getting a boost off of the Horses to sweep up the flank. He'd taken four wounds from the Lightbringers shooting but Illyrio healed him up. The noble was tucked in behind the Lighbringers so i couldnt get him in the front but going first in round two, I could get his flank (just)

TURN 2

As I drew a new card, I got Overrun. Going first, I activated Drogon and flanked the Noble, killing him outright on the attack before playing Over run into the flank of the Lightbringers, who lost half their number.

I did take a pair of tokens from Baratheon Justice...

Taking the swords with Baelish and spending a token to use the Horses, Phil retreated the Lightbringers away.

I then activated Rhaegal to charge into the Champions of the Stags cutting them in half...

They attacked back with a Final Strike, doing three wounds

but I healed Rhaegal up with Pyat Pree on the bags...

Phil took the Horses, turning the Stannis and the Queen's Men to face the flank of Rhaegal. this exposed his flank to a  5+ charge from Marselen and the Unsullied, which I used with Devastating impact.

And I didn't need the re-roll, rolling a three-headed dragon

The Swordmasters killed six Baratheons

As the Stags retreated away on their activation, after being healed I brought Viserion up for back up as Illyrio healed up Rhaegal too

END OF TURN 2

TARGARYENS 1 VP (1 unit)

BARATHEONS 0 VP's

TACTICS BOARD END OF TURN 2

TURN 3

I took the swords and had the Sword Masters attack but Phil then took the bags to heal. I had Illyrio take the Horses and heal up Drogon as he'd taken a wound but I didn't want any Baratheons retreating

Patchface's second guess didn't draw out any cards, nor did his first...

The Champions charged into Rhaegal, expending a token to do D3 auto wounds (2)

I held the charge, and then used supply aid from Viserion to heal up a few wounds on Rhaegal before having Drogon charge in and wipe out Davos and his Lightbringers. Phil countered by turning and attacking the Swordmasters, killing six but I passed the morale check and healed one up

Phil had activated out, and the rest of the turn saw Rhaegal finish off the Champions of the Stag with his activation and Dany's Dracarys attack, before the Swordmasters and a Viserion charge saw Stannis fall...

Tactics Board End of turn 3 (and Game)

TARGARYENS 4 VP's (4 units)

GAME 6

JAMES "SonicAssassin1" STANFORD

TARGARYEN

A GAME OF THRONES

The second of the Chelmsford bunker lads I'd gotten to play, and a fellow Targaryen player so this would decide top Targaryen. Again, we'd had a good chat on the Saturday night so I was looking forward to playing him. He'd unsurprisingly left his list with Jorah behind...

Drogo's Bloodriders with Khal Drogo - The Great Khal (C)
Dothraki Outriders
Dothraki Outriders
House Bolton Flayed Men

Non Combat Units
Illyrio Mopatis, Pyat Pree and Walder Frey

(NB: I opted for my Walder Frey list as Jamie had Pyat Pree and the House of Undying in both list...)

SET UP: Weirwood, wall and Stakes

DROGO: Outriders, Flayed men, Bloodriders, Outriders

MASRSELEN: Viserion, Drogon, Swordmasters, Rhaegal

TURN 1

Jamie put Pyat Pree on the House of Undying, removing a Supply Aid. However, I took the swords

to bring on some Freedmen with Devotees of the Dragon

We both moved up centrally and on my left, with the Dragons forming a nice echelon formation on the left...

With the Freedmen on, and Jamie having went first, iIwas so busy making pretty attack patterns with my Dragons ready to swoop in first activation next turn, that I left the crown free for Jamie to pinch with Walder... What a plonker!!!

Still, Drogon hadn't activated, so I chanced a 4+ charge again. And failed...

I then used Walder to take the horses and bring Rhaegal up to support Drogon (reversing my earlier echelon) with Drogon taking the lead now...

Tactics Board End of Turn 1

TURN 2

Taking the Swords, the outriders on the left shot up Drogon but I rolled well and he only took three wounds before flying into the flank of the Flayed Men

And those three wounds were healed up by Supplying Aid from the Freedmen before hand...

Jamie retreated the Flayed men out using the horses before Rhaegal failed another long range charge going for broke...

Drogon was shot up again by the Outridersin the rear, so I healed with Illyrio. Rhaegal fell to Drogo's Bloodriders flanking him and then playing Overrun...

ploughing into the already wounded Drogon...

and my dice were not gonna help...

Two dragons down, and Viserion left. Hardly my most reliable Dragon this weekend!!!

Still, I sent Viserion into the Outriders doing four wounds.

Then Daenerys took the Crown and used Dracarys on them...

Well, I suppose that was always gonna happen. Jamie had the deceny to say he felt for me, but its a game of dice and when they roll well, they roll well...

Jamie redeployed around as he had the numbers now. Walder Frey used the swords and Viserion dropped the Outriders down to a rank.

END OF TURN 2

DROGO 2 VP's (2 dragons)

MARSELEN 1 VP (1 objective)

TURN 3

I had Illyrio take the swords and wipe out the Outriders, bringing Viserion about to face the Bloodriders

Jamie had Pyat Pree heal up the Flayed Men

I took the Horses and moved Marselen off of the centre, into the centre of Jamie's crescent of cavalry. Sure he thought I was just binning off the game, but I had a cunning plan. After being shot in the flank by the Outriders, the Flayed Men charged in and nearly did for me. But not quite!!! I then played Sudden retreat...

Before Marselen on his own charged the Flayed Men

I'd used Devastating impact too

And dropped the Flayed Men to a single wound...

Walder used the Swords and Marselen finished the Boltons off

Alas, Jamie used his Walder to take the swords

allowing his right side Outriders to shoot Marselen down like a dirty dog....

This also left the Freedmen with no support so they did a runner...

I had flanked the Bloodriders but they'd healed with Illyrio and savaged me back...

END OF TURN 3

DROGO 3 VP's (3 units)

MARSELEN 3 VP's (2 units, 1 objective)

TURN 4

With two wounds left, Jamie took the swords with Pyat Pree and rolled his eight dice... And scored two hits!!!

I passed one save, and had to re-roll. But passed that too!!! I also passed the panic (well, I couldn't fail)

I then played sudden retreat and flew well away, before activating and flying out of reach...

Jamie closed in as I edged toward the centre after healing 3 wounds with Illyrio. He shifted onto the centre with field control and I used Walder to use Horses and move away from Drogo and the Outriders arc...

END OF TURN 4

DROGO 4 VP's (3 units, 1 objective)

MARSELEN 3 VP's (2 units, 1 objective)

Tactics Board End of Turn 4

TURN 5

I took the Horses first activation and flew away. the Outriders were still in range to move and shoot and did so, having turned to face off their own Walder move last turn. I then activated and flew further away, out of range of the outriders and placed mid way between the right objectives. Drogo and his Bloodriders marched right up, before activating off of Assault orders and charging in over the stakes...

I'd asked about it earlier, but forgotten about it and there was nothing I could have done to prevent it

Viserion died and Jamie and Drogo took the field!!!

END OF TURN 5 (and Game)

DROGO TARGARYEN 5 VP's (4 units, 1 objective)

MARSELEN TARGARYEN 3 VP's (2 units, 1 objective)

Again, cavalry were the bane of my dragons. Drogo with Overrun dropping two dragons in turn 2 meant I was on the back foot, but I stayed in the fight as best I could. Marselen baiting the Flayed Men was nice, but came too late to help. Viserion on his own could not defeat the mighty Drogo and Jamie deservedly took the victory and top Targaryen award. Another great game, but again, I played too aggressively and suffered from bad 50/50's...

And so I ended up with three crushing wins and three crushing defeats, placing 14th of 30. Win big or lose big seems to be the way of the Dragon. A great event, really sociable and got to play against four new players (with a pair of old DMG foes too). Can't praise Luke and Kieran enough for how smooth the event went, how fun and friendly the atmosphere was. I also managed to win the Bingo prize, due to my high score in game 1.

A few random pics of the event from Luke & Kieran (these two)

Steve "Darkman" Butler beating up James Kira while Luke Vicars ponders his next move

"SUPER SQUIG"

Greg won Best Boyo (Most Sporting) and got a replica of "ICE"

Obviously by pimping himself for the weekend.......

A great showing from the DEA META GUYS, finishing 1st (bit dubious that) 2nd, 5th and 6th. Not sure hiring Carlo for the weekend counts though. Jamie and Karl's 3rd and 4th was good to see too, they both were great to play against...
